In order to highlight the onset of chaos in the Pullen-Edmonds model a quantal analog of the resonance overlap criterion has been examined. A quite good agreement between analytical and numerical results is obtained.
To show the existence of precursor phenomena of the transition order$\ to$chaos in atomic nuclei a simple analysis has been made, based on a recent criterion proposed by Pavli\-chenkov. The basic idea is that nonlinear effects in rotational bands should lead to bifurcation, which qualitatively changes the spectrum for one of the nuclear excitation branches. Experimental data concerning the isotopes of Er, Hf, Yb, Os, Dy, W strongly support the above criterion.
A test on the numerical accuracy of the semiclassical approximation as a function of the principal quantum number has been performed for the Pullen--Edmonds model, a two--dimensional, non--integrable, scaling invariant perturbation of the resonant harmonic oscillator. A perturbative interpretation is obtained of the recently observed phenomenon of the accuracy decrease on the approximation of individual energy levels at the increase of the principal quantum number. Moreover, the accuracy provided by the semiclassical approximation formula is on the average the same as that provided by quantum perturbation theory.
The transition from order to chaos in atomic nuclei has been studied analytically and numerically using a quadrupole--quadrupole residual interaction. This interaction leads to chaotic behaviour, but the critical energy $E_C\simeq 12.6$ MeV, corresponding to the onset of chaos, is higher than that of the experimental one.
An interesting aspect of nuclear dynamics is the co--existence, in atomic nuclei, of regular and chaotic states. In the first part of the present work, we review the state of the art of nuclear dynamics and use a schematic shell model to show how a very simple and schematic nucleon--nucleon interaction can produce an order$\to$chaos transition. The second part is devoted to a discussion of the wave function behaviour and decay of chaotic states using some simple models (to be published in Rivista Nuovo Cimento).
We consider a slab of nuclear matter and investigate the collective excitations, which develop in the response function of the system. We introduce a finite-range realistic interaction among the nucleons, which reproduces the full G-matrix by a linear combination of gaussian potentials in the various spin-isospin channels. We then analyze the collective modes of the slab in the S=T=1 channel: for moderate momenta hard and soft zero-sound modes are found, which exhaust most of the excitation strength. At variance with the results obtained with a zero range force, new "massive" excitations are found for the vector-isovector channel .
