Spin wave interactions in the pyrochlore Heisenberg antiferromagnet with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions

We study the effect of magnon interactions on the spin wave spectra of the all-in-all-out phase of the pyrochlore nearest neighbour antiferromagnet with a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction ($D$). The leading order corrections to spin wave energies indicate a significant renormalisation for commonly encountered strengths of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya term. For low values of $D$ we find a potential instability of the phase itself, indicated by the renormalisation of magnon frequencies to negative values. We have also studied the renormalized spectra in the presence of magnetic fields along three high symmetry directions of the lattice, namely the $[111]$, $[100]$ and $[110]$ directions. Generically, we find that for a fixed value of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction renormalized spectra for the lowest band decrease with an increasing strength of the field. We have also analyzed the limits of the two magnon continuum and probed the possibility of magnon decay. For a range of $D$ and the field strength we identify possible parameter regimes where the decay of the higher bands of the system are kinematically allowed.

Universal properties of single particle excitations across the many-body localization transition

Understanding the nature of the transition from the delocalized to the many-body localized (MBL) phase is an important unresolved issue. To probe the nature of the MBL transition, we investigate the universal properties of single-particle excitations produced in highly excited many-body eigenstates of a disordered interacting quantum many-body system. In a class of one-dimensional spinless fermionic models with random disorder, we study the finite size scaling of the ratio of typical to average values of the single-particle local density of states and the scattering rates across the MBL transition. Our results indicate that the MBL transition in this class of one-dimensional models of spinless fermions is continuous in nature. For various ranges of interactions in the system, the critical exponent $ν$ with which the correlation length $ξ$ diverges at the transition point $W_c$, $ξ\sim |W-W_c|^{-ν}$, satisfies the Chayes-Chayes-Fisher-Spencer(CCFS) bound $ν\ge 2/d$ where $d$ is the physical dimension of the system. We also discuss why the critical exponent obtained from finite-size scaling of the conventional diagnostic of many-body localization, the level-spacing ratio, strongly violates the CCFS bound while the single-particle density of states and scattering rates are consistent with the CCFS criterion.

Magnon bands in pyrochlore slabs with Heisenberg exchange and anisotropies

The pyrochlore lattice is a versatile venue to probe the properties of magnetically ordered states induced or perturbed by anisotropic terms like the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions or single-ion anisotropy. Several such ordered states have been investigated recently as precursors of topological magnons and the associated surface states. In parallel, there has been recent progress in growing thin films of magnetic materials with this lattice structure along high symmetry directions of the lattice. In both cases, an account of the magnetic excitations of relevant Hamiltonians for finite slabs is a necessary step in the analysis of the physics of these systems. We study here magnon bands in the slab geometry for a class of spin models on the pyrochlore lattice with Heisenberg exchange, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and spin-ice anisotropy. For a range of model parameters, for both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange, we compute the classical ground states for different slab orientations and determine the spin wave excitations above them. We analyze the ferromagnetic splay phase, the all-in-all-out phase and a coplanar phase and evaluate magnon dispersions for slabs oriented perpendicular to the $[111]$, $[100]$ and $[110]$ directions. For all the phases considered, depending on the slab orientation, magnon band structures can be non-reciprocal and we highlight the differences in the three orientations from this point-of-view. Finally, we present details of the surface localized magnons for all the three slab orientations in the phases we study. For the ferromagnetic splay phase and the all-in-all-out phase we analyze surface states associated with point degeneracies or nodal lines in the bulk spectrum by computing the magnonic Berry curvature and Weyl charges or Chern numbers associated with it.

Local density of states and scattering rates across the many-body localization transition

Characterizing the many-body localization (MBL) transition in strongly disordered and interacting quantum systems is an important issue in the field of condensed matter physics. We study the single particle Green's functions for a disordered interacting system in one dimension using exact diagnonalization in the infinite temperature limit and provide strong evidence that single particle excitations carry signatures of delocalization to MBL transition. In the delocalized phase, the typical values of the local density of states and the scattering rate are finite while in the MBL phase, the typical values for both the quantities become vanishingly small. The probability distribution functions of the local density of states and the scattering rate are broad log-normal distributions in the delocalized phase while the distributions become very narrow and sharply peaked close to zero in the MBL phase. We also study the eigenstate Green's function for all the many-body eigenstates and demonstrate that both, the energy resolved typical scattering rate and the typical local density of states, can track the many-body mobility edges.

The spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the pyrochlore lattice: An exact diagonalisation study

We present exact diagonalisation calculations for the spin-1/2 nearest neighbour antiferromagnet on the pyrochlore lattice. We study a section of the lattice in the $[111]$ direction and analyse the Hamiltonian of the breathing pyrochlore system with two coupling constants $J_1$ and $J_2$ for tetrahedra of different orientations and investigate the evolution of the system from the limit of disconnected tetrahedra ($J_2 = 0$) to a correlated state at $J_1=J_2$. We evaluate the low energy spectrum, two and four spin correlations, and spin chirality correlations for a system size of up to 36 sites. The model shows a fast decay of spin correlations and we confirm the presence of several singlet excitations below the lowest magnetic excitation. We find chirality correlations near $J_1=J_2$ to be small at the length scales available at this system size. Evaluation of dimer-dimer correlations and analysis of the nature of the entanglement of the tetrahedral unit shows that the triplet sector of the tetrahedron contributes significantly to the ground state entanglement at $J_1 = J_2$.

Classical dipoles on the kagome lattice

Motivated by recent developments in magnetic materials, frustrated nanoarrays and cold atomic systems, we investigate the behaviour of dipolar spins on the frustrated two-dimensional kagome lattice. By combining the Luttinger-Tisza approach, numerical energy minimization, spin-wave analysis and parallel tempering Monte-Carlo, we study long-range ordering and finite-temperature phase transitions for a Hamiltonian containing both dipolar and nearest-neighbor interactions. For both weak and moderate dipolar interactions, the system enters a three-sublattice long-range ordered state, with each triangle having vanishing dipole and quadrupole moments; while for dominating dipolar interactions we uncover ferrimagnetic three-sublattice order. These are also the ground states for XY spins. We discuss excitations of, as well as phase transitions into, these states. We find behaviour consistent with Ising criticality for the 120-degree state, while the ferrimagnetic state appears to be associated with drifting exponents. The celebrated flat band of zero-energy excitations of the kagome nearest-neighbour Heisenberg model is lifted to finite energies but acquires only minimal dispersion as dipolar interactions are added.

Dynamic Spin Fluctuations at $T\rightarrow 0$ in a Spin-1/2 Ferromagnetic Kagome Lattice

We report magnetization, electron spin resonance (ESR), and muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements on single crystals of the $S=1/2$ (Cu$% ^{+2}$) kagomé compound Cu(1,3-benzendicarboxylate). The $μ$SR is carried to temperatures as low as 45 mK. The spin Hamiltonian parameters are determined from the analysis of the magnetization and ESR data. We find that this compound has anisotropic ferromagnetic interactions. Nevertheless, no spin freezing is observed even at temperatures two orders of magnitude lower than the coupling constants. In light of this finding, the relation between persistent spin dynamics and spin liquid are reexamined.

p6 - Chiral Resonating Valence Bonds in the Kagome Antiferromagnet

The Kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet is mapped onto an effective Hamiltonian on the star superlattice by Contractor Renormalization. Comparison of ground state energies on large lattices to Density Matrix Renormalization Group justifies truncation of effective interactions at range 3. Within our accuracy, magnetic and translational symmetries are not broken (i.e. a spin liquid ground state). However, we discover doublet spectral degeneracies which signal the onset of p6 - chirality symmetry breaking. This is understood by simple mean field analysis. Experimentally, the p6 chiral order parameter should split the optical phonons degeneracy near the zone center. Addition of weak next to nearest neighbor coupling is discussed.

Entanglement signatures for the dimerization transition in the Majumdar-Ghosh model

The transition from a gapless liquid to a gapped dimerized ground state that occurs in the frustrated antiferromagnetic Majumdar-Ghosh (or $J_1-J_2$ Heisenberg) model is revisited from the point of view of entanglement. We study the evolution of entanglement spectra, a "projected subspace" block entropy, and concurrence in the Schmidt vectors through the transition. The standard tool of Schmidt decomposition along with the existence of the unique MG point where the ground states are degenerate and known exactly, suggests the projection into two orthogonal subspaces that is useful even away from this point. Of these, one is a dominant five dimensional subspace containing the complete state at the MG point and the other contributes marginally, albeit with increasing weight as the number of spins is increased. We find that the marginally contributing subspace has a minimum von Neumann entropy in the vicinity of the dimerization transition. Entanglement content between pairs of spins in the Schmidt vectors, studied via concurrence, shows that those belonging to the dominant five dimensional subspace display a clear progress towards dimerization, with the concurrence vanishing on odd/even sublattices, again in the vicinity of the dimerization, and maximizing in the even/odd sublattices at the MG point. In contrast, study of the Schmidt vectors in the marginally contributing subspace, as well as in the projection of the ground state in this space, display pair concurrence which decrease on both the sublattices as the MG point is approached. The robustness of these observations indicate their possible usefulness in the study of models that have similar transitions, and have hitherto been difficult to study using standard entanglement signatures.

Reducing Memory Cost of Exact Diagonalization using Singular Value Decomposition

We present a modified Lanczos algorithm to diagonalize lattice Hamiltonians with dramatically reduced memory requirements, {\em without restricting to variational ansatzes}. The lattice of size $N$ is partitioned into two subclusters. At each iteration the Lanczos vector is projected into two sets of $n_{\rm svd}$ smaller subcluster vectors using singular value decomposition. For low entanglement entropy $S_{ee}$, (satisfied by short range Hamiltonians), the truncation error is expected to vanish as $\exp(-n_{\rm svd}^{1/S_{ee}})$. Convergence is tested for the Heisenberg model on Kagomé clusters of 24, 30 and 36 sites, with no lattice symmetries exploited, using less than 15GB of dynamical memory. Generalization of the Lanczos-SVD algorithm to multiple partitioning is discussed, and comparisons to other techniques are given.

Frustrated spin ladder with alternating spin-1 and spin-1/2 rungs

We study the impact of the diagonal frustrating couplings on the quantum phase diagram of a two-leg ladder composed of alternating spin-1 and spin-1/2 rungs. As the coupling strength is increased the system successively exhibits two gapped paramagnetic phases (a rung-singlet and a Haldane-like non-degenerate states) and two ferrimagnetic phases with different ferromagnetic moments per rung. The first two states are similar to the phases studied in the frustrated spin-1/2 ladder, whereas the magnetic phases appear as a result of the mixed-spin structure of the model. A detailed characterization of these phases is presented using density-matrix renormalization-group calculations, exact diagonalizations of periodic clusters, and an effective Hamiltonian approach inspired by the analysis of numerical data. The present theoretical study was motivated by the recent synthesis of the quasi-one-dimensional ferrimagnetic material Fe$^{II}$Fe$^{III}$ (trans-1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylate) exhibiting a similar ladder structure.

Entanglement and level crossings in frustrated ferromagnetic rings

We study the entanglement content of a class of mesoscopic tunable magnetic systems. The systems are closed finite spin-1/2 chains with ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interactions frustrated by antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interactions. The finite chains display a series of level crossings reflecting the incommensurate physics of the corresponding infinite-size chain. We present dramatic entanglement signatures characterizing these unusual level crossings. We focus on multi-spin and global measures of entanglement rather than only one-spin or two-spin entanglements. We compare and contrast the information obtained from these measures to that obtained from traditional condensed matter measures such as correlation functions.

Gapless points of dimerized quantum spin chains: analytical and numerical studies

We study the locations of the gapless points which occur for quantum spin chains of finite length (with a twisted boundary condition) at particular values of the nearest neighbor dimerization, as a function of the spin S and the number of sites. For strong dimerization and large values of S, a tunneling calculation reproduces the same results as those obtained from more involved field theoretic methods using the non-linear sigma-model approach. A different analytical calculation of the matrix element between the two Neel states gives a set of gapless points; for strong dimerization, these differ significantly from the tunneling values. Finally, the exact diagonalization method for a finite number of sites yields a set of gapless points which are in good agreement with the Neel state calculations for all values of the dimerization, but the agreement with the tunneling values is not very good even for large S. This raises questions about possible corrections to the tunneling results.

Renormalization group study of the Kondo problem at a junction of several Luttinger wires

We study a system consisting of a junction of N quantum wires, where the junction is characterized by a scalar S-matrix, and an impurity spin is coupled to the electrons close to the junction. The wires are modeled as weakly interacting Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids. We derive the renormalization group equations for the Kondo couplings of the spin to the electronic modes on different wires, and analyze the renormalization group flows and fixed points for different values of the initial Kondo couplings and of the junction S-matrix (such as the decoupled S-matrix and the Griffiths S-matrix). We generally find that the Kondo couplings flow towards large and antiferromagnetic values in one of two possible ways. For the Griffiths S-matrix, we study one of the strong coupling flows by a perturbative expansion in the inverse of the Kondo coupling; we find that at large distances, the system approaches the ferromagnetic fixed point of the decoupled S-matrix. For the decoupled S-matrix with antiferromagnetic Kondo couplings and weak inter-electron interactions, the flows are to one of two strong coupling fixed points in which all the channels are strongly coupled to each other through the impurity spin. But strong inter-electron interactions, with K_ρ< N/(N+2), stabilize a multi-channel fixed point in which the coupling between different channels goes to zero. We have also studied the temperature dependence of the conductance at the decoupled and Griffiths S-matrices.

Exact magnetization plateaus and phase transitions in spin-S Heisenberg antiferromagnets in arbitrary dimensions

We generalize a class of Heisenberg antiferromagnets in one, two and three dimensions, which have been shown to exhibit magnetization plateaus for spin-1/2. In a certain parameter range of the general model, which is formally defined in D dimensions, we obtain the exact ground state(s) in the presence of an external magnetic field for arbitrary values of spin. In this range, the magnetization remains a constant as a function of the external field, except at some special values of the field where there is a jump from one plateau to the next. The plateaus are formed at certain specific fractions of the full magnetization which are determined by the spin and the lattice. Our general spin-S result reproduces the known cases for spin-1/2 in various lattices. Furthermore, we argue that outside the exact regime, the mechanism for the plateau formation is different. This results in first order phase transitions along some of the plateaus as the coupling constant is varied. We rigorously show the existence of such transitions for some particular cases. Finally, we numerically analyze a spin-1 model in one dimension using exact diagonalization to obtain its complete phase diagram. It agrees with our analytic results.

A multi-channel fixed point for a Kondo spin coupled to a junction of Luttinger liquids

We study a system of an impurity spin coupled to a junction of several Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids using a renormalization group scheme. For the decoupled S-matrix at the junction, there is a range of Kondo couplings which flow to a multi-channel fixed point for repulsive inter-electron interactions; this is associated with a characteristic temperature dependence of the spin-flip scatterings. If the junction is governed by the Griffiths S-matrix, the Kondo couplings flow to a strong coupling fixed point where all the wires are decoupled.

Magnetic properties of a helical spin chain with alternating isotropic and anisotropic spins: magnetization plateaus and finite entropy

We study a model which could explain some of the unusual magnetic properties observed for the one-dimensional helical spin system Co(hfac)_2 NITPhOMe. One of the properties observed is that the magnetization shows plateaus near zero and near one-third of the saturation value if a magnetic field is applied along the helical axis, but not if the field is applied in the plane perpendicular to that axis. The system consists of a spin-1/2 chain in which cobalt ions (which are highly anisotropic with an easy axis e_i) and organic radicals (which are isotropic) alternate with each other. The easy axis of the cobalts e_i lie at an angle theta_i with respect to the helical axis, while the projection of e_{i+1} - e_i on the plane perpendicular to the helical axis is given by 2 pi /3. For temperatures and magnetic fields which are much smaller than the coupling between the nearest-neighbor cobalts and radicals, one can integrate out the radicals to obtain an Ising model for the cobalts; this enables one to compute the thermodynamic properties of the system using the transfer matrix approach. We consider a model in which the tilt angles theta_i are allowed to vary with i with period three; we find that for certain patterns of theta_i, the system shows the magnetization plateaus mentioned above. At the ends of the plateaus, the entropy is finite even at very low temperatures, while the magnetic susceptibility and specific heat also show some interesting features.

The Antiferromagnetic Sawtooth Lattice - the study of a two spin variant

Generalising recent studies on the sawtooth lattice, a two-spin variant of the model is considered. Numerical studies of the energy spectra and the relevant spin correlations in the problem are presented. Perturbation theory analysis of the model explaining some of the features of the numerical data is put forward and the spin wave spectra of the model corresponding to different phases are investigated.
