Weak Classicality in Coupled N-Level Quantum Systems

The notion of `weak classical limit' for coupled N-level quantum systems as N -> infinity is introduced to understand the precise sense in which one attains classicality. There exist proofs that a system becomes classical at large N. On the other hand, it is known that non-locality and entanglement, the two hallmarks of non-classicality, thrive even as N -> infinity. We reconcile these results in this paper by showing that so called classicality is not so much an inherent property of the system, as it is a consequence of limited experimental resources. Our focus is largely on non-locality, for which we study the Bell-CHSH and CGLMP inequalities for N-level systems.

Is non-locality stronger in higher dimensions?

A critique of a prescription of non-locality in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 4418 (2000)], [Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 040404 (2002)], [Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 130404 (2004)] that appears to be stronger and more general than the Bell-CHSH formulation is presented. It is shown that, contrary to expectations, this prescription fails to correctly identify a large family of maximally non-local Bell states.

Super-quantum states in SU(2) invariant $3 \times N$ level systems

Nonclassicality of quantum states is expressed in many shades, the most stringent of them being a new standard introduced recently in [Phys. Rev. A 89, 062110 (2014)]. This is accomplished by expanding the notion of local hidden variables (LHV) to generalised local hidden variables (GLHV), which renders many nonlocal states also classical. We investigate these super-quantum states (called exceptional in [Phys. Rev. A 89, 062110 (2014)]) in the family of $SU(2)$ invariant $3 \times N$ level systems. We show that all super-quantum states admit a universal geometrical description, and that they are most likely to lie on a line segment in the manifold, irrespective of the value of $N$. We also show that though the super - quantum states can be highly mixed, its relative rank with respect to the uniform state is always less than that of a state which admits a GLHV description.

Quasiprobability distributions in open quantum systems: spin-qubit systems

Quasiprobability distributions (QDs) in open quantum systems are investigated for $SU(2)$, spin like systems, having relevance to quantum optics and information. In this work, effect of both quantum non-demolition (QND) and dissipative open quantum systems, on the evolution of a number of spin QDs are investigated. Specifically, compact analytic expressions for the $W$, $P$, $Q$, and $F$ functions are obtained for some interesting single, two and three qubit states, undergoing general open system evolutions. Further, corresponding QDs are reported for an N qubit Dicke model and a spin-1 system. The existence of nonclassical characteristics are observed in all the systems investigated here. The study leads to a clear understanding of quantum to classical transition in a host of realistic physical scenarios. Variation of the amount of nonclassicality observed in the quantum systems, studied here, are also investigated using nonclassical volume.

Optimal observables to determine entanglement of a two qubit state

Experimental determination of entanglement is important not only to characterize the state and use it in quantum information, but also in understanding complicated phenomena such as phase transitions. In this paper we show that in many cases, it is possible to determine entanglement of a two qubit state, as represented by concurrence, with a few observables, most of which are local. In particular, rank 1 and rank 2 states need exclusively measurement of local observables while rank 3 states need measurement of just one correlation observable in addition to local observables. Only the rank 4 states are shown to require a more detailed tomography. The analysis also sheds light on the other measure, non separability since it is a lower bound on concurrence.

Non-locality in high spin systems with tensor correlations

We address the problem of detecting non-locality in coupled N level systems in the language of spin. Through a number of examples, we show that non-locality can be detected via a violation of the standard Bell inequality, irrespective of what N is, with correlations from observables of order k ~ 2s in the fundamental spin operators. We further show that, contrarily, if the order k is frozen, then non-locality eludes a detection when s >> k, leading to a weak classical limit. Armed with these results, we proceed to characterize observables that 'genuinely' reflect non-locality in higher dimensions, and demonstrate that one needs to go beyond the standard set-ups such as Stern-Gerlach and those with correlations involving measurement of spin projections along quantization axes.

Classical simulation of partially entangled states

We investigate the possibility of simulating partially entangled two qubit states by separable states of higher spins. First, we show that all partially entangled isotropic states can be simulated classically. We further investigate partially entangled pure states, and their binary mixtures and find that these systems forbid such a simulation, signifying that separability does not have a universal character in determining the inherent quantum nature of a state.

Classical simulation of entangled states

Description of nonclassicality of states has hitherto been through violation of Bell inequality and non-separability, with the latter being a stronger constraint. In this paper, we show that this can be further sharpened, by introducing the concept of classical simulation. A state admits classical simulation if it can be mimicked fully by a separable state of higher dimension. A nonclassical state, which we call exceptional, does not admit classical simulation. Focusing on two qubit states, we show that exceptionality is more stringent than violation of Bell inequality, and involves an intricate interplay of coherence and entanglement. The new criterion is shown to provide a natural description of entangled states which respect Bell inequality, and also a way of enumerating the classical resources that are required to simulate a quantum state. Possible implications to quantum dynamics and quantum information are briefly touched upon.

Compton Scattering in Plasma: Multiple Scattering Effects and Application to Laser-Plasma Acceleration

We explore the physics of electron acceleration in a plasma medium in an effective field theory framework. Employing a multiple Compton scattering mechanism, it is found that the acceleration can be sustained in such a medium so as to attain the energies up to the order of $O(100 \rm{MeV})$ within a centimeter. Also, the collimation and mono-energetic electron spectrum can be obtained by proper tuning of the plasma parameters with the photon frequency. The present work is potentially useful in understanding the physics of laser-plasma accelerators.

A quasi-particle description of $(2+1)$- flavor lattice QCD equation of state

A quasi-particle model has been employed to describe the $(2+1)$-flavor lattice QCD equation of state with physical quark masses. The interaction part of the equation of state has been mapped to the effective fugacities of otherwise non-interacting quasi-gluons and quasi-quarks. The mapping is found to be exact for the equation of state. The model leads to non-trivial dispersion relations for quasi-partons. The dispersion relations, effective quasi-particle number densities, and trace anomaly have been investigated employing the model.A Virial expansion for the EOS has further been obtained to investigate the role of interactions in quark-gluon plasma (QGP). Finally, Debye screening in QGP has been studied employing the model.

Collimation and acceleration of mono-energetic electron beams in Laser Plasma accelerators

Motivated by rapid advances in plasma based accelerators, we propose a simple mechanism for the production of highly collimated quasi monochromatic electrons beams. By considering Compton scattering of electrons (in the plasma) with virtual photons -- through an effective interaction --- we demonstrate angular collimation with a divergence less than 3 mrad quasi mono-energetic nature of the beam and an energy gain of O (1 GeV/cm), in laser induced accelerators.

Tomography, Control and Characterization of Entanglement in Three level Atomic System

We study the quantum correlations of the radiation emitted by three level atoms (cascade type) interacting with two driving fields. In the linear regime, and in the Weisskopf-Wigner approximation, we show that the atomic and the two-photon density matrix are equivalent to each other. This facilitates the tomography of the two mode state to be realized by measurements on either the atomic system or the emitted fields. While, in general, one needs 4^N measurements for the tomography of a N photon state, we show that one needs (N+1)^2-1 observables for the tomography of photons emitted by an atomic system. Thus there is an exponential reduction in the number of observables for the reconstruction of the class of N photon states emitted by atoms. We show that the driving field strengths and detunings provide the {\it control} parameters for the preparation of a specific target state. Finally, we study the characterization of entanglement of the two photon state. We observe that a characterization of entanglement in terms of a single parameter is not possible when the system is in a mixed state; therefore, we provide a description in terms of the newly introduced probability distribution for entanglement, in various regimes of interest.

Entanglement Dynamics in Two-Qubit Open System Interacting with a Squeezed Thermal Bath via Quantum Nondemolition interaction

We analyze the dynamics of entanglement in a two-qubit system interacting with an initially squeezed thermal environment via a quantum nondemolition system-reservoir interaction, with the system and reservoir assumed to be initially separable. We compare and contrast the decoherence of the two-qubit system in the case where the qubits are mutually close-by (`collective regime') or distant (`localized regime') with respect to the spatial variation of the environment. Sudden death of entanglement (as quantified by concurrence) is shown to occur in the localized case rather than in the collective case, where entanglement tends to `ring down'. A consequence of the QND character of the interaction is that the time-evolved fidelity of a Bell state never falls below $1/\sqrt{2}$, a fact that is useful for quantum communication applications like a quantum repeater. Using a novel quantification of mixed state entanglement, we show that there are noise regimes where even though entanglement vanishes, the state is still available for applications like NMR quantum computation, because of the presence of a pseudo-pure component.

Quarkonia in anisotropic hot QCD medium in a quasi-particle model

The fate of heavy quarkonia states has been investigated in QCD at high temperature when the plasma has a small momentum space anisotropy within a quasi-particle model. A real time static potential has been obtained from a Hard thermal loop expression for the gluon self-energy, by employing the quasi-parton equilibrium distribution functions extracted from hot QCD equations of state of $O(g^5)$ and $O(g^6\ln(1/g))$. Employing the potential, quarkonia melting has been studied. It is found that the equations of state and the momentum anisotropy cause significant modifications in the screening properties of the plasma.

Quasi-particle model for lattice QCD: quark-gluon plasma in heavy ion collisions

We propose a quasi-particle model to describe the lattice QCD equation of state for pure SU(3) gauge theory in its deconfined state, for $T \ge 1.5T_c$. The method involves mapping the interaction part of the equation of state to an effective fugacity of otherwise non-interacting quasi-gluons. We find that this mapping is exact. Using the quasi-gluon distribution function, we determine the energy density and the modified dispersion relation for the single particle energy, in which the trace anomaly is manifest. As an application, we first determine the Debye mass, and then the important transport parameters, {\it viz}, the shear viscosity, $η$ and the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio, $η/{\mathcal S}$. We find that both $η$ and $η/{\mathcal S}$ are sensitive to the interactions, and that the interactions significantly lower both $η$ and $η/\mathcal S$.

On the chromoelectric permittivity and Debye screening in hot QCD

We study the response functions (chromo-electric susceptibilities) for an interacting quark-gluon plasma. The interaction effects have been encoded in the effective fugacities for quasi-partons which are extracted self-consistently from the two equations of state for hot QCD. The first one is the fully perturbative $O(g^5)$ EOS and, the second one which is $O(g^6\ln(1/g))$, incorporates some non-perturbative effects. We find that response function shows large deviations from the ideal behavior. We further determine the temperature dependence of the Debye mass by fixing the effective coupling constant $Q^2$ which appears in the transport equation. We show that our formalism naturally yields the leading order HTL expression for the Debye mass if we employ the ideal EOS. Employing the Debye mass, we estimate the dissociation temperatures for various charmonium and bottomonium bound states. These results are consistent with the current theoretical studies.

Dynamics of entanglement in Two-Qubit Open System Interacting with a Squeezed Thermal Bath via Dissipative interaction

We study the dynamics of entanglement in a two-qubit system interacting with a squeezed thermal bath via a dissipative system-reservoir interaction with the system and reservoir assumed to be in a separable initial state. The resulting entanglement is studied by making use of a recently introduced measure of mixed state entanglement via a probability density function which gives a statistical and geometrical characterization of entanglement by exploring the entanglement content in the various subspaces spanning the two-qubit Hilbert space. We also make an application of the two-qubit dissipative dynamics to a simplified model of quantum repeaters.
