"The Carina Project": color magnitude diagram and radial distribution

We present B, V photometric data of the Carina Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy collected with the Wide Field Imager (WFI) available at the 2.2m MPI/ESO telescope. We briefly discuss the main features of the color magnitude diagram and in particular the mix of stellar populations present in this galaxy. A preliminary analysis of the spatial distribution of these populations over a substantial fraction of the body of the galaxy is also presented.

Multiwavelength Time Series Data of the LMC Cluster Reticulum

We present accurate multiwavelength UBVI time series data of the LMC cluster Reticulum. Data cover a time interval of ~ 6 yr and have been collected with SUSI1/2 and SOFI at NTT/ESO. For each band we collected approximately 30 short/long exposures and the total exposure times range from roughly 3500 (U, B), 6000s (V) to 8300s (I). The observing strategy and data reduction (DAOPHOTII/ALLFRAME) allowed us to reach a photometry accuracy of 0.02 magnitude from the tip of the Red Giant Branch well below the Turn-Off region. Even though this cluster presents a very low central density, we found a sizable sample of Blue Stragglers (BSs). We also selected stars with a variability index larger than 2, and interestingly enough we detected together with the RR Lyrae stars a large sample of variable stars around and below the TO region. Preliminary analysis on the luminosity variation indicate that these objects might be binary stars.

Detection of delta Scuti-like pulsation in H254, a pre-main sequence F-type star in IC 348

We present time series observations of intermediate mass PMS stars belonging to the young star cluster IC 348. The new data reveal that a young member of the cluster, H254, undergoes periodic light variations with delta Scuti-like characteristics. This occurrence provides an unambiguous evidence confirming the prediction that intermediate-mass pre-main sequence (PMS) stars should experience this transient instability during their approach to the main-sequence. On the basis of the measured frequency f=7.406 c/d, we are able to constrain the intrinsic stellar parameters of H254 by means of linear, non adiabatic, radial pulsation models. The range of the resulting luminosity and effective temperature permitted by the models is narrower than the observational values. In particular, the pulsation analysis allows to derive an independent estimate of the distance to IC 348 of about 320 pc. Further observations could either confirm the monoperiodic nature of H254 or reveal the presence of other frequencies.

BVI time series data of the Galactic Globular Cluster NGC3201. I. RR Lyrae stars

We present Johnson BV, and Kron-Cousins I-band time series data collected over three consecutive nights in a region of 13 arcmin^2 centered on the Galactic Globular Cluster (GGC) NGC3201. The time sampling of current CCD data allowed us to derive accurate light curves, and in turn mean magnitudes and colors for a sample of 53 RR Lyrae. To overcome the thorny problem of differential reddening affecting this cluster, we derived new empirical relations connecting the intrinsic (B-V) and (V-I) colors of fundamental ($RR_{ab}$) RR Lyrae to the luminosity amplitude, the metallicity, and the pulsation period. The key features of these relations are the following: i) they rely on stellar parameters which are not affected by reddening; ii) they supply accurate estimates of intrinsic colors across the fundamental instability strip and cover a wide metallicity range; iii) they were derived by neglecting the RR Lyrae that are affected by amplitude modulation. Moreover, the zero-point of the E(B-V) reddening scale was empirically checked using the large sample of RR Lyrae in M3 (Corwin & Carney 2001), a GGC affected by a vanishing reddening. According to these relations we estimated individual reddenings for RR Lyrae in our sample and the main results we found are the following: i) the mean cluster reddening based on E(B-V) color excesses is =0.30\pm0.03. iii) According to current individual E(B-V) and E(V-I) reddenings and theoretical predictions for Horizontal-Branch stars, we found that the true distance modulus for this cluster is 13.32\pm0.06 mag. iv) The comparison between present luminosity amplitudes and estimates available in the literature discloses that approximately 30% of fundamental RR Lyrae are affected by amplitude modulation (Blazhko effect).

The VIRMOS-VLT Deep Survey

The aim of the VIRMOS VLT Deep Survey (VVDS) is to study of the evolution of galaxies, large scale structures and AGNs from a sample of more than 150,000 galaxies with measured redshifts in the range 0<z<5+. The VVDS will rely on the VIMOS and NIRMOS wide field multi-object spectrographs, which the VIRMOS consortium is delivering to ESO. Together, they offer unprecedented multiplex capability in the wavelength range 0.37-1.8microns, allowing for large surveys to be carried out. The VVDS has several main aspects: (1) a deep multi-color imaging survey over 18deg^2 of more than one million galaxies, (2) a "wide" spectroscopic survey with more than 130,000 redshifts measured for objects brighter than IAB=22.5 over 18deg^2, (3) a "deep" survey with 50,000 redshifts measured to IAB=24, (4) ultra-deep" surveys with several thousand redshifts measured to IAB=25, (5) multi-wavelength observations with the VLA and XMM.

Pulsational M_V versus [Fe/H] relation(s) for globular cluster RR Lyrae variables

We use the results from recent computations of updated non-linear convective pulsating models to constrain the distance modulus of Galactic globular clusters through the observed periods of first overtone RRc pulsators. The resulting relation between the mean absolute magnitude of RR Lyrae stars and the heavy element content [Fe/H] appears well in the range of several previous empirical calibrations, but with a non linear dependence on [Fe/H] so that the slope of the relation increases when moving towards larger metallicities. On this ground, our results suggest that metal-poor ([Fe/H]<-1.5) and metal-rich ([Fe/H]>-1.5) variables follow two different linear -[Fe/H] relations. Application to RR Lyrae stars in the metal-poor globular clusters of the Large Magellanic Cloud provides a LMC distance modulus of the order of 18.6 mag, thus supporting the "long" distance scale. The comparison with recent predictions based on updated stellar evolution theory is shortly presented and discussed.

Pulsation in two Herbig Ae stars: HD 35929 and V351 Ori

New photometric observations of seven intermediate mass pre-main sequence delta Scuti candidates are presented. The periods and pulsation modes are derived for two of these stars, namely HD 35929 and V351 Ori. The comparison between observations and nonlinear pulsational models allows us to provide some initial constraints on their mass and evolutionary state. As an illustration we discuss the use of periods to identify the mode of pulsation in these two stars and to have an independent estimate of their distances.

An investigation of the revised CORS method based on theoretical models

Direct measurements of Cepheid radii are a key for understanding the physical structure of these variables, and in turn for constraining their pulsation properties. In this paper we discuss the numerical experiments we performed for testing the accuracy of Cepheid radii obtained by adopting both the pure Baade-Wesselink (BW) method and the revised CORS method, as well as the consistency of the physical assumptions on which these methods are based. We applied both the BW and the revised CORS methods to the synthetic light, color and radial velocity curves predicted by Cepheid full amplitude, nonlinear, convective models at solar chemical composition. We found that these methods systematically either underestimate or overestimate "theoretical" radii if radius determinations are based on optical (BVR) bands or on (VJK) bands, respectively. At the same time, current simulations suggest that CORS radii are in very good agreement with "theoretical" radii if the surface brightness is calibrated by adopting a bidimensional fit of atmosphere models which accounts for temperature, gravity, and bolometric correction variations along the pulsation cycle.

Theoretical Models for Classical Cepheids: IV. Mean Magnitudes and Colors and the Evaluation of Distance, Reddening and Metallicity

We discuss the metallicity effect on the theoretical visual and near-infrared PL and PLC relations of classical Cepheids, as based on nonlinear, nonlocal and time--dependent convective pulsating models at varying chemical composition. In view of the two usual methods of averaging (magnitude-weighted and intensity-weighted) observed magnitudes and colors over the full pulsation cycle, we briefly discuss the differences between static and mean quantities. We show that the behavior of the synthetic mean magnitudes and colors fully reproduces the observed trend of Galactic Cepheids, supporting the validity of the model predictions. In the second part of the paper we show how the estimate of the mean reddening and true distance modulus of a galaxy from Cepheid VK photometry depend on the adopted metal content, in the sense that larger metallicities drive the host galaxy to lower extinctions and distances. Conversely, self-consistent estimates of the Cepheid mean reddening, distance and metallicity may be derived if three-filter data are taken into account. By applying the theoretical PL and PLC relations to available BVK data of Cepheids in the Magellanic Clouds we eventually obtain Z \sim 0.008, E(B-V) \sim 0.02 mag, DM \sim 18.63 mag for LMC and Z \sim 0.004, E(B-V) \sim 0.01 mag., DM \sim 19.16 mag. for SMC. The discrepancy between such reddenings and the current values based on BVI data is briefly discussed.

RR Lyrae variables in M5 as a test of pulsational theory

We present B and V CCD photometry for variables in the cluster central region, adding new data for 32 variables and giving suitable light curves, mean magnitudes and corrected colors for 17 RR Lyrae. Implementing the data given in this paper with similar data already appeared in the literature we discuss a sample of 42 variables, as given by 22 RRab and 20 RRc, to the light of recent predictions from pulsational theories. We find that the observational evidence concerning M5 pulsators appears in marginal disagreement with predictions concerning the color of the First Overtone Blue Edge (FOBE), whereas a clear disagreement appears between the ZAHB luminosities predicted through evolutionary or pulsational theories.

A photometric study of the field RR Lyrae stars AW Dra, AQ Lyr and CN Lyr

We present CCD lightcurves for the three field RR Lyrae AQ Lyr, CN Lyr and AW Dra observed at the Teramo TNT telescope. Stellar temperatures have been derived from the observed mean colors, allowing a comparison with recent theoretical predictions on RR Lyrae lightcurves. As for the two metal rich pulsators in the sample we suggest that CN Lyr has been possibly misclassified, being a c-type pulsator. This gives a warning against the possible contamination with first overtone (FO) pulsators of observational samples of field ab type stars. On the other hand, if CN Lyr belongs to the low amplitude, b-type fundamental pulsators, it shows a lightcurve with a slow risetime not jet predicted by theory. AQ Lyrae appears as a metal rich ab type pulsator, with the expected luminosity but with amplitude lower than predicted by theory. Finally, we find that AW Dra behaves as a metal poor fundamental (F) pulsator, crossing the instability strip well above the corresponding Zero Age Horizontal Branch (ZAHB) luminosity level.

A photometric study of NGC 458

We present a CCD investigation of the poorly known SMC young Globular Cluster NGC 458. The NTT data, presented here, allowed us to study in detail the more internal regions of the cluster which are less contaminated by the field. On the basis of theoretical isochrones, a preliminary evaluation of the age is also given.

Cepheid Radii and the Cors Method Revisited

We have refined the CORS method, introduced in 1980 for the computation of the cepheid radii, in order to extend its applicability to recent and extensive sets of observations. The refinement is based on the computation, from observational data only, of one of the terms of the solving equation, previously based only on precise calibrations of photometric colours. A limited number of assumptions, generally accepted in the literature, is used.\par New radii are computed for about 70 cepheids, and the resulting P-R relation is discussed.

CCD PHOTOMETRY OF RR LYRAE STARS IN M5 AS A TEST FOR THE PULSATIONAL SCENARIO

In this paper we present new CCD investigations of RR Lyrae pulsators in the Oo.I globular cluster M5. B V curves of light for 15 RR Lyrae are presented. With the addition of further 11 curves of light by Storm, Carney and Beck (1991) one is dealing with a sample of 26 well studied cluster pulsators whose properties have been implemented with similar data for RR Lyrae in clusters M3, M15, M68 to allow a comparison with the theoretical scenario recently presented by Bono and Stellingwerf (1994). On this basis, we discuss the distribution of stars in the period amplitude diagram, disclosing a substantial reduction of Sandage's period shift. We suggest that theoretical constraints concerning periods and amplitudes could allow information on masses and luminosity of the pulsators directly from Bailey's diagram only. Static temperatures have been derived for all stars in the sample, discussing the dependence on the temperature of the observed pulsational properties.

Bright Stars in the Galactic Globular M5

We present a CCD investigation of the galactic globular M5 aimed to increase the statistical relevance of the available sample of evolving bright stars. Previous investigations, limited to the outer cluster region, have been extended toward the cluster center, more than doubling the number of observed luminous stars. On this basis, we discuss a statistically relevant sample, rich of 415 HB stars. The occurrence of a gap in the blue side of the HB is suggested. Comparison to the current evolutionary scenario discloses a good agreement concerning both the C-M diagram location and the relative abundance of stars in the advanced evolutionary phases, supporting our present knowledge of the evolution of low mass stars. Determination of the amount of the original helium content through the ratio R N(HB)/N(RGB) gives $Y = 0.22 \pm 0.02$.
