On the Blandford - Znajek mechanism of the energy loss of a rotating black hole

The Grad--Shafranov approach to the problem of the structure of the black hole magnetosphere is discussed. For the double transonic flow, the number of boundary conditions in the pair creation region is shown to be sufficient to determine not only the longitudinal electric current, but also the angular velocity of a flow as a solution to a problem. As a result, the energy loss is determined by the physical parameters at the particle creation region rather than the "boundary conditions" at the event horizon.

On the particle acceleration near the light surface of radio pulsars

The two-fluid effects on the radial outflow of relativistic electron-positron plasma are considered. It is shown that for large enough Michel magnetization parameter (1969) and multiplication parameter, the one-fluid MHD approximation remains correct in the whole region where |E| < |B|. In the case in which the longitudinal electric current is smaller than the Goldreich-Julian one, the acceleration of particles is determined near the light surface where |E| = |B|. It is shown that, as in the previously considered cylindrical geometry (Beskin, Gurevich & Istomin 1983), almost all electromagnetic energy is transformed into the energy of particles in the narrow boundary layer. The relative thickness of this layer is shown to be of the order of the inverse of multiplication parameter.

On the self-consistent model of the axisymmetric radio pulsar magnetosphere

We consider a model of axisymmetric neutron star magnetosphere. In our approach, the current density in the region of open field lines is constant and the returning current flows in a narrow layer along the separatrix. In this case, the stream equation describing the magnetic field structure is linear both in the open and closed regions, the main problem lying in matching the solutions along the separatrix (Okamoto 1974; Lyubarskii 1990). We demonstrate that it is the stability condition on the separatrix that allows us to obtain a unique solution of the problem. In particular, the zero point of magnetic field is shown to locate near the light cylinder. Moreover, the hypothesis of the existence of the nonlinear Ohm's Law (Beskin, Gurevich & Istomin 1983) connecting the potential drop in the pair creation region and the longitudinal electric current flowing in the magnetosphere is confirmed.
