Nonclassical photocounting statistics with a single on-off detector

Any single on-off photocounter, which can only detect the presence or absence of photons without discriminating their number, is not capable of identifying nonclassical nature of light. This limitation arises because any photocounting statistics obtained with such a detector can be easily reproduced with coherent states of a light mode. We show that a simple modification of an on-off detector -- introducing controlled attenuation as a tunable setting -- enables such detectors to reveal nonclassical properties of radiation fields.

Latent optical nonclassicality of conditionally prepared states

The lack of information obtained from informationally incomplete quantum measurements can prevent the detection of quantum resources, such as optical nonclassicality. We develop a technique that overcomes this limitation for single-mode quantum states conditionally prepared through measurements on another mode of a two-mode state. This task is performed by testing steering of latent nonclassicality -- a class of correlations beyond quantum entanglement and quantum discord -- for which we introduce a rigorous description.

Tight inequalities for nonclassicality of measurement statistics

In quantum optics, measurement statistics -- for example, photocounting statistics -- are considered nonclassical if they cannot be reproduced with statistical mixtures of classical radiation fields. We have formulated a necessary and sufficient condition for such nonclassicality. This condition is given by a set of inequalities that tightly bound the convex set of probabilities associated with classical electromagnetic radiation. Analytical forms for full sets and subsets of these inequalities are obtained for important cases of realistic photocounting measurements and unbalanced homodyne detection. As an example, we consider photocounting statistics of phase-squeezed coherent states. Contrary to a common intuition, the analysis developed here reveals distinct nonclassical properties of these statistics that can be experimentally corroborated with minimal resources.

Photon-number resolution with microwave Josephson photomultipliers

We study counting photons confined in a mode of a microwave resonator via repeated measurements by a Josephson photomultiplier (JPM). The considered JPM is essentially a flux-biased phase qubit operating as a single-photon detector. We identify optimal operational regimes that maximize photon-number resolution within a predetermined range. Two counting techniques are studied. The first is to count the total number of clicks in the measurement sequence. The second involves counting the number of clicks until the occurrence of either the first no-click event or the end of the measurement sequence. Our theoretical methods employ the derived positive operator-valued measures for the considered photocounting techniques and the introduced measure of the photon-number resolution. The results reveal that the resolution decrease in both cases is mainly caused by the JPM relaxation. As an example, we show how the obtained results can be used for practical testing nonclassical properties of electromagnetic radiation in a microwave resonator.

Nonclassical correlations of radiation in relation to Bell nonlocality

We analyze nonclassical correlations between outcomes of measurements conducted on two spatial radiation modes. These correlations cannot be simulated with statistical mixtures of coherent states or, more generally, with non-negative phase-space functions of quantum states and measurements. We argue that nonclassical correlations are naturally related to Bell nonlocality, the former being a more general class of quantum correlations. Indeed, it is known that local realistic as well as noncontextual models correspond to non-negative solutions to a system of linear equations for the joint probability distributions of all observables. We demonstrate that nonclassical correlations correspond to a particular solution to this system, which may have negative values even if local realism is not violated. A modification of Bell inequalities enables us to test such correlations. At the same time, our approach leads to a formulation of Bell inequalities applicable also to continuous variables. The results are illustrated with two-mode squeezed vacuum states and with hybrid entangled states (Schrödinger-Cat states), one mode being analyzed by balanced and the other one by unbalanced homodyne detection.
