Robust optical readout and characterization of nuclear spin transitions in nitrogen-vacancy ensembles in diamond

Nuclear spin ensembles in diamond are promising candidates for quantum sensing applications, including rotation sensing. Here we perform a characterization of the optically detected nuclear-spin transitions associated with the 14N nuclear spin within diamond nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers. We observe nuclear-spin-dependent fluorescence with the contrast of optically detected 14N nuclear Rabi oscillations comparable to that of the NV electron spin. Using Ramsey spectroscopy, we investigate the temperature and magnetic-field dependence of the nuclear spin transitions in the 77.5-420 K and 350-675 G range, respectively. The nuclear quadrupole coupling constant Q was found to vary with temperature T yielding d|Q|/dT=-35.0(2) Hz/K at T=297 K. The temperature and magnetic field dependencies reported here are important for quantum sensing applications such as rotation sensing and potentially for applications in quantum information processing.

Modulation spectroscopy of Rydberg atoms in an optical lattice

We develop and study quantum and semi-classical models of Rydberg-atom spectroscopy in amplitude-modulated optical lattices. Both initial- and target-state Rydberg atoms are trapped in the lattice. Unlike in any other spectroscopic scheme, the modulation-induced ponderomotive coupling between the Rydberg states is spatially periodic and perfectly phase-locked to the lattice trapping potentials. This leads to a novel type of sub-Doppler mechanism, which we explain in detail. In our exact quantum model, we solve the time-dependent Schrödinger equation in the product space of center-of-mass (COM) momentum states and the internal-state space. We also develop a perturbative model based on the band structure in the lattice and Fermi's golden rule, as well as a semi-classical trajectory model in which the COM is treated classically and the internal-state dynamics quantum-mechanically. In all models we obtain the spectrum of the target Rydberg-state population versus the lattice modulation frequency, averaged over the initial thermal COM momentum distribution of the atoms. We investigate the quantum-classical correspondence of the problem in several parameter regimes and exhibit spectral features that arise from vibrational COM coherences and rotary-echo effects. Applications in Rydberg-atom spectroscopy are discussed.

Cooling in reduced period optical lattices: non-zero Raman detuning

In a previous paper [Phys. Rev. A 72, 033415 (2005)], it was shown that sub-Doppler cooling occurs in a standing-wave Raman scheme (SWRS) that can lead to reduced period optical lattices. These calculations are extended to allow for non-zero detuning of the Raman transitions. New physical phenomena are encountered, including cooling to non-zero velocities, combinations of Sisyphus and "corkscrew" polarization cooling, and somewhat unusual origins of the friction force. The calculations are carried out in a semi-classical approximation and a dressed state picture is introduced to aid in the interpretation of the results.
