Remarks on the mass-angular momentum relations for two extreme Kerr sources in equilibrium

The general analysis of the relations between masses and angular momenta in the configurations composed of two balancing extremal Kerr particles is made on the basis of two exact solutions arising as extreme limits of the well-known double-Kerr spacetime. We show that the inequality M^2 >= |J| characteristic of an isolated Kerr black hole is verified by all the extremal components of the Tomimatsu and Dietz-Hoenselaers solutions. At the same time, the inequality can be violated by the total masses and total angular momenta of these binary systems, and we identify all the cases when such violation occurs.

On interrelations between Sibgatullin's and Alekseev's approaches to the construction of exact solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations

The integral equations involved in Alekseev's "monodromy transform" technique are shown to be simple combinations of Sibgatullin's integral equations and normalizing conditions. An additional complex conjugation introduced by Alekseev in the integrands makes his scheme mathematically inconsistent; besides, in the electrovac case all Alekseev's principal value integrals contain an intrinsic error which has never been identified before. We also explain how operates a non-trivial double-step algorithm devised by Alekseev for rewriting, by purely algebraic manipulations and in a different (more complicated) parameter set, any particular specialization of the known analytically extended N-soliton electrovac solution obtained in 1995 with the aid of Sibgatullin's method.

On the equilibrium of two oppositely charged masses in general relativity

It is shown that the equilibrium configurations of two spherical masses carrying charges of opposite sign that are present in Bonnor's approximate model for two charged particles and also in the exact double-Reissner-Nordstrom solution are formed due to the additional electric field of the repulsive character induced in the black-hole constituent by its overcharged partner. A three-parameter family of such configurations is pointed out.

Analogs of the double-Reissner-Nordstrom solution in magnetostatics and dilaton gravity: mathematical description and some physical properties

In this paper we consider a magnetic analog of the double-Reissner-Nordstrom solution and construct the corresponding magnetic potential A_φin the explicit form. The behavior of the resulting solution under the Harrison transformation then naturally singles out the asymmetric black diholes - configurations composed of two non-extreme black holes possessing unequal masses, and charges equal in magnitude but opposite in sign - as its most general subclass for which equilibrium of the black-hole constituents can be achieved with the aid of the external magnetic (or electric) field. We also generalize the double-Reissner-Nordstrom solution to the dilaton gravity with arbitrary dilaton coupling, yielding as the result the 4-dimensional double-Gibbons-Maeda spacetime. The study of some physical properties of the solutions obtained leads, in particular, to very simple formulas for the areas of the horizons and surface gravities.

Exact solution for the simplest binary system of Kerr black holes

The full metric describing two counter-rotating identical Kerr black holes separated by a massless strut is derived in the explicit analytical form. It contains three arbitrary parameters which are the Komar mass M, Komar angular momentum per unit mass a of one of the black holes (the other has the same mass and equal but opposite angular momentum) and the coordinate distance R between the centers of the horizons. In the limit of extreme black holes, the metric becomes a special member of the Kinnersly-Chitre five-parameter family of vacuum solutions generalizing the Tomimatsu-Sato delta=2 spacetime, and we present the complete set of metrical fields defining this limit.

On a static charged fluid around a magnetized mass

We show that any magnetostatic axially symmetric solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equations can be endowed with a specific charged fluid source of the Polanco et al type via a simple procedure requiring the knowledge of exclusively the magnetostatic seed spacetime. Using this procedure we construct yet another exact solution for a massive magnetic dipole surrounded by a static charged fluid which is different from the Polanco et al metric.

On the physical parametrization and magnetic analogs of the Emparan-Teo dihole solution

The Emparan-Teo non-extremal black dihole solution is reparametrized using Komar quantities and the separation distance as arbitrary parameters. We show how the potential $A_3$ can be calculated for the magnetic analogs of this solution in the Einstein-Maxwell and Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theories. We also demonstrate that, similar to the extreme case, the external magnetic field can remove the supporting strut in the non-extremal black dihole too.

Singular sources in the Demianski-Newman spacetimes

The analysis of singular regions in the NUT solutions carried out in the recent paper (Manko and Ruiz, 2005 Class. Quantum Grav. 22, p.3555) is now extended to the Demianski-Newman vacuum and electrovacuum spacetimes. We show that the effect which produces the NUT parameter in a more general situation remains essentially the same as in the purely NUT solutions: it introduces the semi-infinite singularities of infinite angular momenta and positive or negative masses depending on the interrelations between the parameters; the presence of the electromagnetic field additionally endows the singularities with electric and magnetic charges. The exact formulae describing the mass, charges and angular momentum distributions in the Demianski-Newman solutions are obtained and concise general expressions P_n=(m+iν)(ia)^n, Q_n=(q+ib)(ia)^n for the entire set of the respective Beig-Simon multipole moments are derived. These moments correspond to a unique choice of the integration constant in the expression of the metric function ωwhich is different from the original choice made by Demianski and Newman.

The double-Kerr equilibrium configurations involving one extreme object

We demonstrate the existence of equilibrium states in the limiting cases of the double-Kerr solution when one of the constituents is an extreme object. In the `extreme-subextreme' case the negative mass of one of the constituents is required for the balance, whereas in the `extreme-superextreme' equilibrium configurations both Kerr particles may have positive masses. We also show that the well-known relation |J|=M^2 between the mass and angular momentum in the extreme single Kerr solution ceases to be a characteristic property of the extreme Kerr particle in a binary system.

Physical interpretation of NUT solution

We show that the well-known NUT solution can be correctly interpreted as describing the exterior field of two counter-rotating semi-infinite sources possessing negative masses and infinite angular momenta which are attached to the poles of a static finite rod of positive mass.

How can exact and approximate solutions of Einstein's field equations be compared?

The problem of comparison of the stationary axisymmetric vacuum solutions obtained within the framework of exact and approximate approaches for the description of the same general relativistic systems is considered. We suggest two ways of carrying out such comparison: (i) through the calculation of the Ernst complex potential associated with the approximate solution whose form on the symmetry axis is subsequently used for the identification of the exact solution possessing the same multipole structure, and (ii) the generation of approximate solutions from exact ones by expanding the latter in series of powers of a small parameter. The central result of our paper is the derivation of the correct approximate analogues of the double-Kerr solution possessing the physically meaningful equilibrium configurations. We also show that the interpretation of an approximate solution originally attributed to it on the basis of some general physical suppositions may not coincide with its true nature established with the aid of a more accurate technique.

On the discrepancy between two approaches to the equilibrium problem for spinning particles

We show that the absence of equilibrium states of two uncharged spinning particles located on the symmetry axis, revealed in an approximate approach recently employed by Bonnor, can be explained by a non-general character of his approximation scheme which lacks an important arbitrary parameter representing a strut. The absence of this parameter introduces an artificial restriction on the particles' angular momenta, making it impossible to find a physical solution to the balance equations.

Determining the surface density distribution in massive galactic disks with a central black hole

An efficient method is developed which allows the calculation of distributions of the surface density in the equilibrium disk configurations with an isolated point mass at the center corresponding to known distributions of the angular velocity. We demonstrate the existence of the upper limit for the ratio `mass of the galactic disk / mass of the central black hole' which essentially depends on the form of rotation-curves.

The rotation curve and mass-distribution in highly flattened galaxies

A new method is developed which permits the reconstruction of the surface-density distribution in the galactic disk of finite radius from an arbitrary smooth distribution of the angular velocity via two simple quadratures. The existence of upper limits for disk's mass and radius during the analytic continuation of rotation curves into the hidden (non-radiating) part of the disk is demonstrated.
