Perturbative Symmetry Approach for Differential-Difference Equations

We propose a new method for solution of the integrability problem for evolutionary differential-difference equations of arbitrary order. It enables us to produce necessary integrability conditions, to determine whether a given equation is integrable or not, and to advance in classification of integrable equations. In this paper we define and develop symbolic representation for the difference polynomial ring, difference operators and formal series. In order to formulate necessary integrability conditions, we introduce a novel quasi-local extension of the difference ring. It enables us to progress in classification of integrable differential-difference evolutionary equations of arbitrary order. In particular, we solve the problem of classification of integrable equations of order $(-3,3)$ for the important subclass of quasi-linear equations and produce a list of 17 equations satisfying the necessary integrability conditions. For every equation from the list we present an infinite family of integrable higher order relatives. Some of the equations obtained are new.

Integrable systems of the intermediate long wave type in 2+1 dimensions

We classify 2+1 dimensional integrable systems with nonlocality of the intermediate long wave type. Links to the 2+1 dimensional waterbag system are established. Dimensional reductions of integrable systems constructed in this paper provide dispersive regularisations of hydrodynamic equations governing propagation of long nonlinear waves in a shear flow with piecewise linear velocity profile (for special values of vorticities).

On a class of integrable Hamiltonian equations in 2+1 dimensions

We classify integrable Hamiltonian equations in 3D with the Hamiltonian operator d/dx, where the Hamiltonian density h(u, w) is a function of two variables: dependent variable u and the non-locality w such that w_x=u_y. Based on the method of hydrodynamic reductions, the integrability conditions are derived (in the form of an involutive PDE system for the Hamiltonian density h). We show that the generic integrable density is expressed in terms of the Weierstrass elliptic functions. Dispersionless Lax pairs, commuting flows and dispersive deformations of the resulting equations are also discussed.

On a class of 2D integrable lattice equations

We develop a new approach to the classification of integrable equations of the form $$ u_{xy}=f(u, u_x, u_y, \triangle_z u \triangle_{\bar z}u, \triangle_{z\bar z}u), $$ where $\triangle_{ z}$ and $\triangle_{\bar z}$ are the forward/backward discrete derivatives. The following 2-step classification procedure is proposed: (1) First we require that the dispersionless limit of the equation is integrable, that is, its characteristic variety defines a conformal structure which is Einstein-Weyl on every solution. (2) Secondly, to the candidate equations selected at the previous step we apply the test of Darboux integrability of reductions obtained by imposing suitable cut-off conditions.

Quasilinear systems with linearizable characteristic webs

We classify quasilinear systems in Riemann invariants whose characteristic webs are linearizable on every solution. Although the linearizability of an individual web is a rather nontrivial differential constraint, the requirement of linearizability of characteristic webs on all solutions imposes simple second-order constraints for the characteristic speeds of the system. It is demonstrated that every such system with n>3 components can be transformed by a reciprocal transformation to n uncoupled Hopf equations. All our considerations are local.

On the classification of discrete Hirota-type equations in 3D

In the series of recent publications we have proposed a novel approach to the classification of integrable differential/difference equations in 3D based on the requirement that hydrodynamic reductions of the corresponding dispersionless limits are `inherited' by the dispersive equations. In this paper we extend this to the fully discrete case. Our only constraint is that the initial ansatz possesses a non-degenerate dispersionless limit (this is the case for all known Hirota-type equations). Based on the method of deformations of hydrodynamic reductions, we classify discrete 3D integrable Hirota-type equations within various particularly interesting subclasses. Our method can be viewed as an alternative to the conventional multi-dimensional consistency approach.

Towards the classification of integrable differential-difference equations in 2 + 1 dimensions

We address the problem of classification of integrable differential-difference equations in 2+1 dimensions with one/two discrete variables. Our approach is based on the method of hydrodynamic reductions and its generalisation to dispersive equations. We obtain a number of classification results of scalar integrable equations including that of the intermediate long wave and Toda type.

Dispersive deformations of Hamiltonian systems of hydrodynamic type in 2+1 dimensions

We develop a theory of integrable dispersive deformations of 2+1 dimensional Hamiltonian systems of hydrodynamic type following the scheme proposed by Dubrovin and his collaborators in 1+1 dimensions. Our results show that the multi-dimensional situation is far more rigid, and generic Hamiltonians are not deformable. As an illustration we discuss a particular class of two-component Hamiltonian systems, establishing the triviality of first order deformations and classifying Hamiltonians possessing nontrivial deformations of the second order.

On the classification of scalar evolutionary integrable equations in $2+1$ dimensions

We consider evolutionary equations of the form $u_t=F(u, w)$ where $w=D_x^{-1}D_yu$ is the nonlocality, and the right hand side $F$ is polynomial in the derivatives of $u$ and $w$. The recent paper \cite{FMN} provides a complete list of integrable third order equations of this kind. Here we extend the classification to fifth order equations. Besides the known examples of Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP), Veselov-Novikov (VN) and Harry Dym (HD) equations, as well as fifth order analogues and modifications thereof, our list contains a number of equations which are apparently new. We conjecture that our examples exhaust the list of scalar polynomial integrable equations with the nonlocality $w$. The classification procedure consists of two steps. First, we classify quasilinear systems which may (potentially) occur as dispersionless limits of integrable scalar evolutionary equations. After that we reconstruct dispersive terms based on the requirement of the inheritance of hydrodynamic reductions of the dispersionless limit by the full dispersive equation.

Integrable equations in 2+1-dimensions: deformations of dispersionless limits

We classify integrable third order equations in 2+1 dimensions which generalize the examples of Kadomtsev-Petviashvili, Veselov-Novikov and Harry Dym equations. Our approach is based on the observation that dispersionless limits of integrable systems in 2+1 dimensions possess infinitely many multi-phase solutions coming from the so-called hydrodynamic reductions. %Conversely, the requirement of the existence of hydrodynamic reductions proves to be an efficient classification criterion. In this paper we adopt a novel perturbative approach to the classification problem. Based on the method of hydrodynamic reductions, we first classify integrable quasilinear systems which may (potentially) occur as dispersionless limits of soliton equations in 2+1 dimensions. To reconstruct dispersive deformations, we require that all hydrodynamic reductions of the dispersionless limit are inherited by the corresponding dispersive counterpart. This procedure leads to a complete list of integrable third order equations, some of which are apparently new.

Perturbative Symmetry Approach

Perturbative Symmetry Approach is formulated in symbolic representation. Easily verifiable integrability conditions of a given equation are constructed in the frame of the approach. Generalisation for the case of non-local and non-evolution equations is disscused. Application of the theory to the Benjamin-Ono and Camassa-Holm type equations is considered.
