Spin Dynamics of $Ni Cl_2-4SC(NH_2)_2$ in the Field-Induced Ordered Phase

$Ni Cl_2$-$4SC(NH_2)_2$ (known as DTN) is a spin-1 material with a strong single-ion anisotropy that is regarded as a new candidate for Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of spin degrees of freedom. We present a systematic study of the low-energy excitation spectrum of DTN in the field-induced magnetically ordered phase by means of high-field electron spin resonance measurements at temperatures down to 0.45 K. We argue that two gapped modes observed in the experiment can be consistently interpreted within a four-sublattice antiferromagnet model with a finite interaction between two tetragonal subsystems and unbroken axial symmetry. The latter is crucial for the interpretation of the field-induced ordering in DTN in terms of BEC.

Macroscopic evidence for quantum criticality and field-induced quantum fluctuations in cuprate superconductors

We present macroscopic experimental evidence for field-induced microscopic quantum fluctuations in different hole- and electron-type cuprate superconductors with varying doping levels and numbers of CuO$_2$ layers per unit cell. The significant suppression of the zero-temperature in-plane magnetic irreversibility field relative to the paramagnetic field in all cuprate superconductors suggests strong quantum fluctuations due to the proximity of the cuprates to quantum criticality.

Using magnetostriction to measure the spin-spin correlation function and magnetoelastic coupling in the quantum magnet NiCl$_2$-4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$

We report a method for determining the spatial dependence of the magnetic exchange coupling, $dJ/dr$, from magnetostriction measurements of a quantum magnet. The organic Ni $S = 1$ system NiCl$_2$-4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$ exhibits lattice distortions in response to field-induced canted antiferromagnetism between $H_{c1} = 2.1$ T and $H_{c2} = 12.6$ T. We are able to model the magnetostriction in terms of uniaxial stress on the sample created by magnetic interactions between neighboring Ni atoms along the c-axis. The uniaxial strain is equal to $(1/E)dJ_c/dx_c < S_{\bf r} \cdot S_{{\bf r}+ {\bf e}_c} >$, where $E$, $J_c$, $x_c$ and ${\bf e}_c$ are the Young's modulus, the nearest neighbor (NN) exchange coupling, the variable lattice parameter, and the relative vector between NN sites along the c-axis. We present magnetostriction data taken at 25 mK together with Quantum Monte Carlo calculations of the NN spin-spin correlation function that are in excellent agreement with each other. We have also measured Young's modulus using resonant ultrasound, and we can thus extract $dJ_c/dx_c = 2.5$ K/$Å$, yielding a total change in $J_c$ between $H_{c1}$ and $H_{c2}$ of 5.5 mK or 0.25% in response to an 0.022% change in length of the sample.

Magnetic Excitations in the Spin-1 Anisotropic Heisenberg Antiferromagnetic Chain System NiCl$_2$-4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$

NiCl$_2$-4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$ (DTN) is a quantum S=1 chain system with strong easy-pane anisotropy and a new candidate for the Bose-Einstein condensation of the spin degrees of freedom. ESR studies of magnetic excitations in DTN in fields up to 25 T are presented. Based on analysis of the single-magnon excitation mode in the high-field spin-polarized phase and previous experimental results [Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 077204 (2006)], a revised set of spin-Hamiltonian parameters is obtained. Our results yield $D=8.9$ K, $J_c=2.2$ K, and $J_{a,b}=0.18$ K for the anisotropy, intrachain, and interchain exchange interactions, respectively. These values are used to calculate the antiferromagnetic phase boundary, magnetization and the frequency-field dependence of two-magnon bound-state excitations predicted by theory and observed in DTN for the first time. Excellent quantitative agreement with experimental data is obtained.

Magnetostriction in the Bose-Einstein Condensate quantum magnet NiCl2-4SC(NH2)2

The quantum magnet NiCl$_2$-4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$ is a candidate for observing Bose-Einstein Condensation of spin degrees of freedom in applied magnetic fields. An XY antiferromagnetic ordered state occurs in a dome-shaped region of the temperature-field phase diagram between H$_{c1}$ = 2.1 T and H$_{c2}$ = 12.6 T and below 1.2 K. BEC corresponds to the field-induced quantum phase transition into the ordered state. We investigate magnetostriction in single crystals of this compound at dilution refrigerator temperatures in magnetic fields up to 18 T, and as a function of magnetic field angle. We show that significant changes in the lattice parameters are induced by magnetic fields, and argue that these result from antiferromagnetic couplings between the Ni spins along the tetragonal c-axis. The magnetic phase diagram as a function of temperature, field, and field angle can be extracted from these data. We discuss the implications of these results to Bose-Einstein Condensation in this system.

On the Bose-Einstein Condensation of Magnons in Cs2CuCl4

In a recent paper \cite{Radu}, Radu \textit{et al.} report experimental results they claim to support Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of magnons in Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$. It is true that an experimentally measured critical power law scaling exponent in agreement with the BEC universality class would support the realization of a BEC in magnetic systems that order as a canted antiferromagnet. It can be shown, however, that the claim of Radu {\it et al.} is overstated in this instance, because their determination of the critical exponent $ϕ$ relies on a model-dependent theoretical approximation to the critical field $H_{\textrm{c1}}$ for which the associated errors are neglected. We show that when these errors are included, the uncertainty in the obtained exponent is so large that the available experimental data cannot be used to differentiate between contending universality classes.

Bose-Einstein Condensation of S = 1 Ni spin degrees of freedom in NiCl2-4SC(NH2)2

It has recently been suggested that the organic compound NiCl$_2$-4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$ (DTN) exhibits Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) of the Ni spin degrees of freedom for fields applied along the tetragonal c-axis. The Ni spins exhibit 3D XY-type antiferromagnetic order above a field-induced quantum critical point at $H_{c1} \sim 2$ T. The Ni spin fluid can be characterized as a system of effective bosons with a hard-core repulsive interaction in which the antiferromagnetic state corresponds to a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of the phase coherent $S = 1$ Ni spin system. We have investigated the the high-field phase diagram and the occurrence of BEC in DTN by means of specific heat and magnetocaloric effect measurements to dilution refrigerator temperatures. Our results indicate that a key prediction of BEC is satisfied; the magnetic field-temperature quantum phase transition line $H_c(T)-H_{c1} \propto T^α$ approaches a power-law at low temperatures, with an exponent $α= 1.47 \pm 0.06$ at the quantum critical point, consistent with the BEC theory prediction of $α= 1.5$.

Experimental Investigation of the Competing Orders and Quantum Criticality in Hole- and Electron-Doped Cuprate Superconductors

We investigate the issues of competing orders and quantum criticality in cuprate superconductors via experimental studies of the high-field thermodynamic phase diagrams and the quasiparticle tunneling spectroscopy. Our results suggest substantial field-induced quantum fluctuations in all cuprates investigated, and their correlation with quasiparticle spectra implies that both electron- (n-type) and hole-doped (p-type) cuprate superconductors are in close proximity to a quantum critical point that separates a pure superconducting (SC) phase from a phase consisting of coexisting SC and a competing order. We further suggests that the relevant competing order is likely a spin-density wave (SDW) or a charge density wave (CDW), which can couple to an in-plane Cu-O bond stretching longitudinal optical (LO) phonon mode in the p-type cuprates but not in the n-type cuprates. This cooperative interaction may account for the pseudogap phenomenon above Tc only in the p-type cuprate superconductors.

Quasiparticle spectroscopy and high-field phase diagrams of cuprate superconductors -- An investigation of competing orders and quantum criticality

We present scanning tunneling spectroscopic and high-field thermodynamic studies of hole- and electron-doped (p- and n-type) cuprate superconductors. Our experimental results are consistent with the notion that the ground state of cuprates is in proximity to a quantum critical point (QCP) that separates a pure superconducting (SC) phase from a phase comprised of coexisting SC and a competing order, and the competing order is likely a spin-density wave (SDW). The effect of applied magnetic field, tunneling current, and disorder on the revelation of competing orders and on the low-energy excitations of the cuprates is discussed.

Dimensionality of superconductivity in the infinite-layer high-temperature cuprate Sr0.9M0.1CuO2 (M = La, Gd)

The high magnetic field phase diagram of the electron-doped infinite layer high-temperature superconducting (high-T_c) compound Sr_{0.9}La_{0.1}CuO_2 was probed by means of penetration depth and magnetization measurements in pulsed fields to 60 T. An anisotropy ratio of 8 was detected for the upper critical fields with H parallel (H_{c2}^{ab}) and perpendicular (H_{c2}^c) to the CuO_2 planes, with H_{c2}^{ab} extrapolating to near the Pauli paramagnetic limit of 160 T. The longer superconducting coherence length than the lattice constant along the c-axis indicates that the orbital degrees of freedom of the pairing wavefunction are three dimensional. By contrast, low-field magnetization and specific heat measurements of Sr_{0.9}Gd_{0.1}CuO_2 indicate a coexistence of bulk s-wave superconductivity with large moment Gd paramagnetism close to the CuO_2 planes, suggesting a strong confinement of the spin degrees of freedom of the Cooper pair to the CuO_2 planes. The region between H_{c2}^{ab} and the irreversibility line in the magnetization, H_{irr}^{ab}, is anomalously large for an electron-doped high-T_c cuprate, suggesting the existence of additional quantum fluctuations perhaps due to a competing spin-density wave order.

Superconductivity and crystalline electric field effects in the filled skutterudite series Pr(Os$_{1-x}$Ru$_x$)$_4$Sb$_{12}$

X-ray powder diffraction, magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$, and electrical resistivity $ρ(T)$ measurements were made on single crystals of the filled skutterudite series Pr(Os$_{1-x}$Ru$_x$)$_4$Sb$_{12}$. One end of the series ($x = 0$) is a heavy fermion superconductor with a superconducting critical temperature $T_{c} = 1.85$ K, while the other end ($x = 1$) is a conventional superconductor with $T_{c} \approx 1$ K. The lattice constant $a$ decreases approximately linearly with increasing Ru concentration $x$. As Ru (Os) is substituted for Os (Ru), $T_{c}$ decreases nearly linearly with substituent concentration and exhibits a minimum with a value of $T_{c} = 0.75$ K at $x = 0.6$, suggesting that the two types of superconductivity compete with one another. Crystalline electric field (CEF) effects in $χ_\mathrm{dc}(T)$ and $ρ(T)$ due to the splitting of the Pr$^{3+}$ nine-fold degenerate Hund's rule $J = 4$ multiplet are observed throughout the series, with the splitting between the ground state and the first excited state increasing monotonically as $x$ increases. The fits to the $χ_\mathrm{dc}(T)$ and $ρ(T)$ data are consistent with a $Γ_{3}$ doublet ground state for all values of x, although reasonable fits can be obtained for a $Γ_{1}$ ground state for $x$ values near the end member compounds ($x = 0$ or $x = 1$).

Electrical resistivity and magnetization measurements on the heavy fermion superconductor PrOs4Sb12

The filled skutterudite compound PrOs4Sb12, the first example of a Pr-based heavy fermion superconductor, displays superconductivity with $T_c\sim 1.85$ K and has an effective mass $m^* \sim$ {50 $m_e$}, where $m_e$ is the free electron mass. For magnetic fields above 4.5 T, sharp features in the normal state electrical resistivity, magnetization, specific heat, and thermal expansion data suggest the occurrence of a phase transition at high fields. This high field ordered phase in the normal state may originate from a combination of crystalline electric field enhanced Zeeman splitting and quadrupolar ordering. We present an investigation of the electrical resistivity and magnetization of PrOs4Sb12 as a function of temperature between {350 mK} and {3.5 K} and magnetic field up to {18 T}. The data reveal a detailed phase boundary of the high field ordered phase as well as the lower critical field $H_{c1}$ and the onset field of the peak effect in the superconducting state of PrOs4Sb12.

A new heavy fermion superconductor: the filled skutterudite compound PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$

The filled skutterudite compound \PrOsSb{} exhibits superconductivity below a critical temperature $T_\mathrm{c} = 1.85$ K that develops out of a nonmagnetic heavy Fermi liquid with an effective mass $m^{*} \approx 50 m_\mathrm{e}$, where $m_\mathrm{e}$ is the free electron mass. Analysis of magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, electrical resistivity and inelastic neutron scattering measurements within the context of a cubic crystalline electric field yields a Pr$^{3+}$ energy level scheme that consists of a $Γ_{3}$ nonmagnetic doublet ground state that carries an electric quadrupole moment, a low lying $Γ_{5}$ triplet excited state at $\sim 10$ K, and $Γ_{4}$ triplet and $Γ_{1}$ singlet excited states at much higher temperatures. The superconducting state appears to be unconventional and to consist of two distinct superconducting phases. An ordered phase of magnetic or quadrupolar origin occurs at high fields and low temperatures, suggesting that the superconductivity may occur in the vicinity of a magnetic or electric quadrupolar quantum critical point.

The current experimental situation regarding the heavy fermion state, the superconducting state, and a high field, low temperature phase that is apparently associated with magnetic or quadrupolar order in \PrOsSb{} is briefly reviewed herein.

Superconductivity and the high field ordered phase in the heavy fermion compound PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$

Superconductivity is observed in the filled skutterudite compound \PrOsSb{} below a critical temperature temperature $T_\mathrm{c} = 1.85$ K and appears to develop out of a nonmagnetic heavy Fermi liquid with an effective mass $m^{*} \approx 50 m_\mathrm{e}$, where $m_\mathrm{e}$ is the free electron mass. Features associated with a cubic crystalline electric field are present in magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, electrical resistivity, and inelastic neutron scattering measurements, yielding a Pr$^{3+}$ energy level scheme consisting of a $Γ_{3}$ nonmagnetic doublet ground state, a low lying $Γ_{5}$ triplet excitied state at $\sim 10$ K, and much higher temperature $Γ_{4}$ triplet and $Γ_{1}$ singlet excited states. Measurements also indicate that the superconducting state is unconventional and consists of two distinct superconducting phases. At high fields and low temperatures, an ordered phase of magnetic or quadrupolar origin is observed, suggesting that the superconductivity may occur in the vicinity of a magnetic or quadrupolar quantum critical point.
