Search for gamma-ray spectral lines from dark matter annihilation with the H.E.S.S. Inner Galaxy Survey

Spectral gamma-ray line features are expected as key signatures from dark matter (DM) annihilations of TeV-scale particle DM. Observations of the Galactic Centre with atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes are unique to probe thermal-relic TeV particle DM, well beyond the reach of direct detection and collider searches. We report here on the search for line signals in very-high-energy gamma rays using data from the Inner Galaxy Survey, consisting of 546 hours of H.E.S.S. observations of the inner few degrees of the Galactic Centre. No significant signal is detected. We then compute the exclusion limits on the annihilation line cross section $\langle \sigma v \rangle_{\rm line}$, with a two-dimensional log-likelihood ratio test statistics, exploiting spectral and spatial features of the DM signal. Assuming an Einasto DM density profile for the Milky Way, our results provide the most constraining limits so far, reaching $\langle \sigma v \rangle_{\rm line} = 2.3$ $\times$ $10^{-28}$ and $2.4 \times$ $10^{-27}$ cm$^3$s$^{-1}$ for DM masses of 1 and 10 TeV, respectively. The present limits are used to constrain the widely searched Wino, Higgsino and Quintuplet models. For the first time, thermal Higgsino DM is probed for DM Milky Way models.

Gamma-Ray Constraints on Heavy Axion-Like-Particle Decays from Fermi-LAT and H.E.S.S. Blazar Spectra

The propagation of very-high-energy (VHE; $E_{\gamma} \geq 100$ GeV) gamma rays from extragalactic sources is affected by interactions with photons of the extragalactic background light (EBL), resulting in pair production that attenuates the intrinsic gamma-ray flux. This interaction renders the Universe increasingly opaque to VHE photons at high energies and redshifts. New physics scenarios involving axion-like particles (ALPs) could modify this expected optical depth. In particular, ALPs with masses $m_a \sim 10$ eV can decay into two photons over cosmological timescales, thereby contributing to the diffuse EBL. If such ALPs constitute a significant fraction of the dark matter density, their decay would enhance the EBL intensity and consequently increase the gamma-ray optical depth. In this study, we investigate this scenario using a large sample of gamma-ray spectra observed with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) and the Fermi Large Area Telescope. We model the contribution of decaying ALPs to the EBL and assess their impact on the spectra of blazars across redshifts. By comparing these observations with standard EBL models, we place constraints on the properties of heavy ALPs, specifically their mass and photon coupling, and evaluate their viability as a dark matter candidate capable of modifying the gamma-ray transparency of the Universe. From the combined analysis, and under the assumption that ALPs constitute the entire dark matter density, we derive 95% confidence exclusion limits on the photon-ALP coupling down to $g_{a\gamma} \sim 7 \times 10^{-12}$ GeV$^{-1}$ for masses $m_a\sim 15$ eV. These constraints are competitive with existing astrophysical bounds and provide complementary sensitivity to other techniques, closing a previously unconstrained region of parameter space in the $m_a \sim 2.5$-$20$ eV range.

Search for long-term variability of HESS J1745-290

At the center of our Galaxy lies the bright {\gamma}-ray point-like source HESS J1745-290, which is compatible in position with Sgr A star, although an association between the two remains uncertain. Using data obtained between 2004 and 2019 with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) on the Galactic center region, we studied the variability of HESS J1745-290 over 353 hours of observations collected over 16 years, representing the largest dataset gathered yet on this region at TeV energies. We performed a 3D maximum-likelihood analysis of the central source and the diffuse {\gamma}-ray emission in the Galactic center region. This analysis allowed us to extract the spectral and morphological intrinsic behavior of the two components. By performing this analysis on an annual basis, we derived the light curve of HESS J1745-290 and the diffuse emission over the past 16 years. The 3D maximum-likelihood analysis method allowed us to separate the central source from the overlapping diffuse emission, enabling a recalibration of the former by the latter and alleviating some of the systematic effects. We find no long-term or yearly variability. We also provide an estimate of the sensitivity of H.E.S.S. to variation of this specific source over 16 years. We rule out any yearly gamma-ray flux variation of this source larger than 30 percent, as well as any linear flux variation exceeding 30% over this time period.

Fourier transform method for imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes

We propose Fourier transform (FT) method for processing images of extensive air showers (EAS) detected by imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACT) used in the very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray astronomy. The method is based on the discrete Fourier transforms (DFT) on compact Lie groups, and the use of continuous extension of the inverse discrete transforms to approximate the discrete EAS images by continuous EAS brightness distribution functions. Here we describe the FT-method in case of SU(3) group. It allows practical realization of the DFT technique for functions sampled on hexagonal symmetry grids. The proposed method can also be implemented in case of IACT cameras with grids of rectangular symmetry by using the DFT on the SU(2)xSU(2) group. The proposed FT-method is applied to the Monte-Carlo simulated bank of TeV proton and gamma-ray EAS images for a stand-alone telescope. Comparing between the FT-method and the currently used standard method shows that the FT technique allows a better and systematic enhancement of the gamma-ray signal. The relative difference between these two methods becomes more profound especially for `photon poor' images. It suggests that the EAS detection thresholds of IACTs could be effectively reduced with the use of FT technique. This prediction is further supported by a significant noise suppression capability of the method using simple low-pass filters in the image frequency domain. The FT-method allows very deep `tail' (and `height') image cuts, differentiation of images, operations in the image frequency domain, etc., that can be used for development of new effective parameters for the EAS image processing.

Black Holes and Five-brane Thermodynamics

The phase diagram for Dp-branes in M-theory compactified on $T^4$, $T^4/Z_2$, $T^5$, and $T^6$ is constructed. As for the lower-dimensional tori considered in our previous work (hep-th/9810224), the black brane phase at high entropy connects onto matrix theory at low entropy; we thus recover all known instances of matrix theory as consequences of the Maldacena conjecture. The difficulties that arise for $T^6$ are reviewed. We also analyze the D1-D5 system on $T^5$; we exhibit its relation to matrix models of M5-branes, and use spectral flow as a tool to investigate the dependence of the phase structure on angular momentum.

Black holes and thermodynamics of non-gravitational theories

This is a thesis/review article that combines some of the results of hep-th/9809061, hep-th/9810224 and hep-th/9901135 with a short discussion of introductory background material; an attempt has been made to present the work in a self-contained manner. The first chapter mostly targets readers who are vaguely familiar with traditional and contemporary string theory. Chapter two discusses in detail the thermodynamics of the 0+1 dimensional Super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory as an illustrative example of the main ideas of the work. The third chapter outlines the phase structures of p+1 dimensional SYM theories on tori for 1<=p<=5, and that of the D1D5 system; we avoid presenting the technical details of the construction of these phase diagrams, focusing instead on the physics of the final results. The last chapter discusses the dynamics of the formation of boosted black holes in strongly coupled SYM theory.

Black Holes and the Super Yang-Mills diagram. II

The complete phase diagram of objects in M-theory compactified on tori $T^p$, $p=1,2,3$, is elaborated. Phase transitions occur when the object localizes on cycle(s) (the Gregory-Laflamme transition), or when the area of the localized part of the horizon becomes one in string units (the Horowitz-Polchinski correspondence point). The low-energy, near-horizon geometry that governs a given phase can match onto a variety of asymptotic regimes. The analysis makes it clear that the matrix conjecture is a special case of the Maldacena conjecture.

Search for gamma-ray bursts above 20 TeV with the HEGRA AIROBICC Cherenkov array

A search for gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) above 20 TeV within the field of view (1 sr) of the HEGRA AIROBICC Cherenkov array (29N, 18W, 2200 m a.s.l.) has been performed using data taken between March 1992 and March 1993. The search is based on an all-sky survey using four time scales, 10 seconds, 1 minute, 4 minutes and 1 hour. No evidence for TeV-emission has been found for the data sample. Flux upper limits are given. A special analysis has been performed for GRBs detected by BATSE and WATCH. Two partially and two fully contained GRBs in our field of view (FOV) were studied. For GRB 920925c which was fully contained in our FOV, the most significant excess has a probability of 7.7 10**-8 (corresponding to 5.4 sigmas) of being caused by a background fluctuation. Correcting this probability with the appropriate trial factor, yields a 99.7% confidence level for this excess to be related to the GRB (corresponding to 2.7 sigmas). This result is discussed within the framework of the WATCH detection.
