A hole spin resilient to dipole-induced thermal effects

Recent advances in scaling up spin-based quantum processors have revealed unanticipated issues related to thermal effects. Microwave pulses required to manipulate and read the qubits are found to overheat the spins environment, which unexpectedly induces Larmor frequency shifts, reducing thereby gate fidelities. In this study, we shine light on these elusive thermal effects, by experimentally characterizing the temperature dependence of the Larmor frequency for a single hole spin in silicon. Our results unambiguously reveal an electrical origin underlying the thermal susceptibility, stemming from the spin-orbit-induced electric susceptibility. We perform an accurate modeling of the spin electrostatic environment and gyromagnetic properties, allowing us to pinpoint electric dipoles which unfreeze as the temperature increases, as responsible for these frequency shifts. Surprisingly, we find that the thermal susceptibility can be tuned with the magnetic field angle and can even cancel out, unveiling a sweet spot where the hole spin is rendered immune to thermal effects. These findings reveal the microscopic origin of longitudinal thermal susceptibility, providing key insight for the design of thermally robust semiconductor qubits.

A single hole spin with enhanced coherence in natural silicon

Semiconductor spin qubits based on spin-orbit states are responsive to electric field excitation allowing for practical, fast and potentially scalable qubit control. Spin-electric susceptibility, however, renders these qubits generally vulnerable to electrical noise, which limits their coherence time. Here we report on a spin-orbit qubit consisting of a single hole electrostatically confined in a natural silicon metal-oxide-semiconductor device. By varying the magnetic field orientation, we reveal the existence of operation sweet spots where the impact of charge noise is minimized while preserving an efficient electric-dipole spin control. We correspondingly observe an extension of the Hahn-echo coherence time up to 88 $μ$s, exceeding by an order of magnitude the best reported values for hole-spin qubits, and approaching the state-of-the-art for electron spin qubits with synthetic spin-orbit coupling in isotopically-purified silicon. This finding largely enhances the prospects of silicon-based hole spin qubits for scalable quantum information processing.

Multiplexed Readout of Transmon Qubits with Josephson Bifurcation Amplifiers

Achieving individual qubit readout is a major challenge in the development of scalable superconducting quantum processors. We have implemented the multiplexed readout of a four transmon qubit circuit using non-linear resonators operated as Josephson bifurcation amplifiers. We demonstrate the simultaneous measurement of Rabi oscillations of the four transmons. We find that multiplexed Josephson bifurcation is a high-fidelity readout method, the scalability of which is not limited by the need of a large bandwidth nearly quantum-limited amplifier as is the case with linear readout resonators.

High-gain weakly nonlinear flux-modulated Josephson parametric amplifier using a SQUID-array

We have developed and measured a high-gain quantum-limited microwave parametric amplifier based on a superconducting lumped LC resonator with the inductor L including an array of 8 superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs). This amplifier is parametrically pumped by modulating the flux threading the SQUIDs at twice the resonator frequency. Around 5 GHz, a maximum gain of 31 dB, a product amplitude-gain x bandwidth above 60 MHz, and a 1 dB compression point of -123 dBm at 20 dB gain are obtained in the non-degenerate mode of operation. Phase sensitive amplification-deamplification is also measured in the degenerate mode and yields a maximum gain of 37 dB. The compression point obtained is 18 dB above what would be obtained with a single SQUID of the same inductance, due to the smaller nonlinearity of the SQUID array.

Demonstrating quantum speed-up in a superconducting two-qubit processor

We operate a superconducting quantum processor consisting of two tunable transmon qubits coupled by a swapping interaction, and equipped with non destructive single-shot readout of the two qubits. With this processor, we run the Grover search algorithm among four objects and find that the correct answer is retrieved after a single run with a success probability between 0.52 and 0.67, significantly larger than the 0.25 achieved with a classical algorithm. This constitutes a proof-of-concept for the quantum speed-up of electrical quantum processors.

Characterization of a two-transmon processor with individual single-shot qubit readout

We report the characterization of a two-qubit processor implemented with two capacitively coupled tunable superconducting qubits of the transmon type, each qubit having its own non-destructive single-shot readout. The fixed capacitive coupling yields the \sqrt{iSWAP} two-qubit gate for a suitable interaction time. We reconstruct by state tomography the coherent dynamics of the two-bit register as a function of the interaction time, observe a violation of the Bell inequality by 22 standard deviations after correcting readout errors, and measure by quantum process tomography a gate fidelity of 90%.

Coupling a quantum dot, fermionic leads and a microwave cavity on-chip

We demonstrate a hybrid architecture consisting of a quantum dot circuit coupled to a single mode of the electromagnetic field. We use single wall carbon nanotube based circuits inserted in superconducting microwave cavities. By probing the nanotube-dot using a dispersive read-out in the Coulomb blockade and the Kondo regime, we determine an electron-photon coupling strength which should enable circuit QED experiments with more complex quantum dot circuits.

Enrichments over symmetric Picard categories

Categorical rings were introduced by Jibladze and Pirashvili in their paper "Third Mac Lane cohomology via categorical rings", Journal of Homotopy and related structures, 2, 2007, 187-216. We call those "2-rings". In these notes we present basic definitions and results regarding 2-modules. This is work in progress.

Notes on enriched categories with colimits of some class (completed version)

The paper is in essence a survey of categories having $ϕ$-weighted colimits for all the weights $ϕ$ in some class $Φ$. We introduce the class $Φ^+$ of {\em $Φ$-flat} weights which are those $ψ$ for which $ψ$-colimits commute in the base $\V$ with limits having weights in $Φ$; and the class $Φ^-$ of {\em $Φ$-atomic} weights, which are those $ψ$ for which $ψ$-limits commute in the base $\V$ with colimits having weights in $Φ$. We show that both these classes are {\em saturated} (that is, what was called {\em closed} in the terminology of \cite{AK88}). We prove that for the class $\p$ of {\em all} weights, the classes $\p^+$ and $\p^-$ both coincide with the class $\Q$ of {\em absolute} weights. For any class $Φ$ and any category $\A$, we have the free $Φ$-cocompletion $Φ(\A)$ of $\A$; and we recognize $\Q(\A)$ as the Cauchy-completion of $\A$. We study the equivalence between ${(\Q(\A^{op}))}^{op}$ and $\Q(\A)$, which we exhibit as the restriction of the Isbell adjunction between ${[\A,\V]}^{op}$ and $[\A^{op},\V]$ when $\A$ is small; and we give a new Morita theorem for any class $Φ$ containing $\Q$. We end with the study of $Φ$-continuous weights and their relation to the $Φ$-flat weights.

Notes on enriched categories with colimits of some class

Given a class Phi of weights, we study the following classes: Phi^+ of Phi-flat weights which are the psi for which psi-colimits commute in the base V with limits with weights in Phi; and Phi^-, dually defined, of weights psi for which psi-limits commute in the base V with colimits with weights in Phi. We show that both these classes are saturated (i.e. closed under the terminology of Albert-Kelly or Betti's coverings). We prove that for the class P of all weights P^+ = P^-. For any small B, we defined an enriched adjunction a` la Isbell [B,V]^op -> [B^op,V] and show how it restricts to an equivalence (P^-(B^op))^op ~ P^-(B) between subcategories of small projectives.
