Representation Theory of Lattice Current Algebras

Lattice current algebras were introduced as a regularization of the left- and right moving degrees of freedom in the WZNW model. They provide examples of lattice theories with a local quantum symmetry $U_q(\sg)$. Their representation theory is studied in detail. In particular, we construct all irreducible representations along with a lattice analogue of the fusion product for representations of the lattice current algebra. It is shown that for an arbitrary number of lattice sites, the representation categories of the lattice current algebras agree with their continuum counterparts.

Vertex Operators - From a Toy Model to Lattice Algebras

Within the framework of the discrete Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten theory we analyze the structure of vertex operators on a lattice. In particular, the lattice analogues of operator product expansions and braid relations are discussed. As the main physical application, a rigorous construction for the discrete counterpart g_n of the group valued field g(x) is provided. We study several automorphisms of the lattice algebras including discretizations of the evolution in the WZNW model. Our analysis is based on the theory of modular Hopf algebras and its formulation in terms of universal elements. Algebras of vertex operators and their structure constants are obtained for the deformed universal enveloping algebras U_q(G). Throughout the whole paper, the abelian WZNW model is used as a simple example to illustrate the steps of our construction.

Representation Theory of Chern Simons Observables

Recently we suggested a new quantum algebra, the moduli algebra, which was conjectured to be a quantum algebra of observables of the Hamiltonian Chern Simons theory. This algebra provides the quantization of the algebra of functions on the moduli space of flat connections on a 2-dimensional surface. In this paper we classify unitary representations of this new algebra and identify the corresponding representation spaces with the spaces of conformal blocks of the WZW model. The mapping class group of the surface is proved to act on the moduli algebra by inner automorphisms. The generators of these automorphisms are unitary elements of the moduli algebra. They are constructed explicitly and proved to satisfy the relations of the (unique) central extension of the mapping class group.

Combinatorial Quantization of the Hamiltonian Chern-Simons Theory II

This paper further develops the combinatorial approach to quantization of the Hamiltonian Chern Simons theory advertised in \cite{AGS}. Using the theory of quantum Wilson lines, we show how the Verlinde algebra appears within the context of quantum group gauge theory. This allows to discuss flatness of quantum connections so that we can give a mathe- matically rigorous definition of the algebra of observables $\A_{CS}$ of the Chern Simons model. It is a *-algebra of ``functions on the quantum moduli space of flat connections'' and comes equipped with a positive functional $ω$ (``integration''). We prove that this data does not depend on the particular choices which have been made in the construction. Following ideas of Fock and Rosly \cite{FoRo}, the algebra $\A_{CS}$ provides a deformation quantization of the algebra of functions on the moduli space along the natural Poisson bracket induced by the Chern Simons action. We evaluate a volume of the quantized moduli space and prove that it coincides with the Verlinde number. This answer is also interpreted as a partition partition function of the lattice Yang-Mills theory corresponding to a quantum gauge group.

Combinatorial quantization of the Hamiltonian Chern-Simons theory I

Motivated by a recent paper of Fock and Rosly \cite{FoRo} we describe a mathematically precise quantization of the Hamiltonian Chern-Simons theory. We introduce the Chern-Simons theory on the lattice which is expected to reproduce the results of the continuous theory exactly. The lattice model enjoys the symmetry with respect to a quantum gauge group. Using this fact we construct the algebra of observables of the Hamiltonian Chern-Simons theory equipped with a *-operation and a positive inner product.

Models of Quantum Space Time: Quantum Field Planes

Quantum field planes furnish a noncommutative differential algebra $Ω$ which substitutes for the commutative algebra of functions and forms on a contractible manifold. The data required in their construction come from a quantum field theory. The basic idea is to replace the ground field ${\bf C}$ of quantum planes by the noncommutative algebra ${\cal A}$ of observables of the quantum field theory.
