Projection operator based expansion of the evolution operator

The not necessarily unitary evolution operator of a finite dimensional quantum system is studied with the help of a projection operators technique. Applying this approach to the Schrödinger equation allows the derivation of an alternative expression for the evolution operator, which differs from the traditional chronological exponent. An appropriate choice of projection operators results in the possibility of studying the diagonal and non-diagonal elements of the evolution operator separately. The suggested expression implies a particular form of perturbation expansion, which leads to a new formula for the short time dynamics. The new kind of perturbation expansion can be used to improve the accuracy of the usual chronological exponent significantly. The evolution operator for any arbitrary time can be efficiently recovered using the semigroup properties. The method is illustrated by two examples, namely the dynamics of a three-level system in two nonresonant laser fields and the calculation of the partition function of a finite XY-spin chain.

Stochastic wave-function unravelling of the generalized Lindblad equation

We investigate generalized non-Markovian stochastic Schroeodinger equations (SSEs), driven by a multidimensional counting process and multidimensional Brownian motion introduced by A. Barchielli and C. Pellegrini [J. Math. Phys. 51, 112104 (2010)]. We show, that these SSEs can be translated in a non-linear form, which can be efficiently simulated. The simulation is illustrated by the model of a two-level system in a structured bath and the results of the simulations are compared with the exact solution of the generalized master equation.

Initial correlation in a system of a spin coupled to a spin bath through an intermediate spin

The strong system-bath correlation is a typical initial condition in many condensed matter and some quantum optical systems. Here, the dynamics of a spin interacting with a spin bath through an intermediate spin are studied. Initial correlations between the spin and the intermediate spin are taken into account. The exact analytical expression for the evolution operator of the spin is found. Furthermore, correlated projection superoperator techniques are applied to the model and a time-convolutionless master equation to second order is derived. It is shown that the time-convolutionless master equation to second order reproduces the exact dynamics for time-scales of the order 1/γ, where γ is the coupling of the central spin to the intermediate spin. It is found that there is a strong dependence on the initial system-bath correlations in the dynamics of the reduced system, which cannot be neglected.

Stochastic Schrödinger Equations for Markovian and non-Markovian cases

Firstly, the Markovian stochastic Schrödinger equations are presented, together with their connections with the theory of measurements in continuous time. Moreover, the stochastic evolution equations are translated into a simulation algorithm, which is illustrated by two concrete examples - the damped harmonic oscillator and a two-level atom with homodyne photodetection. Then, we consider how to introduce memory effects in the stochastic Schrödinger equation via coloured noise. Specifically, the approach by using the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process is illustrated and a simulation for the non-Markovian process proposed. Finally, an analytical approximation technique is tested with the help of the stochastic simulation in a model of a dissipative qubit.
