Constraints on millicharged particles with low threshold germanium detectors at Kuo-Sheng Reactor Neutrino Laboratory

Relativistic millicharged particles ($χ_q$) have been proposed in various extensions to the Standard Model of particle physics. We consider the scenarios where they are produced at nuclear reactor core and via interactions of cosmic-rays with the earth's atmosphere. Millicharged particles could also be candidates for dark matter, and become relativistic through acceleration by supernova explosion shock waves. The atomic ionization cross section of $χ_q$ with matter are derived with the equivalent photon approximation. Smoking-gun signatures with significant enhancement in the differential cross section are identified. New limits on the mass and charge of $χ_q$ are derived, using data taken with a point-contact germanium detector with 500g mass functioning at an energy threshold of 300~eV at the Kuo-Sheng Reactor Neutrino Laboratory.

Performances of a prototype point-contact germanium detector immersed in liquid nitrogen for light dark matter search

The CDEX-10 experiment searches for light weakly-interacting massive particles, a form of dark matter, at the China JinPing underground laboratory, where approximately 10 kg of germanium detectors are arranged in an array and immersed in liquid nitrogen. Herein, we report on the experimental apparatus, detector characterization, and spectrum analysis of one prototype detector. Owing to the higher rise-time resolution of the CDEX-10 prototype detector as compared with CDEX-1B, we identified the origin of an observed category of extremely fast events. For data analysis of the CDEX-10 prototype, we introduced and applied an improved bulk/surface event discrimination method. The results of the new method were compared to those of the CDEX-1B spectrum. Both sets of results showed good consistency in the 0--12 keVee energy range, except for the 8.0 keV K-shell X-ray peak from the external copper.

Neutron background measurements with a hybrid neutron detector at the Kuo-Sheng Reactor Neutrino Laboratory

We report in situ neutron background measurements at the Kuo-Sheng Reactor Neutrino Laboratory (KSNL) by a hybrid neutron detector (HND) with a data size of 33.8 days under identical shielding configurations as during the neutrino physics data taking. The HND consists of BC-501A liquid and BC-702 phosphor powder scintillation neutron detectors, which is sensitive to both fast and thermal neutrons, respectively. Neutron-induced events for the two channels are identified and differentiated by pulse shape analysis, such that background of both are simultaneously measured. The fast neutron fluxes are derived by an iterative unfolding algorithm. Neutron induced background in the germanium detector under the same fluxes, both due to cosmic-rays and ambient radioactivity, are derived and compared with the measurements. The results are valuable to background understanding of the neutrino data at the KSNL. In particular, neutron-induced background events due to ambient radioactivity as well as from reactor operation are negligible compared to intrinsic cosmogenic activity and ambient $γ$-activity. The detector concept and analysis procedures are applicable to neutron background characterization in similar rare-event experiments.

Limits on light WIMPs with a 1 kg-scale germanium detector at 160 eVee physics threshold at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory

We report results of a search for light weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matter from the CDEX-1 experiment at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL). Constraints on WIMP-nucleon spin-independent (SI) and spin-dependent (SD) couplings are derived with a physics threshold of 160 eVee, from an exposure of 737.1 kg-days. The SI and SD limits extend the lower reach of light WIMPs to 2 GeV and improve over our earlier bounds at WIMP mass less than 6 GeV.

Limits on Light Weakly Interacting Massive Particles from the First 102.8 kg ${\times}$ day Data of the CDEX-10 Experiment

We report the first results of a light weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) search from the CDEX-10 experiment with a 10 kg germanium detector array immersed in liquid nitrogen at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory with a physics data size of 102.8 kg day. At an analysis threshold of 160 eVee, improved limits of 8 $\times 10^{-42}$ and 3 $\times 10^{-36}$ cm$^{2}$ at a 90\% confidence level on spin-independent and spin-dependent WIMP-nucleon cross sections, respectively, at a WIMP mass ($m_χ$) of 5 GeV/${c}^2$ are achieved. The lower reach of $m_χ$ is extended to 2 GeV/${c}^2$.

Bulk and Surface Event Identification in p-type Germanium Detectors

The p-type point-contact germanium detectors have been adopted for light dark matter WIMP searches and the studies of low energy neutrino physics. These detectors exhibit anomalous behavior to events located at the surface layer. The previous spectral shape method to identify these surface events from the bulk signals relies on spectral shape assumptions and the use of external calibration sources. We report an improved method in separating them by taking the ratios among different categories of in situ event samples as calibration sources. Data from CDEX-1 and TEXONO experiments are re-examined using the ratio method. Results are shown to be consistent with the spectral shape method.

Interatomic Coulombic decay in helium nanodroplets

Interatomic Coulombic decay (ICD) is induced in helium (He) nanodroplets by photoexciting the n=2 excited state of He^+ using XUV synchrotron radiation. By recording multiple coincidence electron and ion images we find that ICD occurs in various locations at the droplet surface, inside the surface region, or in the droplet interior. ICD at the surface gives rise to energetic He^+ ions as previously observed for free He dimers. ICD deeper inside leads to the ejection of slow He^+ ions due to Coulomb explosion delayed by elastic collisions with neighboring He atoms, and to the formation of He_k^+ complexes.

A tale of two transients: GW170104 and GRB170105A

We present multi-wavelength follow-up campaigns by the AstroSat-CZTI and GROWTH collaborations to search for an electromagnetic counterpart to the gravitational wave event GW170104. At the time of the GW170104 trigger, the AstroSat CZTI field-of-view covered 50.3\% of the sky localization. We do not detect any hard X-ray (>100 keV) signal at this time, and place an upper limit of $\approx 4.5 \times 10^{-7}~{\rm erg~cm}^{-2}{\rm~s}^{-1}$ for a 1\,s timescale. Separately, the ATLAS survey reported a rapidly fading optical source dubbed ATLAS17aeu in the error circle of GW170104. Our panchromatic investigation of ATLAS17aeu shows that it is the afterglow of an unrelated long, soft GRB~170105A, with only a fortuitous spatial coincidence with GW170104. We then discuss the properties of this transient in the context of standard long GRB afterglow models.

Design and Performance of a Hybrid Fast and Thermal Neutron Detector

We report the performance and characterization of a custom-built hybrid detector consisting of BC501A liquid scintillator for fast neutrons and BC702 scintillator for thermal neutrons. The calibration and the resolution of the BC501A liquid scintillator detector are performed. The event identification via Pulse Shape Discrimination (PSD) technique is developed in order to distinguish gamma, fast and thermal neutrons. Monte Carlo simulation packages are developed in GEANT4 to obtain actual neutron energy spectrum from the measured recoil spectrum. The developed methods are tested by reconstruction of 241AmBe(α, n) neutron spectrum.

Constraints on Axion couplings from the CDEX-1 experiment at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory

We report the results of searches for solar axions and galactic dark matter axions or axion-like particles with CDEX-1 experiment at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory, using 335.6 kg-days of data from a p-type point-contact germanium detector. The data are compatible with the background model and no excess signals are observed. Limits of solar axions on the model independent coupling $g_{Ae}<2.5\times10^{-11}$ from Compton, bremsstrahlung, atomic-recombination and deexcitation channel and $g^{\text{eff}}_{AN}\times g_{Ae}<6.1\times10^{-17}$ from $^{57}$Fe M1 transition at 90 % confidence level are derived. Within the framework of the DFSZ and KSVZ models, our results exclude the axion mass heavier than 0.9 eV/c$^{2}$ and 173 eV/c$^{2}$, respectively. The derived constraints for dark matter axions below 1 keV improves over the previous results.

Characterization and Performance of Germanium Detectors with sub-keV Sensitivities for Neutrino and Dark Matter Experiments

Germanium ionization detectors with sensitivities as low as 100 eVee (electron-equivalent energy) open new windows for studies on neutrino and dark matter physics. The relevant physics subjects are summarized. The detectors have to measure physics signals whose amplitude is comparable to that of pedestal electronic noise. To fully exploit this new detector technique, various experimental issues including quenching factors, energy reconstruction and calibration, signal triggering and selection as well as evaluation of their associated efficiencies have to be attended. The efforts and results of a research program to address these challenges are presented.

Coherency in Neutrino-Nucleus Elastic Scattering

Neutrino-nucleus elastic scattering provides a unique laboratory to study the quantum mechanical coherency effects in electroweak interactions, towards which several experimental programs are being actively pursued. We report results of our quantitative studies on the transitions towards decoherency. A parameter ($α$) is identified to describe the degree of coherency, and its variations with incoming neutrino energy, detector threshold and target nucleus are studied. The ranges of $α$ which can be probed with realistic neutrino experiments are derived, indicating complementarity between projects with different sources and targets. Uncertainties in nuclear physics and in $α$ would constrain sensitivities in probing physics beyond the standard model. The maximum neutrino energies corresponding to $α$>0.95 are derived.

A Search of Low-Mass WIMPs with p-type Point Contact Germanium Detector in the CDEX-1 Experiment

The CDEX-1 experiment conducted a search of low-mass (< 10 GeV/c2) Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) dark matter at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory using a p-type point-contact germanium detector with a fiducial mass of 915 g at a physics analysis threshold of 475 eVee. We report the hardware set-up, detector characterization, data acquisition and analysis procedures of this experiment. No excess of unidentified events are observed after subtraction of known background. Using 335.6 kg-days of data, exclusion constraints on the WIMP-nucleon spin-independent and spin-dependent couplings are derived.

Maximization of Extractable Randomness in a Quantum Random-Number Generator

The generation of random numbers via quantum processes is an efficient and reliable method to obtain true indeterministic random numbers that are of vital importance to cryptographic communication and large-scale computer modeling. However, in realistic scenarios, the raw output of a quantum random-number generator is inevitably tainted by classical technical noise. The integrity of the device can be compromised if this noise is tampered with, or even controlled by some malicious party. To safeguard against this, we propose and experimentally demonstrate an approach that produces side-information independent randomness that is quantified by min-entropy conditioned on this classical noise. We present a method for maximizing the conditional min-entropy of the number sequence generated from a given quantum-to-classical-noise ratio. The detected photocurrent in our experiment is shown to have a real-time random-number generation rate of 14 (Mbit/s)/MHz. The spectral response of the detection system shows the potential to deliver more than 70 Gbit/s of random numbers in our experimental setup.

Evolution of dopant-induced helium nanoplasmas

Two-component nanoplasmas generated by strong-field ionization of doped helium nanodroplets are studied in a pump-probe experiment using few-cycle laser pulses in combination with molecular dynamics simulations. High yields of helium ions and a pronounced, droplet size-dependent resonance structure in the pump-probe transients reveal the evolution of the dopant-induced helium nanoplasma. The pump-probe dynamics is interpreted in terms of strong inner ionization by the pump pulse and resonant heating by the probe pulse which controls the final charge states detected via the frustration of electron-ion recombination.

Dopant induced ignition of helium nanodroplets in intense few-cycle laser pulses

We demonstrate ultrafast resonant energy absorption of rare-gas doped He nanodroplets from intense few-cycle (~10 fs) laser pulses. We find that less than 10 dopant atoms "ignite" the droplet to generate a non-spherical electronic nanoplasma resulting ultimately in complete ionization and disintegration of all atoms, although the pristine He droplet is transparent for the laser intensities applied. Our calculations at those intensities reveal that the minimal pulse length required for ignition is about 9 fs.
