Asteroid phase curves using sparse Gaia DR2 data and differential dense light curves

The amount of sparse asteroid photometry being gathered by both space- and ground-based surveys is growing exponentially. This large volume of data poses a computational challenge owing to both the large amount of information to be processed and the new methods needed to combine data from different sources (e.g. obtained by different techniques, in different bands, and having different random and systematic errors). The main goal of this work is to develop an algorithm capable of merging sparse and dense data sets, both relative and differential, in preparation for asteroid observations originating from, for example, Gaia, TESS, ATLAS, LSST, K2, VISTA, and many other sources. We present a novel method to obtain asteroid phase curves by combining sparse photometry and differential ground-based photometry. In the traditional approach, the latter cannot be used for phase curves. Merging those two data types allows for the extraction of phase-curve information for a growing number of objects. Our method is validated for 26 sample asteroids observed by the Gaia mission.

Non-local Potts model on random lattice and chromatic number of a plane

Statistical models are widely used for the investigation of complex system's behavior. Most of the models considered in the literature are formulated on regular lattices with nearest-neighbor interactions. The models with non-local interaction kernels have been less studied. In this article, we investigate an example of such a model - the non-local q-color Potts model on a random d=2 lattice. Only the same color spins at a unit distance (within some small margin $\delta$) interact. We study the vacuum states of this model and present the results of numerical simulations and discuss qualitative features of the corresponding patterns. Conjectured relation with the chromatic number of a plane problem is discussed.

Photometry of selected outer main belt asteroids

We present new photometric observations for twelve asteroids ((122) Gerda, (152) Atala, (260) Huberta, (665) Sabine, (692) Hippodamia, (723) Hammonia, (745) Mauritia, (768) Struveana, (863) Benkoela, (1113) Katja, (1175) Margo, (2057) Rosemary) from the outer part of the main belt aimed to obtain the magnitude-phase curves and to verify geometric albedo and taxonomic class based on their magnitude-phase behaviors. The measured magnitude-phase relations confirm previously determined composition types of (260) Huberta (C-type), (692) Hippodamia (S-type) and (1175) Margo (S-type). Asteroids (665) Sabine and (768) Struveana previously classified as X-type show phase-curve behavior typical for moderate-albedo asteroids and may belong to the M-type. The phase-curve of (723) Hammonia is typical for the S-type which contradicts the previously determined C-type. We confirmed the moderate-albedo of asteroids (122) Gerda and (152) Atala, but their phase-curves are different from typical for the S-type and may indicate more rare compositional types. Based on magnitude-phase behaviors and V-R colors, (2057) Rosemary most probably belongs to M-type, while asteroids (745) Mauritia and (1113) Katja belong to S-complex. The phase curve of the A-type asteroid (863) Benkoela does not cover the opposition effect range and further observations are needed to understand typical features of the phase-curves of A-type asteroids in comparison with other types. We have also determined lightcurve amplitudes of the observed asteroids and obtained new or improved values of the rotation periods for most of them.

Finite time measurements by Unruh-DeWitt detector and Landauer's principle

The model of Unruh-DeWitt detector coupled to the scalar field for finite time is studied. A systematic way of computing finite time corrections in various cases is suggested and nonperturbative effects like thermalization are discussed. It is shown in particular that adiabatic switching off the coupling between the detector and the thermal bath leaves non-vanishing corrections to the detector's levels distribution. Considering the two level detector as an information bearing degree of freedom encoding one bit of information, limits on external work for the detector's (de)couling in finite time following from the Landauer's bound are formulated.

Quantum measurements and chiral magnetic effect

The effect of anisotropy for fluctuations of electric currents in magnetic field is addressed within framework of quantum measurements theory. It is shown that for free fermions in uniform magnetic field the anisotropy is of the same sign as one expects for chiral magnetic effect and is related to triangle anomaly. The corresponding decoherence functional contains anomalous off-diagonal terms leading to correlation of fluctuations between observables of opposite P-parity.

Weak Turbulence in the Magnetosphere: Formation of Whistler Wave Cavity by Nonlinear Scattering

We consider the weak turbulence of whistler waves in the in low-β inner magnetosphere of the Earth. Whistler waves with frequencies, originating in the ionosphere, propagate radially outward and can trigger nonlinear induced scattering by thermal electrons provided the wave energy density is large enough. Nonlinear scattering can substantially change the direction of the wave vector of whistler waves and hence the direction of energy flux with only a small change in the frequency. A portion of whistler waves return to the ionosphere with a smaller perpendicular wave vector resulting in diminished linear damping and enhanced ability to pitch-angle scatter trapped electrons. In addition, a portion of the scattered wave packets can be reflected near the ionosphere back into the magnetosphere. Through multiple nonlinear scatterings and ionospheric reflections a long-lived wave cavity containing turbulent whistler waves can be formed with the appropriate properties to efficiently pitch-angle scatter trapped electrons. The primary consequence on the Earth's radiation belts is to reduce the lifetime of the trapped electron population.

Towards a quantum theory of chiral magnetic effect

We discuss three possible ways to address quantum physics behind chiral magnetic effect and electric charge fluctuation patterns in heavy ion collisions. The first one makes use of P-parity violation probed by local order parameters, the second considers CME in quantum measurement theory framework and the third way is to study P-odd * P-odd contributions to P-even observables. In the latter approach relevant form-factor is extracted and computed for weak magnetic field in confinement region and for free quarks in strong field regime. It is shown that the effect is negligible in the former case. We also discuss saturation effect - charge fluctuation asymmetry for free fermions reaches constant value at asymptotically large fields.

Infinite statistics, symmetry breaking and combinatorial hierarchy

The physics of symmetry breaking in theories with strongly interacting quanta obeying infinite (quantum Boltzmann) statistics known as quons is discussed. The picture of Bose/Fermi particles as low energy excitations over nontrivial quon condensate is advocated. Using induced gravity arguments it is demonstrated that the Planck mass in such low energy effective theory can be factorially (in number of degrees of freedom) larger than its true ultraviolet cutoff. Thus, the assumption that statistics of relevant high energy excitations is neither Bose nor Fermi but infinite can remove the hierarchy problem without necessity to introduce any artificially large numbers. Quantum mechanical model illustrating this scenario is presented.

Complementary strategy of New Physics searches in B-sector

We discuss a possible strategy for studies of a particular next-to-minimal flavor violation New Physics (NP) scenario at LHC. Our analysis is based on comparison of particular CKM matrix elements, which can be obtained from the processes dominated by diagrams of different topology (tree, penguin and box). We argue that the standard formalism of the overall unitarity triangle fit is not suitable for searches of the chosen NP. We also stress the importance of lattice computations of some relevant hadronic inputs.

On the pattern of Casimir scaling violation in gluodynamics

Results of lattice analysis indicate that the static potential in SU(3) gauge theory is proportional to eigenvalue of quadratic Casimir operator for the corresponding representation with a good accuracy. We discuss the mechanism of possible deviations from the Casimir scaling in gluodynamics in terms of correlators of path-ordered gauge-invariant operators defined on the worldsheet of the confining string.

Interaction of Wilson loops in confining vacuum

Nonperturbative and perturbative interaction mechanisms of Wilson loops in gluodynamics are studied within the background field formalism. The first one operates when distance between minimal surfaces of the loops is small and may be important for sea quark effects and strong decay processes. The second mechanism -- perturbative interaction in nonperturbative confining background is found to be physically dominant for all loop configurations characteristic of scattering process. It reduces to perturbative gluon exchanges at small distances, while at larger distances it corresponds to the t-channel exchange of (reggeized) glueball states. Comparison to other approaches is made and possible physical applications are discussed.

Operator product expansion and confinement

Operator product expansion technique is analyzed in abelian and nonabelian nonsupersymmetric field theoretical models with confinement. Special attention is paid to the regimes where nonzero virtuality of vacuum fields is felt by external currents. It is stressed that despite physics of confinement is sometimes considered as being caused by "soft" vacuum gluon fields, it can exhibit pronounced "hard" effects in OPE both in coordinate and momentum spaces.
