Characteristics of Compound Multiplicity in 84^Kr_36 with various light and heavy targets at 1 GeV per nucleon

Present article focuses on the interactions of 84 Kr 36 having kinetic energy around 1 GeV per nucleon with NIKFI BR2 nuclear emulsion detectors targets, that can reveal important features of some compound multiplicity. The observation showed that the width of the compound multiplicity distributions and value of the mean compound multiplicity have linear relation with the mass number of the projectile as well as colliding system.

Measurement of the damping of nuclear shell effect in the doubly magic $^{208}$Pb region

The damping of the nuclear shell effect with excitation energy has been measured through an analysis of the neutron spectra following the triton transfer in the $^7$Li induced reaction on $^{205}$Tl. The measured neutron spectra demonstrate the expected large shell correction energy for the nuclei in the vicinity of doubly magic $^{208}$Pb and a small value for $^{184}$W. A quantitative extraction of the allowed values of the damping parameter $γ$, along with those for the asymptotic nuclear level density parameter $\tilde{a}$, has been made for the first time.

Ordinary Percolation with Discontinuous Transitions

Percolation on a one-dimensional lattice and fractals such as the Sierpinski gasket is typically considered to be trivial because they percolate only at full bond density. By dressing up such lattices with small-world bonds, a novel percolation transition with explosive cluster growth can emerge at a nontrivial critical point. There, the usual order parameter, describing the probability of any node to be part of the largest cluster, jumps instantly to a finite value. Here, we provide a simple example of this transition in form of a small-world network consisting of a one-dimensional lattice combined with a hierarchy of long-range bonds that reveals many features of the transition in a mathematically rigorous manner.

Transverse mass spectra and scaling of hadrons at RHIC and LHC energies

We present a systematic study of transverse mass spectra ($m_T$) of mesons and baryons at RHIC and LHC energies. In an earlier study, it was shown that all the mesons produced in p+p and d+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV follow $m_T$ scaling while in Au+Au collisions at same energy the mesons with strange and charm quark contents do not follow $m_T$ scaling which can be attributed to medium modifications. We extend this study for baryons produced in all above colliding systems at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV. Although all available baryon spectra behave differently from mesons but are found to scale with protons for both p+p and d+Au collisions. In case of Au+Au collisions, the strange baryons behave differently from protons. This study has also been performed on the meson spectra in p+p collisions at 62.4 GeV which lies in between the highest RHIC energy and SPS energy where the $m_T$ scaling was first observed and we arrive at same conclusions as those at 200 GeV. We test the $m_T$ scaling at LHC with the first meson spectra measured in p+p collisions at 900 GeV and find that the $m_T$ spectra of kaons and $ϕ$ do not scale with pions. Thus $m_T$ scaling which was working well up to p+p collisions at 200 GeV seems to be broken. Here we use all data measured in the mid rapidity region. Baryon to meson ratio is studied as a function of $m_T$, at different energies and for different systems and is found that this ratio for p+p at 900 GeV is quite different from that in p+p collisions at RHIC energies.

Constraints on Non-Commutative Physics Scale with Neutrino-Electron Scattering

Neutrino-electron scatterings ($ν- e$) are purely leptonic processes with robust Standard Model (SM) predictions. Their measurements can therefore provide constraints to physics beyond SM. Non-commutative (NC) field theories modify space-time commutation relations, and allow neutrino electromagnetic couplings at the tree level. Their contribution to neutrino-electron scattering cross-section was derived. Constraints were placed on the NC scale parameter $Λ_{NC}$ from $ν- e$ experiments with reactor and accelerator neutrinos. The most stringent limit of $Λ_{NC} > 3.3 TeV$ at 95% confidence level improves over the direct bounds from collider experiments.

Magnetic behavior of Ba_{3}Cu_{3}Sc_{4}O_{12}

The chain-like system Ba_{3}Cu_{3}Sc_4O_{12} has potentially interesting magnetic properties due to the presence of Cu^{2+} and a structure-suggested low-dimensionality. We present magnetization M versus magnetic field H and temperature T, T- and H-dependent heat-capacity C_{p}, ^{45}Sc nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), muon spin rotation (μSR), neutron diffraction measurements and electronic structure calculations for Ba_{3}Cu_{3}Sc_{4}O_{12}. The onset of magnetic long-range antiferromagnetic order at T_{N} ~16 K is consistently evidenced from the whole gamut of our data. A significant sensitivity of T_{N} to the applied magnetic field H (T_{N}~0 K for H=70 kOe) is also reported. Coupled with a ferromagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature (θ_{CW}~65 K) in the susceptibility (from a 100 K-300 K fit), it is indicative of competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. These indications are corroborated by our density functional theory based electronic structure calculations where we find the presence of significant ferromagnetic couplings between some copper ions whereas AF couplings were present between some others. Our experimental data, backed by our theoretical calculations, rule out one-dimensional magnetic behaviour suggested by the structure and the observed long-range order is due to the presence of non-negligible magnetic interactions between adjacent as well as next-nearest chains.

Meson spectra and m_T scaling in p+p, d+Au and Au+Au collisions at \sqrtS_NN=200 GeV

The meson spectra provide insight into the particle production mechanism and interaction in the hadronic and quark gluon plasma (QGP) phases. The detailed study of systematics of meson spectra is important also because it acts as ingredient for estimating the hadronic decay backgrounds in the photon, single lepton and dilepton spectra which are the penetrating probes of quark gluon plasma. In this work, we parameterize experimentally measured pion spectra and then obtain the spectra of other light mesons using a property known as $m_T$ scaling. The $m_{T}$ scaled spectra for each meson is compared with experimental data for p+p, d+Au and Au+Au systems at $\surd s_{NN} $ = 200 GeV. The agreement of the $m_{T}$ scaled and experimental data shapes are excellent in most cases and their fitted relative normalization gives ratio of meson to pion $m_T$ spectra. These ratios are useful to obtain the hadronic decay contribution in photonic and leptonic channels but also point to the quantitative changes in the dynamics of the heavy ion collision over p+p collisions. It is shown that, the particles with charm contents behave differently as compared to pions in d+Au systems and particles either with strange or charm contents behave differently from pions in Au+Au systems. For Au+Au system, three centrality classes have been studied which reveal that for the particles like kaon and $ϕ$, peripheral collision data is better reproduced as compared to central and their relative ratios with pions also increase as the collisions become more central.

Emission Characteristics of the Projectile Fragments at Relativistic Energy

A projectile (84^Kr_36) having kinetic energy around 1 A GeV was used to expose NIKFI BR-2 emulsion target. A total of 700 inelastic events are used in the present studies on projectile fragments. The emission angle of the projectile fragments are strongly affected by charge of the other projectile fragments emitted at same time with different emission angle is observed. The angular distribution studies show symmetrical nature for lighter charge projectile fragments. The symmetrical nature decreased with the charge of projectile fragments. At ~4o of emission angle for double charge projectile fragments, the momentum transfer during interaction is similar for various target species of emulsion were observed. We also observed a small but significant amplitude peaks on both side of the big peak for almost all light charge projectile fragments having different delta angle values. It reflects that there are few percent of projectile fragments that are coming from the decay of heavy projectile fragments or any other process.

Two source emission behaviour of alpha fragments of projectile having energy around 1 GeV per nucleon

The emission of projectile fragments alpha has been studied in ^{84}Kr interactions with nuclei of the nuclear emulsion detector composition at relativistic energy below 2 GeV per nucleon. The angular distribution of projectile fragments alpha in terms of transverse momentum could not be explained by a straight and clean-cut collision geometry hypothesis of Participant - Spectator (PS) Model. Therefore, it is assumed that projectile fragments alpha were produced from two separate sources that belong to the projectile spectator region differing drastically in their temperatures. It has been clearly observed that the emission of projectile fragments alpha are from two different sources. The contribution of projectile fragments alpha from contact layer or hot source is a few percent of the total emission of projectile fragments alphas. Most of the projectile fragments alphas are emitted from the cold source. It has been noticed that the temperature of hot and cold regions are dependent on the projectile mass number.

Characteristics of alpha projectile fragments emission in interaction of nuclei with emulsion

The properties of the relativistic alpha fragments produced in interactions of 84^Kr at around 1 A GeV in nuclear emulsion are investigated. The experimental results are compared with the similar results obtained from various projectiles with emulsion interactions at different energies. The total, partial nuclear cross-sections and production rates of alpha fragmentation channels in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions and their dependence on the mass number and initial energy of the incident projectile nucleus are investigated. The yields of multiple alpha fragments emitted from the interactions of projectile nuclei with the nuclei of light, medium and heavy target groups of emulsion-detector are discussed and they indicate that the projectile-breakup mechanism seems to be free from the target mass number. It is found that the multiplicity distributions of alpha fragments are well described by the Koba-Nielsen-Olesen (KNO) scaling presentation. The mean multiplicities of the freshly produced newly created charged secondary particles, normally known as shower and secondary particles associated with target in the events where the emission of alpha fragments were accompanied by heavy projectile fragments having Z value larger than 4 seem to be constant as the alpha fragments multiplicity increases, and exhibit a behavior independent of the alpha fragments multiplicity.

ICT in Universities of the Western Himalayan Region in India: Status, Performance- An Assessment

The present paper describes a live project study carried out for the universities located in the western Himalayan region of India in the year 2009. The objective of this study is to undertake the task of assessment regarding initiative, utilization of ICT resources, its performance and impact in these higher educational institutions/universities. In order to answer these, initially basic four- tier framework was prepared. Followed by a questionnaire containing different ICT components 18 different groups like vision, planning, implementation, ICT infrastructure and related activities exhibiting performance. Primary data in the form of feedback on the five point scale, of the questionnaire, was gathered from six universities of the region. A simple statistical analysis was undertaken using weighted mean, to assess the ICT initiative, status and performance of various universities. In the process, a question related to Performance Indicator was identified from each group, whose Coefficient of Correlation was calculated. This study suggests that a progressive vision, planning and initiative regarding academic syllabi, ICT infrastructure, used in training the skilled human resource, is going to have a favourable impact through actual placement, research and play a dominant role at the National and International level.

Multifragmentation Studies in 84Kr Interactions with Nuclear Emulsion at around 1 A GeV

Projectile fragmentation of 84Kr in three different energy intervals has been studied. Many aspects of multifragmentation process have been examined in depth. It is observed that multifragmentation is a general low energy phenomenon associated with heavy beam. The number of Intermediate-Mass-Fragments (IMF's) shows strong projetile mass dependence.

Estimation of Impact Parameter on event-by-event basis in Nuclear Emulsion Detector

Photographic Nuclear Emulsion Detector (PNED) has been in use in nuclear and particle physics experiments from the begining, often as the major detector system. However, direct measurement of impact parameter in this detector does not seem possible due to some limitations. This paper discribe a simple yet strong method to estimate the impact parameter of events on event-by-event basis. Though this method is develpoed specifically for the photographic nuclear emulsion detector, we envision that it should also be applicable to other multi-target detector systems.

Marginal distributions in $(\bf 2N)$-dimensional phase space and the quantum $(\bf N+1)$ marginal theorem

We study the problem of constructing a probability density in 2N-dimensional phase space which reproduces a given collection of $n$ joint probability distributions as marginals. Only distributions authorized by quantum mechanics, i.e. depending on a (complete) commuting set of $N$ variables, are considered. A diagrammatic or graph theoretic formulation of the problem is developed. We then exactly determine the set of ``admissible'' data, i.e. those types of data for which the problem always admits solutions. This is done in the case where the joint distributions originate from quantum mechanics as well as in the case where this constraint is not imposed. In particular, it is shown that a necessary (but not sufficient) condition for the existence of solutions is $n\leq N+1$. When the data are admissible and the quantum constraint is not imposed, the general solution for the phase space density is determined explicitly. For admissible data of a quantum origin, the general solution is given in certain (but not all) cases. In the remaining cases, only a subset of solutions is obtained.

Causal quantum mechanics treating position and momentum symmetrically

De Broglie and Bohm formulated a causal quantum mechanics with a phase space density whose integral over momentum reproduces the position probability density of usual statistical quantum theory. We propose a causal quantum theory with a joint probability distribution such that the separate probability distributions for position and momentum agree with usual quantum theory. Unlike the Wigner distribution the suggested distribution is positive definite and obeys the Liouville condition.

Structure of Abrikosov Vortices in SU(2) Lattice Gauge Theory

We calculate the electric flux and magnetic monopole current distribution in the presence of a static quark-antiquark pair for SU(2) lattice gauge theory in the maximal Abelian gauge. The current distribution confines the flux in a dual Abrikosov vortex whose core size is comparable to the flux penetration depth. The observed structure is described by a dual Ginzburg-Landau model.
