Altermagnetic lifting of Kramers spin degeneracy

Lifted Kramers spin-degeneracy has been among the central topics of condensed-matter physics since the dawn of the band theory of solids. It underpins established practical applications as well as current frontier research, ranging from magnetic-memory technology to topological quantum matter. Traditionally, lifted Kramers spin-degeneracy has been considered to originate from two possible internal symmetry-breaking mechanisms. The first one refers to time-reversal symmetry breaking by magnetization of ferromagnets, and tends to be strong due to the non-relativistic exchange-coupling origin. The second mechanism applies to crystals with broken inversion symmetry, and tends to be comparatively weaker as it originates from the relativistic spin-orbit coupling. A recent theory work based on spin-symmetry classification has identified an unconventional magnetic phase, dubbed altermagnetic, that allows for lifting the Kramers spin degeneracy without net magnetization and inversion-symmetry breaking. Here we provide the confirmation using photoemission spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. We identify two distinct unconventional mechanisms of lifted Kramers spin degeneracy generated by the altermagnetic phase of centrosymmetric MnTe with vanishing net magnetization. Our observation of the altermagnetic lifting of the Kramers spin degeneracy can have broad consequences in magnetism. It motivates exploration and exploitation of the unconventional nature of this magnetic phase in an extended family of materials, ranging from insulators and semiconductors to metals and superconductors, that have been either identified recently or perceived for many decades as conventional antiferromagnets.

Observation of Weyl nodes in TaAs

In 1929, H. Weyl proposed that the massless solution of Dirac equation represents a pair of new type particles, the so-called Weyl fermions [1]. However the existence of them in particle physics remains elusive for more than eight decades. Recently, significant advances in both topological insulators and topological semimetals have provided an alternative way to realize Weyl fermions in condensed matter as an emergent phenomenon: when two non-degenerate bands in the three-dimensional momentum space cross in the vicinity of Fermi energy (called as Weyl nodes), the low energy excitation behaves exactly the same as Weyl fermions. Here, by performing soft x-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements which mainly probe bulk band structure, we directly observe the long-sought-after Weyl nodes for the first time in TaAs, whose projected locations on the (001) surface match well to the Fermi arcs, providing undisputable experimental evidence of existence of Weyl fermion quasiparticles in TaAs.

A Rastall Scalar-Tensor theory

We formulate a theory combining the principles of a scalar-tensor gravity and the Rastall proposal of a violation of the usual conservation laws. In the resulting Brans-Dicke-Rastall (BDR) theory the only exact, static, spherically symmetric solution is a Robinson-Bertotti type solution besides the trivial Schwarzschild one. The PPN constraints can be completely satisfied for some values of the free parameters. The cosmological solutions display, among others, a decelerate-accelerate transition in the matter dominated phase.

On convergence to equilibrium in strongly coupled Bogoliubov's oscillator model

We examine classical Bogoliubov's model of a particle coupled to a heat bath which consists of infinitely many stochastic oscillators. Bogoliubov's result suggests that, in the stochastic limit, the model exhibits convergence to thermodynamical equilibrium. It has recently been shown that the system does attain the equilibrium if the coupling constant is small enough. We show that in the case of the large coupling constant the distribution function $ρ_{S}(q,p,t)\to 0$ pointwise as $t\to\infty$. This implies that if there is convergence to equilibrium, then the limit measure has no finite momenta. Besides, the probability to find the particle in any finite domain of phase space tends to zero. This is also true for domains in the coordinate space and in the momentum space.

Perihelion precession and deflection of light in gravitational field of wormholes

Quite exotic relativistic objects known as wormholes are hypothetical candidates for central machine of active galactic nuclei as well as black holes. We find the magnitude of the perihelion precession and the deflection of light in gravitational field of a wormhole and compare them with those for a black hole. The impact parameter is taken to be much larger than the wormhole throat size. We show that the relative difference between results for a black hole and a wormhole may be significant and amount to tens of percent.

Cosmological status of Lagrangian theory of density perturbations

We show that hydrodynamical and field approaches in theory of cosmological scalar perturbations are equivalent for a single medium. We also give relations between notations introduced by V. Lukash, J. Bardeen, J. Bardeen et al. and G. Chibisov and V. Mukhanov.
