Non-LTE Models for Neutron Star Atmospheres and Supernova-Fallback Disks

We describe our recent progress in modeling supernova-fallback disks and neutron star (NS) atmospheres. We present a first detailed spectrum synthesis calculation of a SN-fallback disk composed of iron. We assume a thin disk with a radial structure described by the alpha-disk model. The vertical structure and emission spectrum are computed self-consistently by solving the structure equations simultaneously with the radiation transfer equations under non-LTE conditions. We describe the properties of a specific disk model and discuss various effects on the emergent UV/optical spectrum. We investigate Compton scattering effects on the thermal spectrum of NSs. In addition, we constructed a new generation of metal line-blanketed non-LTE model atmospheres for NSs. It is compared to X-ray burst spectra of EXO0748-676. It is possible that the gravitational redshift, deduced from absorption lines, is lower (z=0.24) than hitherto assumed (z=0.35). Accordingly, this would result in NS mass and radius lower limits of M>1.63Msun and R>13.8 km.

The new pre-cataclysmic binary PG 2200+085

We present the results of spectroscopic-- and orbit--sampled photometric observations of the faint UV-excess object PG 2200+085. The optical CCD photometry observations of this object were performed by the Russian-Turkish 1.5-meter telescope RTT150 at the TUBITAK National Observatory (Turkey). The long-slit optical spectroscopy observations with 2.6 A resolution were carried out by 6-meter telescope BTA at the Special Astrophysical Observatory (Russia). The photometric variations over two nights are almost sinusoidal with an amplitude Δm_V = 0.04 m and a period of P = 0.3186 d. Such a light curve is typical of a detached close binary with an illumination effect or the ellipsoidal deformation of a secondary star. The observed spectrum clearly displays a featureless blue continuum of a hot component and a rich absorption--line and molecular band K--star spectrum. The CaII line profiles with strong emission cores are remarkably similar to those of V471 Tau. We tentatively classify PG 2200+085 as a pre-cataclysmic binary of the V471 Tau type.

On the Relevance of Compton Scattering for the Soft X-ray Spectra of Hot DA White Dwarfs

We re-examine the effects of Compton scattering on the emergent spectra of hot DA white dwarfs in the soft X-ray range. Earlier studies have implied that sensitive X-ray observations at wavelengths $λ< 50$ Åmight be capable of probing the flux deficits predicted by the redistribution of electron-scattered X-ray photons toward longer wavelengths. We adopt two independent numerical approaches to the inclusion of Compton scattering in the computation of pure hydrogen atmospheres in hydrostatic equilibrium. One employs the Kompaneets diffusion approximation formalism, while the other uses the cross-sections and redistribution functions of Guilbert. Models and emergent spectra are computed for stellar parameters representative of HZ 43 and Sirius B, and for models with an effective temperature $T_{\rm eff} = 100 000$ K. The differences between emergent spectra computed for Compton and Thomson scattering cases are completely negligible in the case of both HZ 43 and Sirius B models, and are also negligible for all practical purposes for models with temperatures as high as $T_{\rm eff} = 100 000$ K. Models of the soft X-ray flux from these stars are instead dominated by uncertainties in their fundamental parameters.

Supersoft X-ray Sources. Parameters of Stellar Atmospheres

ROSAT spectra of 11 supersoft X-ray sources (RX J0439.8-6809, RX J0513.9-6951, RX J0527.8-6954, CAL 87, CAL 83, 1E 0035.4-7230, RX J0048.4-7332, 1E 0056.8-7154, RX J0019.8 +2156, RX J0925.7-4758, AG Draconis) are approximated with theoretical spectra obtained in LTE models for the atmospheres of hot white dwarfs with line blanketing. The confidence intervals of parameters derived from these approximations $ T_{\rm eff}$, $\log g$, $N_H$, and $R^2/d^2$ are determined. The results are compared with predictions for a model with stable/recurrent thermonuclear burning on the white-dwarf surface.

Supersoft X-ray Sources. Basic Parameters

The parameters of ten supersoft X-ray sources (RX J0439.8-6809, RX J0513.9-6951, RX J0527.8-6954, CAL 87, CAL 83, 1E 0035.4-7230, RX J0048.4-7332, 1E 0056.8-7154, RX J0019.8 +2156, RX J0925.7-4758) observed by ROSAT obtained using blanketing LTE model atmospheres are analyzed. The consistency of the resulting parameters with a model with stable/recurrent burning on the surface of the white dwarf is studied. The luminosity and sizes of seven of the sources are in good agreement with this model. The masses of the white dwarfs in these sources are estimated. A formula that can be used to estimate the masses of white dwarfs in classical supersoft sources based on their effective temperatures is presented.

INTEGRAL Broadband X-ray spectrum of the intermediate polar V709 Cas

We present the hard X-ray time-averaged spectrum of the intermediate polar V709 Cas observed with INTEGRAL. We performed the observation using data from the IBIS/ISGRI instrument in the 20-100 keV energy band and from JEM-X at lower energy (5-20 keV). Using different multi-temperature and density X-ray post-shock models we measured a improved post-shock temperature of ~40 keV and estimated the V709 Cas mass to be 0.82(+0.12/-0.25} Msun. We compare the resulting spectral parameters with previously reported BeppoSAX and RXTE observations.

RXTE broadband X-ray spectra of intermediate polars and white dwarf mass estimates

We present results of an analysis of broadband spectra of 14 intermediate polars obtained with the RXTE observatory (PCA and HEXTE spectrometers, 3-100 keV). By means of our calculations of the structure and the emergent spectrum of the post-shock region of intermediate polars we fitted the observed spectra and obtained estimates of the white dwarf masses. The estimated masses are compared with masses obtained by other authors.

Broadband X-ray spectrum of intermediate polar V1223 Sgr

We present the broadband phase averaged spectrum of one of the brightest intermediate polars V1223 Sgr, obtained with INTEGRAL and RXTE observatories (3-100 keV). Good statistical quality of the spectrum in a hard X-ray energy band (INTEGRAL/IBIS and RXTE/HEXTE) allowed us to disentangle contributions of a direct optically thin plasma emission and a reflected component to the spectrum of V1223 Sgr. The obtained measurement of the post-shock temperature of the accreting matter give us the information about the mass of the white dwarf and the inclination of the system.

High efficiency of soft X-ray radiation reprocessing in supersoft X-ray sources due to multiple scattering

Detailed analysis of the lightcurve of CAL 87 clearly has shown that the high optical luminosity comes from the accretion disc rim and can only be explained by a severe thickening of the disc rim near the location where the accretion stream impinges. This area is irradiated by the X-rays where it faces the white dwarf. Only if the reprocessing rate of X-rays to optical light is high a luminosity as high as observed can be understood. But a recent detailed study of the soft X-ray radiation reprocessing in supersoft X-ray sources has shown that the efficiency is not high enough. We here propose a solution for this problem. As already discussed in the earlier lightcurve analysis the impact of the accretion stream at the outer disc rim produces a ``spray'', consisting of a large number of individual gas blobs imbedded in a surrounding corona. For the high mass flow rate this constitutes an optically thick vertically extended screen at the rim of the accretion disc. We analyse the optical properties of this irradiated spray and find that the multiple scattering between these gas blobs leads to an effective reprocessing of soft X-rays to optical light as required by the observations.
