Fabrication of thin planar radiopure foils with 82Se for the SuperNEMO Demonstrator

The SuperNEMO Demonstrator, designed to search for double beta decay using enriched 82Se, has been assembled in the Modane Underground Laboratory under the French Alps. Thin foils with radio - purified and enriched 82Se are installed centrally in the detector. A novel foil fabrication method has been developed, improving the radiopurity achieved in the previous generation experiment. It consists of wrapping standalone selenium pads in raw Mylar, combined with selenium purified by a new reverse-chromatography method. This paper describes the features of these foils, their fabrication process, the characterization results, and the integration of the foils into the SuperNEMO Demonstrator.

Calorimeter commissioning of the SuperNEMO Demonstrator

The SuperNEMO experiment is searching for neutrinoless double beta decay of \textsuperscript{82}Se, with the unique combination of a tracking detector and a segmented calorimeter. This feature allows to detect the two electrons emitted in the decay and measure their individual energy and angular distribution. The SuperNEMO calorimeter consists of 712 plastic scintillator blocks readout by large PMTs. After the construction of the demonstrator calorimeter underground, we have performed its first commissioning using $\gamma$-particles from calibration sources or from the ambient radioactive background. This article presents the quality assurance tests of the SuperNEMO demonstrator calorimeter and its first time and energy calibrations, with the associated methods.

New Limits on Double Electron Capture of $^{40}$Ca and $^{180}$W

We analyzed low-background data from the CRESST-II experiment with a total net exposure of 730 kg days to extract limits on double electron capture processes. We established new limits for $^{40}$Ca with $T_{1/2}^{2v2K}>9.9\times10^{21}$ y and $T_{1/2}^{0v2EC}>1.4\times10^{22}$ y and for $^{180}$W with T$_{1/2}^{2v2K}>3.1\times10^{19}$ y and $T_{1/2}^{0v2EC}>9.4\times10^{18}$ y at 90% CL. Depending on the process, these values improve the currently best limits by a factor of $\sim$1.4-30.

Probing New Physics Models of Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay with SuperNEMO

The possibility to probe new physics scenarios of light Majorana neutrino exchange and right-handed currents at the planned next generation neutrinoless double beta decay experiment SuperNEMO is discussed. Its ability to study different isotopes and track the outgoing electrons provides the means to discriminate different underlying mechanisms for the neutrinoless double beta decay by measuring the decay half-life and the electron angular and energy distributions.

Results of the BiPo-1 prototype for radiopurity measurements for the SuperNEMO double beta decay source foils

The development of BiPo detectors is dedicated to the measurement of extremely high radiopurity in $^{208}$Tl and $^{214}$Bi for the SuperNEMO double beta decay source foils. A modular prototype, called BiPo-1, with 0.8 $m^2$ of sensitive surface area, has been running in the Modane Underground Laboratory since February, 2008. The goal of BiPo-1 is to measure the different components of the background and in particular the surface radiopurity of the plastic scintillators that make up the detector. The first phase of data collection has been dedicated to the measurement of the radiopurity in $^{208}$Tl. After more than one year of background measurement, a surface activity of the scintillators of $\mathcal{A}$($^{208}$Tl) $=$ 1.5 $μ$Bq/m$^2$ is reported here. Given this level of background, a larger BiPo detector having 12 m$^2$ of active surface area, is able to qualify the radiopurity of the SuperNEMO selenium double beta decay foils with the required sensitivity of $\mathcal{A}$($^{208}$Tl) $<$ 2 $μ$Bq/kg (90% C.L.) with a six month measurement.

Feasibility study of the observation of the neutrino accompanied double beta-decay of Ge-76 to the 0+(1) excited state of Se-76 using segmented germanium detectors

Neutrino accompanied double beta-decay of Ge-76 can populate the ground state and the excited states of Se-76. While the decay to the ground state has been observed with a half-life of 1.74 +0.18 -0.16 10^21 years, decays to the excited states have not yet been observed. Nuclear matrix elements depend on details of the nuclear transitions. A measurement of the half-life of the transition considered here could help to reduce the uncertainties of the calculations of the nuclear matrix element for the neutrinoless double beta decay of Ge-76. This parameter relates the half-life of the process to the effective Majorana neutrino mass. The results of a feasibility study to detect the neutrino accompanied double beta-decay of Ge-76 to the excited states of Se-76 are presented in this paper. Segmented germanium detectors were assumed in this study. Such detectors, enriched in Ge-76 to a level of about 86%, will be deployed in the GERDA experiment located at the INFN Gran Sasso National Laboratory, Italy. It is shown that the decay of Ge-76 to the 1122 keV 0+ level of Se-76 can be observed in GERDA provided that the half-life of the process is in the range favoured by the present calculations which is 7.5 10^21 y to 3.1 10^23 y.

Measurement of double beta decay of 100Mo to excited states in the NEMO 3 experiment

The double beta decay of 100Mo to the 0^+_1 and 2^+_1 excited states of 100Ru is studied using the NEMO 3 data. After the analysis of 8024 h of data the half-life for the two-neutrino double beta decay of 100Mo to the excited 0^+_1 state is measured to be T^(2nu)_1/2 = [5.7^{+1.3}_{-0.9}(stat)+/-0.8(syst)]x 10^20 y. The signal-to-background ratio is equal to 3. Information about energy and angular distributions of emitted electrons is also obtained. No evidence for neutrinoless double beta decay to the excited 0^+_1 state has been found. The corresponding half-life limit is T^(0nu)_1/2(0^+ --> 0^+_1) > 8.9 x 10^22 y (at 90% C.L.). The search for the double beta decay to the 2^+_1 excited state has allowed the determination of limits on the half-life for the two neutrino mode T^(2nu)_1/2(0^+ --> 2^+_1) > 1.1 x 10^21 y (at 90% C.L.) and for the neutrinoless mode T^(0nu)_1/2(0^+ --> 2^+_1) > 1.6 x 10^23 y (at 90% C.L.).

Possible background reductions in double beta decay experiments

The background induced by radioactive impurities of $^{208}\rm Tl$ and $^{214}\rm Bi$ in the source of the double beta experiment NEMO-3 has been investigated. New methods of data analysis which decrease the background from the above mentioned contamination are identified. The techniques can also be applied to other double beta decay experiments capable of measuring independently the energies of the two electrons.

Classical relativistic systems of charged particles in the front form of dynamics and the Liouville equation

Classical relativistic system of point particles coupled with an electromagnetic field is considered in the three-dimensional representation. The gauge freedom connected with the chronometrical invariance of the four-dimensional description is reduced by use of the geometrical concept of the forms of relativistic dynamics. The remainder gauge degrees of freedom of the electromagnetic potential are analysed within the framework of Dirac's constrained Hamiltonian mechanics in the front form of dynamics. The results are implemented to the problems of relativistic statistical mechanics. Based on the corresponding Liouville equation the classical partition function of the system is written down in a gauge-invariant manner and an integration over field variables is performed.

Isotropic Forms of Dynamics in the Relativistic Direct Interaction Theory

The Lagrangian relativistic direct interaction theory in the various forms of dynamics is formulated and its connections with the Fokker-type action theory and with the constrained Hamiltonian mechanics are established. The motion of classical two-particle system with relativistic direct interaction is analysed within the framework of isotropic forms of dynamics in the two- and four-dimensional space-time. Some relativistic exactly solvable quantum-mechanical models are also discussed.

Quasi-Relativistic Center-of-Mass Variables in Applications

Collective center-of-mass variables are introduced in the Lagrangian formalism of the relativistic classical mechanics of directly interacting particles. It is shown that the transition to the Hamiltonian formalism leads to the Bakamjian-Thomas model. The quantum-mechanical system consisting of two spinless particles is investigated. Quasi-relativistic corrections to the discrete energy spectrum are calculated for some Coulomb-like interactions having field theoretical analogues.

On Relativistic Models in the Equilibrium Statistical Mechanics

Relativistic effects in the thermodynamical properties of interacting particle systems are investigated within the framework of the relativistic direct interaction theory in various forms of dynamics. In the front form of relativistic dynamics an exactly solvable model of a one-dimensional hard spheres gas is formulated and an equation of state and thermodynamical potentials for such a gas are found. Weakly-relativistic corrections to the thermodynamical functions of the dilute gas with short-range interactions are discussed on the basis of the approximately relativistic Hamiltonian function in the instant form of dynamics.
