Spin polarization of light atoms in jellium: Detailed electronic structures

We revisit the problem of the spontaneous magnetization of an {\em sp} impurity atom in a simple metal host. The main features of interest are: (i) Formation of the spherical spin density/charge density wave around the impurity; (ii) Considerable decrease in the size of the pseudoatom in the spin-polarized state as compared with the paramagnetic one, and (iii) Relevance of the electron affinity of the isolated atom to this spin polarization, which is clarified by tracing the transformation of the pseudoatom into an isolated negative ion in the low-density limit of the enveloping electron gas.

Time-Dependent Density-Functional Theory for the Stopping Power of an Interacting Electron Gas for Slow Ions

Based on the time-dependent density-functional theory, we have derived a rigorous formula for the stopping power of an {\it interacting} electron gas for ions in the limit of low projectile velocities. If dynamical correlation between electrons is not taken into account, this formula recovers the corresponding stopping power of {\it noninteracting} electrons in an effective Kohn-Sham potential. The correlation effect, specifically the excitonic one in electron-hole pair excitations, however, is found to considerably enhance the stopping power for intermediately charged ions, bringing our theory into good agreement with experiment.

Variational approach to the scattering of charged particles by a many-electron system

We report a variational approach to the nonlinearly screened interaction of charged particles with a many-electron system. This approach has been developed by introducing a modification of the Schwinger variational principle of scattering theory, which allows to obtain nonperturbative scattering cross-sections of moving projectiles from the knowledge of the linear and quadratic density-response functions of the target. Our theory is illustrated with a calculation of the energy loss per unit path length of slow antiprotons moving in a uniform electron gas, which shows good agreement with a fully nonlinear self-consistent Hartree calculation. Since available self-consistent calculations are restricted to low heavy-projectile velocities, we expect our theory to have novel applications to a variety of processes where nonlinear screening plays an important role.

Time-dependent density-functional theory approach to nonlinear particle-solid interactions in comparison with scattering theory

An explicit expression for the quadratic density-response function of a many-electron system is obtained in the framework of the time-dependent density-functional theory, in terms of the linear and quadratic density-response functions of noninteracting Kohn-Sham electrons and functional derivatives of the time-dependent exchange-correlation potential. This is used to evaluate the quadratic stopping power of a homogeneous electron gas for slow ions, which is demonstrated to be equivalent to that obtained up to second order in the ion charge in the framework of a fully nonlinear scattering approach. Numerical calculations are reported, thereby exploring the range of validity of quadratic-response theory.

Theory of acoustic surface plasmons

Recently, a novel low-energy collective excitation has been predicted to exist at metal surfaces where a quasi two-dimensional (2D) surface-state band coexists with the underlying three-dimensional (3D) continuum. Here we present a model in which the screening of a semiinfinite 3D metal is incorporated into the description of electronic excitations in a 2D electron gas through the introduction of an effective 2D dielectric function. Our self-consistent calculations of the dynamical response of the 3D substrate indicate that an acoustic surface plasmon exists for all possible locations of the 2D sheet relative to the metal surface. This low-energy excitation, which exhibits linear dispersion at low wave vectors, is dictated by the nonlocality of the 3D dynamical response providing incomplete screening of the 2D electron-density oscillations.

Nonlinear, band-structure, and surface effects in the interaction of charged particles with solids

A survey is presented of various aspects of the interaction of charged particles with solids. In the framework of many-body perturbation theory, we study the nonlinear interaction of charged particles with a free gas of interacting electrons; in particular, nonlinear corrections to the stopping power are analyzed, and special emphasis is made on the separate contributions that are originated in the excitation of either electron-hole pairs, single plasmons, or double plasmons. Ab initio calculations of the electronic energy loss of ions moving in real solids are also presented, and the energy loss of charged particles interacting with simple metal surfaces is addressed.
