Performance study of the Highly Granular Neutron Detector prototype in the BM@N experiment

The time-of-flight Highly Granular Neutron Detector (HGND) with a multilayer longitudinal structure of interleaved absorber and scintillator plates, high transverse granularity and a time resolution of about 150 ps is currently under development. The detector is designed to identify neutrons produced in nucleus-nucleus collisions and measure neutron kinetic energies of 0.3-4 GeV by the time-of-flight method in the BM@N experiment at the NICA accelerator complex at JINR. In order to validate the concept of the full-scale HGND, a compact HGND prototype was first designed and built, and its performance was studied in the BM@N experiment. The acceptance of the HGND prototype and the detection efficiency of forward neutrons emitted in hadronic fragmentation and electromagnetic dissociation (EMD) of 3.8A GeV 124Xe projectiles interacting with a CsI target were calculated by means of the DCM-QGSM-SMM and RELDIS models, respectively. The energy distributions of forward spectator neutrons and neutrons from the EMD were measured and compared with the simulations. The developed methods will be used to calibrate the full-scale HGND and to study its efficiency.

Peculiarities of neutron waveguides with thin Gd layer

Peculiarities of the formation of a neutron enhanced standing wave in the structure with a thin highly absorbing layer of gadolinium are considered in the article. An analogue of the poisoning effect well known in reactor physics was found. The effect is stronger for the Nb/Gd/Nb system. Despite of this effect, for a Nb/Gd bilayer and a Nb/Gd/Nb trilayer placed between Al2O3 substrate and Cu layer, it is shown theoretically and experimentally that one order of magnitude enhancement of neutron density is possible in the vicinity of the Gd layer. This enhancement makes it possible to study domain formation in the Gd layer under transition of the Nb layer(s) into the superconducting state (cryptoferromagnetic phase).

Terahertz superlattice parametric oscillator

We report a GaAs/AlAs superlattice parametric oscillator. It was pumped by a microwave field (power few mW) and produced 3rd harmonic radiation (frequency near 300 GHz). The nonlinearity of the active superlattice was due to Bragg reflections of conduction electrons at the superlattice planes. A theory of the nonlinearity indicates that parametric oscillation should be possible up to frequencies above 10 THz. The active superlattice may be the object of further studies of predicted extraordinary nonlinearities for THz fields.
