Possible studies at the first stage of the NICA collider operation with polarized and unpolarized proton and deuteron beams

This paper contains suggestions for experiments with usage of the Spin Physics Detector (SPD) at the first stage of the SPD NICA Programme developing at JINR. Double polarized pp-, dd- and pd- collisions at c.m.s. NN energies of 3.4-10 GeV, which will be accessible at the initial stage of experiments, allow one to study spin dependence of the NN interaction, search for multiquark states at double strangeness, charm and beauty thresholds, study the short-range structure of the deuteron. Double polarized pd scattering offer a possibility to test the Standard Model through the search for T-invariance violation.

The polarized proton and antiproton beam project at U-70 accelerator

The design and parameters of the polarized-beam facility at U-70 proton synchrotron of NRC Kurchatov Institute - IHEP are presented. The new beamline 24A will provide the polarized proton and antiproton beams for carrying out the rich physics program of the SPASCHARM experiment for comprehensive studies of spin phenomena in a wide spectrum of hadronic reactions in the energy range of 10-45 GeV.

Comparative study of the inclusive asymmetries induced by polarized protons and antiprotons at 16 GeV/$c$ at the U-70 accelerator

The only comparative study of the inclusive pion single-spin asymmetries produced in the interactions of the polarized protons and antiprotons in collisions with unpolarized proton was carried out at E-704 experiment. Significant asymmetries were found at large $x_{F}$ and middle $p_{T}$, $π^{+}$ and $π^{0}$ asymmetries have positive signs while $π^{-}$ has negative one in the $p^{\uparrow}+p$ collisions, while in the $\bar{p}^{\uparrow}+p$ interactions the $π^{-}$ and $π^{0}$ asymmetries have positive signs while $π^{+}$ has negative sign. Similar experimental study can be done in the SPASCHARM experiment at U-70 accelerator at IHEP for various secondary particles with the use of 16 GeV polarized proton and antiproton beams.

The First Stage of Polarization Program Spascharm at the Accelerator U-70 of Ihep

The first stage of the proposed polarization program SPASCHARM includes the measurements of the single-spin asymmetry (SSA) in exclusive and inclusive reactions with production of stable hadrons and the light meson and baryon resonances. In this study we foresee of using the variety of the unpolarized beams (pions, kaons, protons and antiprotons) in the energy range of 30-60 GeV. The polarized proton and deuteron targets will be used for revealing the flavor and isotopic spin dependencies of the polarization phenomena. The neutral and charged particles in the final state will be detected.

Microscopic Stern-Gerlach Effect and Thomas Spin Precession as an Origin of the SSA

The single-spin asymmetry and hadron polarization data are analyzed in the framework of a phenomenological effective-color-field model. Global analysis of the single-spin effects in hadron production is performed for h+h, h+A, A+A and lepton+N interactions. The model explains the dependence of the data on $x_{F}$, $p_{T}$, collision energy $\sqrt{s}$ and atomic weights $A_{1}$ and $A_{2}$ of colliding nuclei. The predictions are given for not yet explored kinematical regions.

Single Spin Effects in Collisions of Hadrons and Heavy Ions at High Energy

Experimental data on transverse single-spin asymmetry, hyperon polarization and vector meson alignment in h+h, h+A and A+A-collisions have been analyzed. A new mechanism for the origin of single spin effects is proposed, which takes into account the interaction of massive constituent quarks via their chromomagnetic moment with an effective inhomogeneous chromomagnetic field of strings, produced after the initial color exchange. Quark spin precession in the color field is taken into account, which can be the reason for an oscillation of the single spin observables as a function of Feynman $x_{F}$ and its energy dependence. The model predictions are compared with the experimental data, in particular with the heavy ion collision data. The data are consistent with a large negative anomalous chromomagnetic moment of the constituent quarks which is predicted in the instanton model.

Spin physics program in the U70 polarized proton beam

A possibility to accelerate a high intensity polarized proton beam up to 70 GeV at the IHEP accelerator, extract it from the main ring and deliver to several experimental setups is being studied now. We propose to study a wealth of single- and double-spin observables in various reactions using longitudinally and transverserly polarized proton beams at U70. The proposed measurements can be done at the existing detectors as well as require to create a few new experimental setups at U70.

Single Spin Asymmetry in High Pt Charged Hadron Production off Nuclei at 40 GeV

The single transverse spin asymmetry data for the charged hadron production in pC and pCu interactions are presented. The measurements have been performed at FODS-2 experimental setup using 40 GeV/c IHEP polarized proton beam. The hadron transverse momentum range is from 0.5 GeV/c up to 4 GeV/c. The data obtained off the nuclear targets are compared with the proton target data measured earlier with the same experimental setup and with the data of other experiments.

Production Asymmetry Measurement of High Xt Hadrons in pp Collisions at 40 GeV

Single-spin asymmetries for hadrons have been measured in collisions of transversely-polarized 40 GeV/c proton beam with an unpolarized liquid hydrogen target. The asymmetries were measured for pi+-, K+-, protons and antiprotons, produced in the central region (0.02 < Xf < 0.10 and 0.7 < Pt < 3.4 GeV/c). Asymmetries for pi+-, K+- and antiprotons show within measurement errors the linear dependence on Xt and change a sign near 0.37. For protons negative asymmetry, independent of Xt has been found. The results are compared with those of other experiments and SU(6) model predictions.

Studies of the Response of the Prototype CMS Hadron Calorimeter, Including Magnetic Field Effects, to Pion, Electron, and Muon Beams

We report on the response of a prototype CMS hadron calorimeter module to charged particle beams of pions, muons, and electrons with momenta up to 375 GeV/c. The data were taken at the H2 and H4 beamlines at CERN in 1995 and 1996. The prototype sampling calorimeter used copper absorber plates and scintillator tiles with wavelength shifting fibers for readout. The effects of a magnetic field of up to 3 Tesla on the response of the calorimeter to muons, electrons, and pions are presented, and the effects of an upstream lead tungstate crystal electromagnetic calorimeter on the linearity and energy resolution of the combined calorimetric system to hadrons are evaluated. The results are compared with Monte Carlo simulations and are used to optimize the choice of total absorber depth, sampling frequency, and longitudinal readout segmentation.
