Rapid and Inexpensive Reconstruction of 3D Structures for Micro-Objects Using Common Optical Microscopy

A simple method of constructing the 3D surface of non-transparent micro-objects by extending the depth-of-field on the whole attainable surface is presented. The series of images of a sample are recorded by the sequential movement of the sample with respect to the microscope focus. The portions of the surface of the sample appear in focus in the different images in the series. The indexed series of the in-focus portions of the sample surface is combined in one sharp 2D image and interpolated into the 3D surface representing the surface of an original micro-object. For an image acquisition and processing we use a conventional upright stage microscope that is operated manually, the inexpensive Helicon Focus software, and the open source MeshLab software. Three objects were tested: an inclined flat glass slide with an imprinted 10 um calibration grid, a regular metal 100x100 per inch mesh, and a highly irregular surface of a material known as a porous electrode used in polyelectrolyte fuel cells. The accuracy of the reconstruction of the image features was found to be ~ 0.01 for the heights of ~ 100 um with the corresponding image acquisition time being ~ 10 min.

A lyotropic ferrocolloid (ferronematic) based on a potassium laurate/1-decanole/water ternary solution

A lyotropic ferrocolloid is synthesized by mixing of a cationic ferrofluid and potassium laurate/1-decanol/water ternary solution. Conditions of existence of a nematic phase in this mixture, other mesophases, and their phase diagrams in the vicinity of the nematic one are obtained and characterized quantitatively. Inside of the nematic zone the lyotropic ferrocolloid becomes a ferronematic, i.e., a liquid crystal with remarkably strong magnetic properties. We found that the pH and the component concentrations dramatically affect the amount of magnetic particles stably suspended in a lyotropic carrier. Magnetization and magnetic susceptibility of synthesized ferronematics are measured depending on the concentration of dispersed magnetic particles.

Transparent Lyotropic Ferronematics

Transparent lyotropic ferronematic dispersions are synthesized by admixing a cationic ferrofluid to the lyotropic liquid crystal PL/1D/Wt. The transparency is spontaneous and time-independent. It is observed in zero magnetic field in white and polarized light for disordered layers of ferroliquid crystals of thicknesses ~1 cm in both isotropic and nematic phases. Justification of the low extinction of light in the systems of the lyotropic origin is presented.

On the thermocapillary motion of deformable droplets

In studies on Marangoni type motion of particles the surface tension is often approximated as a linear function of temperature. For deformable particles in a linear external temperature gradient far from the reference point this approximation yields a negative surface tension which is physically unrealistic. It is shown that H.Zhou and R.H.Davis J. Colloid Interface Sci., n.181,60,1996 presented calculation where the leading deformable drop moved into a region of negative surface tension. With respect numerical studies the restriction of the migration of two deformable drops is given in terms of the drift time.
