Experiment Neutrino-4 search for sterile neutrino and results of measurements

The experiment Neutrino-4 had started in 2014 with a detector model and then was continued with a full-scale detector in 2016 - 2021. In this article we describe all steps of preparatory work on this experiment. We present all results of the Neutrino-4 experiment with increased statistical accuracy provided to date. The experimental setup is constructed to measure the flux and spectrum of the reactor antineutrinos as a function of distance to the center of the active zone of the SM-3 reactor (Dimitrovgrad, Russia) in the range of 6 - 12 meters. Using all the collected data, we performed a model-independent analysis to determine the oscillation parameters $Δm_{14}^2$ and $\sin^22θ_{14}$. The method of coherent summation of measurement results allows to directly demonstrate the oscillation effect. We present the analysis of possible systematic errors and the MC model of the experiment, which considers the possibility of the effect manifestation at the present precision level. As a result of the analysis, we can conclude that at currently available statistical accuracy we observe the oscillations at the $2.9σ$ level with parameters $Δm_{14}^2=(7.3\pm0.13_{st}\pm1.16_{sys})\text{eV}^2 = (7.3\pm1.17)\text{eV}^2$ and $\sin^22θ_{14}= 0.36\pm0.12_{stat}(2.9σ)$. Monte Carlo based statistical analysis gave estimation of confidence level at $2.7σ$. We plan to improve the currently working experimental setup and create a completely new setup in order to increase the accuracy of the experiment by 3 times. We also provide a brief analysis of the general experimental situation in the search for sterile neutrinos.

Measurement of the neutron electric dipole moment via spin rotation in a non-centrosymmetric crystal

We have measured the neutron electric dipole moment using spin rotation in a non-centrosymmetric crystal. Our result is d_n = (2.5 +- 6.5(stat) +- 5.5(syst)) 10^{-24} e cm. The dominating contribution to the systematic uncertainty is statistical in nature and will reduce with improved statistics. The statistical sensitivity can be increased to 2 10^{-26} e cm in 100 days data taking with an improved setup. We state technical requirements for a systematic uncertainty at the same level.

Neutron diffraction constraint on spin-dependent short range interaction

The direct constraint on the parameters of short range pseudomagnetic interaction of free neutron with matter is obtained from the recent test experiment on a search for neutron EDM by crystal-diffraction method. It is shown that this constraint on a product of scalar to pseudo-scalar coupling constants $g_s g_p$ is better than that of any other method for the range $λ< 10^{-5}$cm.

Measurement of the neutron electric dipole moment by crystal diffraction

An experiment using a prototype setup to search for the neutron electric dipole moment by measuring spin-rotation in a non-centrosymmetric crystal (quartz) was carried out to investigate statistical sensitivity and systematic effects of the method. It has been demonstrated that the concept of the method works. The preliminary result of the experiment is $d_{\rm n}=(2.5\pm 6.5)\cdot 10^{-24}$ e$\cdot $cm. The experiment showed that an accuracy of $\sim 2.5\cdot 10^{-26}$ e$\cdot $cm can be obtained in 100 days data taking, using available quartz crystals and neutron beams.

Preparation of facilities for fundamental research with ultracold neutrons at PNPI

The WWR-M reactor of PNPI offers a unique opportunity to prepare a source for ultracold neutrons (UCN) in an environment of high neutron flux (about 3*10^12 n/cm^2/s) at still acceptable radiation heat release (about 4*10^-3 W/g). It can be realized within the reactor thermal column situated close to the reactor core. With its large diameter of 1 m, this channel allows to install a 15 cm thick bismuth shielding, a graphite premoderator (300 dm^3 at 20 K), and a superfluid helium converter (35 dm^3). At a temperature of 1.2 K it is possible to remove the heat release power of about 20 W. Using the 4pi flux of cold neutrons within the reactor column can bring more than a factor 100 of cold neutron flux incident on the superfluid helium with respect to the present cold neutron beam conditions at the ILL reactor. The storage lifetime for UCN in superfluid He at 1.2 K is about 30 s, which is sufficient when feeding experiments requiring a similar filling time. The calculated density of UCN with energy between 50 neV and 250 neV in an experimental volume of 40 liters is about 10^4 n/cm^3. Technical solutions for realization of the project are discussed.

Test experiment to search for a neutron EDM by the Laue diffraction method

A prototype experiment to measure the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) by spin-rotation in a non-centrosymmetric crystal in Laue geometry was carried out in order to investigate the statistical sensitivity and systematic effects of the method. The statistical sensitivity to the nEDM was about $6\cdot 10^{-24}$ e$\cdot $cm per day and can be improved by one order of magnitude for the full scale setup. Systematics was limited by the homogeneity of the magnetic field in the crystal region and by a new kind of spin rotation effect. We attribute this effect to a difference of the two Bloch waves amplitudes in the crystal, which is caused by the presence of a small crystal deformation due to a temperature gradient. In a revised scheme of the experiment, this effect could be exploited for a purposeful manipulation of the Bloch waves.

Neutron Diffraction and Optics of a Noncentrosymmetric Crystal. New Feasibility of a Search for Neutron EDM

Recently strong electric fields (up to 10^9 V/cm) have been discovered, which affect the neutrons moving in noncentrosymmetric crystals. Such fields allow new polarization phenomena in neutron diffraction and optics and provide, for instance, a new feasibility of a search for the neutron electric dipole moment (EDM). A series of experiments was carried out in a few last years on study of the dynamical diffraction of polarized neutrons in thick (1-10 cm) quartz crystals, using the forward diffraction beam and Bragg angles close to 90^0. As well new neutron optics phenomena were investigated. The feasibility of experiment on a search for neutron EDM using Laue diffraction in crystals without a center of symmetry was tested at the reactors: WWR-M in Gatchina and HFR in Grenoble. It was shown that the sensitivity can reach (3 - 6)\cdot 10^{-25}e cm per day for the available quartz crystal and cold neutron beam flux.
