Searches for new sources of CP violation using molecules as quantum sensors

We discuss how molecule-based searches offer complementary probes to study the violation of fundamental symmetries. These experiments have the potential to probe not only the electron EDM, but also hadronic CPV phenomena. Future experimental developments will offer generic sensitivity to probe flavor neutral sources of both leptonic and hadronic CPV at scales of $\geq$ 100 TeV, and flavor changing CPV at scales of $\geq$ 1000 TeV.

Limits on $CP$-violating hadronic interactions and proton EDM from paramagnetic molecules

Experiments with paramagnetic ground or metastable excited states of molecules (ThO, HfF$^+$, YbF, YbOH, BaF, PbO, etc.) provide strong constraints on electron electric dipole moment (EDM) and coupling constant $C_{SP}$ of contact semileptonic interaction. We compute new contributions to $C_{SP}$ arising from the nucleon EDMs due to combined electric and magnetic electron-nucleon interaction. This allows us to improve limits from the experiments with paramagnetic molecules on the $CP$-violating parameters, such as the proton EDM, $|d_p|< 1.1\times 10^{-23} e\cdot $cm, the QCD vacuum angle, $|\bar θ|<1.4\times 10^{-8}$, as well as the quark chromo-EDMs and $π$-meson-nucleon couplings. Our results may also be used to search for the axion dark matter which produces oscillating $\barθ$.

Improved limits on axion-like-particle-mediated P,T-violating interactions between electrons and nucleons from electric dipole moments of atoms and molecules

In the presence of P,T-violating interactions, the exchange of axion-like particles between electrons and nucleons in atoms and molecules induces electric dipole moments (EDMs) of atoms and molecules. We perform calculations of such axion-exchange-induced atomic EDMs using the relativistic Hartree-Fock-Dirac method including electron core polarisation (RPA) corrections. We present analytical estimates to explain the dependence of these induced atomic EDMs on the axion mass and atomic parameters. From the experimental bounds on the EDMs of atoms and molecules, including $^{133}$Cs, $^{205}$Tl, $^{129}$Xe, $^{199}$Hg, $^{171}$Yb$^{19}$F, $^{180}$Hf$^{19}$F$^+$ and $^{232}$Th$^{16}$O, we constrain the P,T-violating scalar-pseudoscalar nucleon-electron and electron-electron interactions mediated by a generic axion-like particle of arbitrary mass. Our limits improve on existing laboratory bounds from other experiments by many orders of magnitude for $m_a \gtrsim 10^{-2}~\textrm{eV}$. We also place constraints on CP violation in certain types of relaxion models.

Effects of $CP$-violating internucleon interactions in paramagnetic molecules

We demonstrate that electron electric dipole moment experiments with molecules in paramagnetic state are sensitive to $P,T$-violating nuclear forces and other $CP$-violating parameters in the hadronic sector. These experiments, in particular, measure the coupling constant $C_{SP}$ of the $CP$-odd contact semileptonic interaction. We establish relations between $C_{SP}$ and different $CP$-violating hadronic parameters including strength constants of the $CP$-odd nuclear potentials, $CP$-odd pion-nucleon interactions, quark-chromo EDM and QCD vacuum angle. These relations allow us to find limits on various $CP$-odd hadronic parameters.

Measuring the fine structure constant on a white dwarf surface; a detailed analysis of Fe V absorption in G191-B2B

The gravitational potential phi = GM/Rc^2 at the surface of the white dwarf G191-B2B is 10,000 times stronger than that at the Earth's surface. Numerous photospheric absorption features are detected, making this a suitable environment to test theories in which the fundamental constants depend on gravity. We have measured the fine structure constant, alpha, at the white dwarf surface, used a newly calibrated Hubble Space Telescope STIS spectrum of G191-B2B, two new independent sets of laboratory Fe V wavelengths, and new atomic calculations of the sensitivity parameters that quantify Fe V wavelength dependency on alpha. The two results obtained are: dalpha/alpha = 6.36 +/- [0.33(stat) + 1.94(sys)] X 10^{-5} and dalpha/alpha = 4.21 +/- [0.47(stat) + 2.35(sys)] X 10^{-5}. The measurements hint that the fine structure constant increases slightly in the presence of strong gravitational fields. A comprehensive search for systematic errors is summarised, including possible effects from line misidentifications, line blending, stratification of the white dwarf atmosphere, the quadratic Zeeman effect and electric field effects, photospheric velocity flows, long-range wavelength distortions in the HST spectrum, and variations in the relative Fe isotopic abundances. None fully account for the observed deviation but the systematic uncertainties are heavily dominated by laboratory wavelength measurement precision.

Sensitivity of EDM experiments in paramagnetic atoms and molecules to hadronic CP violation

Experiments searching for the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the electron $d_e$ utilise atomic/molecular states with one or more uncompensated electron spins, and these paramagnetic systems have recently achieved remarkable sensitivity to $d_e$. If the source of $CP$ violation resides entirely in the hadronic sector, the two-photon exchange processes between electrons and the nucleus induce $CP$-odd semileptonic interactions, parametrised by the Wilson coefficient $C_{SP}$, and provide the dominant source of EDMs in paramagnetic systems instead of $d_e$. We evaluate the $C_{SP}$ coefficients induced by the leading hadronic sources of $CP$ violation, namely nucleon EDMs and $CP$-odd pion-nucleon couplings, by calculating the nucleon-number-enhanced $CP$-odd nuclear scalar polarisability, employing chiral perturbation theory at the nucleon level and the Fermi-gas model for the nucleus. This allows us to translate the ACME EDM limits from paramagnetic ThO into novel independent constraints on the QCD theta term $|\bar θ| < 3 \times 10^{-8}$, proton EDM $|d_p| < 2 \times 10^{-23}\,e\,{\rm cm}$, isoscalar $CP$-odd pion-nucleon coupling $|\bar g^{(1)}_{πNN}| < 4 \times 10^{-10}$, and colour EDMs of quarks $|\tilde d_u - \tilde d_d| < 2 \times 10^{-24}\,{\rm cm}$. We note that further experimental progress with EDM experiments in paramagnetic systems may allow them to rival the sensitivity of EDM experiments with neutrons and diamagnetic atoms to these quantities.

Time keeping and searching for new physics using metastable states of Cu, Ag and Au

We study the prospects of using the electric quadrupole transitions from the ground states of Cu, Ag and Au to the metastable state $^2{\rm D}_{5/2}$ as clock transitions in optical lattice clocks. We calculate lifetimes, transition rates, systematic shifts, and demonstrate that the fractional uncertainty of the clocks can be similar to what is achieved in the best current optical clocks. The use of these proposed clocks for the search of new physics, such as time variation of the fine structure constant, search for low-mass scalar dark matter, violation of Local Position Invariance and violation of Lorenz Invariance is discussed.

Theoretical study of electronic structure of erbium and fermium

We use a recently developed version of the configuration method for open shells to study electronic structure of erbium and fermium atoms. We calculate excitation energies of odd states connected to the even ground state by electric dipole transitions, the corresponding transition rates, isotope shift, hyperfine structure, ionization potentials and static scalar polarizabilities. We argue that measuring isotope shift for several transitions can be used to study nuclear deformation in even-even nuclei. This is important for testing nuclear theory and for searching for the hypothetical island of stability. Since erbium and fermium have similar electronic structures, calculations for erbium serve as a guide to the accuracy of the calculations.

Calculations of the atomic structure for the low-lying states of actinium

We employ a technique that combines the configuration interaction method with the singles-doubles coupled-cluster method to perform calculation of the energy levels, transition amplitudes, lifetimes, g-factors, and magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole hyperfine structure constants for many low-lying states of neutral actinium. We find very good agreement with existing experimental energy levels and make accurate predictions for missing levels. It has been noted that some of the levels have been previously misidentified; our analysis supports this claim. If spectroscopy is performed with actinium-225, our calculations will lead to values for nuclear structure constants. The accuracy of this can be constrained by comparing with actinium-227.

Electric dipole moments of atoms and molecules produced by enhanced nuclear Schiff moments

We perform calculations of the CP-violating atomic and molecular electric dipole moments (EDM) induced by the interaction of the nuclear Schiff moments with electrons. EDM of atoms Eu, Dy, Gd, Ac, Th, Pa, U, Np and Pu are of special interest since they have isotopes with strongly enhanced nuclear Schiff moments caused by the octupole nuclear deformation or soft octupole vibration mode. These atoms have open 4f or 5f shells making the calculations complicated. We use our special version of the configuration interaction method combined with the many-body perturbation theory method adopted for open f-shell case. To validate the method we perform similar calculations for simpler atoms (Xe, Hg, Tl+, Pb, Pb++, Rn, Ra) where some earlier results are available. In addition we present the estimates of the CP-violating nuclear spin - molecular axis interaction constants for molecules which may be of experimental interest including AcF, EuN, ThO, PbO and TlF. We also present updated values of the nuclear Schiff moments and atomic and molecular EDM expressed in terms of the CP-violating pi-meson - nucleon interaction constants g_0,g_1, g_2, QCD parameter theta and quark chromo-EDMs. The results may be used to test CP-violation theories and search for axion dark matter in atomic, molecular and solid state experiments.

Using isotope shift for testing nuclear theory: the case of nobelium isotopes

We calculate field isotope shifts for nobelium atoms using nuclear charge distributions which come from different nuclear models. We demonstrate that comparing calculated isotope shifts with experiment can serve as a testing ground for nuclear theories. It also provides a way of extracting parameters of nuclear charge distribution beyond nuclear RMS radius, e.g. parameter of quadrupole deformation $β$. We argue that previous interpretation of the isotope measurements in terms of $δ\langle r^2 \rangle$ between $^{252,254}$No isotopes should be amended when nuclear deformation is taken into account. We calculate isotope shifts for other known isotopes and for hypothetically metastable isotope $^{286}$No for which the predictions of nuclear models differ substantially.

Atomic and molecular transitions induced by axions via oscillating nuclear moments

The interaction of standard model's particles with the axionic Dark Matter field may generate oscillating nuclear electric dipole moments (EDMs), oscillating nuclear Schiff moments and oscillating nuclear magnetic quadrupole moments (MQMs) with a frequency corresponding to the axion's Compton frequency. Within an atom or a molecule an oscillating EDM, Schiff moment or MQM can drive transitions between atomic or molecular states. The excitation events can be detected, for example, via subsequent fluorescence or photoionization. Here we calculate the rates of such transitions. If the nucleus has octupole deformation or quadrupole deformation then the transition rate due to Schiff moment and MQM can be up to $10^{-16}$ transition per molecule per year. In addition, an MQM-induced transition may be of M2-type, which is useful for the elimination of background noise since M2-type transitions are suppressed for photons.

Time- and parity-violating effects of nuclear Schiff moment in molecules and solids

We show that existing calculations of the interaction between nuclear Schiff moments and electrons in molecules use an inaccurate operator which gives rise to significant errors. By comparing the matrix elements of the accurate and imprecise Schiff moment operators, we calculated the correction factor as a function of the nuclear charge Z and presented corrected results for the T,P-violating interaction of the nuclear spin with the molecular axis in the TlF, RaO, PbO, TlCN, ThO, AcF molecules and in the ferroelectric solid PbTiO$_3$.

Electric field on nucleus due to phonon lattice oscillations in solid states

In atoms and molecules, the electrons screen the nucleus from the external electric field. However, if the frequency of the electric field reaches the energy of atomic or molecular transition, the electric field at the nucleus may be resonantly enhanced by many orders in magnitude. In this paper, we study the mechanisms of screening or enhancement of electric field acting on the nuclei in solid states. We show that in dielectric crystals the phonon oscillations of the lattice play crucial role for determining the electric field on nuclei in the MHz-THz region. As an application, we propose an experimental scheme for measuring nuclear electric dipole moment in a solid state based on the coherent excitation of acoustic phonons.

Oscillating nuclear electric dipole moment induced by axion dark matter produces atomic and molecular EDM

According to the Schiff theorem nuclear electric dipole moment (EDM) is completely shielded in a neutral atom by electrons. This makes a static nuclear electric dipole moment (EDM) unobservable. Interaction with the axion dark matter field generates nuclear EDM $d=d_0 \cos (ωt)$ oscillating with the frequency $ω= m_a c^2/\hbar$ . This EDM generates atomic EDM proportional to $ω^2$. This effect is strongly enhanced in molecules since nuclei move slowly and do not produce as efficient screening of oscillating nuclear EDM as electrons do. An additional strong enhancement comes due to a small energy interval between rotational molecular levels. Finally, if the nuclear EDM oscillation frequency is in resonance with a molecular transition, there may be a significant resonance enhancement.

Electron-interacting dark matter: Implications from DAMA/LIBRA-phase2 and prospects for liquid xenon detectors and NaI detectors

We investigate the possibility for the direct detection of low mass (GeV scale) WIMP dark matter in scintillation experiments. Such WIMPs are typically too light to leave appreciable nuclear recoils, but may be detected via their scattering off atomic electrons. In particular, the DAMA Collaboration [R. Bernabei et al., Nucl. Phys. At. Energy 19, 307 (2018)] has recently presented strong evidence of an annual modulation in the scintillation rate observed at energies as low as 1 keV. Despite a strong enhancement in the calculated event rate at low energies, we find that an interpretation in terms of electron-interacting WIMPs cannot be consistent with existing constraints. We also demonstrate the importance of correct treatment of the atomic wavefunctions, and show the resulting event rate is very sensitive to the low-energy performance of the detectors, meaning it is crucial that the detector uncertainties be taken into account. Finally, we demonstrate that the potential scintillation event rate can be much larger than may otherwise be expected, meaning that competitive searches can be performed for GeV scale WIMPs using the conventional prompt S1 scintillation signals. This is important given the recent and upcoming very large liquid xenon detectors.

Enhanced nuclear Schiff moment in stable and metastable nuclei

Nuclei with static intrinsic octupole deformation or a soft octupole vibrational mode lead to strongly enhanced collective nuclear Schiff? moments. Interaction between electrons and these Schiff moments produce enhanced time reversal (T) and parity (P) violating electric dipole moments (EDM) in atoms and molecules. Corresponding experiments may be used to test CP-violation theories predicting T,P-violating nuclear forces and to search for axions. Nuclear octupole deformations are predicted in many short lived isotopes. This paper investigates octupole deformations in stable and very long lifetime nuclei such as 153Eu, 235U, 237Np and 227Ac, which can ease atomic experiments substantially. The estimates of the enhanced Schiff? moments, atomic electric dipole momentsand T, P-odd interaction constants in molecules containing these nuclei are presented.
