Spin Transfer in Exclusive Lambda Production from pp Collisions at 3.67 GeV/c

We report the first polarization transfer measurements for exclusive hyperon production reactions. The normal spin transfer coefficient DNN for pp -> p K+ Lambda is large and negative for forward Lambda production at a beam momentum of 3.67 GeV/c, a result qualitatively consistent with expectations for a mechanism dominated by kaon-exchange and rescattering. The sign of DNN is opposite to that observed in the fragmentation regime for inclusive Lambda production at much higher energies.

Asymmetric Cellular Automaton Modeling Earthquakes

We propose an asymmetric modification of the sand-pile-like cellular automaton for earthquake modeling. The cumulative event distribution is shown to be dependent on the asymmetry parameter.

Burridge-Knopoff model and self-similarity

The seismic processes are well known to be self-similar in both spatial and temporal behavior. At the same time, the Burridge-Knopoff (BK) model of earthquake fault dynamics, one of the basic models of theoretical seismicity, does not posses self-similarity. In this article an extension of BK model, which directly accounts for the self-similarity of earth crust elastic properties by introducing nonlinear terms for inter-block springs of BK model, is presented. The phase space analysis of the model have shown it to behave like a system of coupled randomly kicked oscillators. The nonlinear stiffness terms cause the synchronization of collective motion and produce stronger seismic events.
