Nonlinear order parameter oscillations and lattice coupling in strongly-driven charge-density-wave systems

The anharmonic response of charge-density wave (CDW) order to strong laser-pulse perturbations in 1T-TaS_2 and TbTe_3 is investigated by means of a multiple-pump-pulse time-resolved femtosecond optical spectroscopy. We observe remarkable anharmonic effects hitherto undetected in the systems exhibiting collective charge ordering. The efficiency for additional excitation of the amplitude mode by a laser pulse becomes periodically modulated after the mode is strongly excited into a coherently oscillating state. A similar effect is observed also for some other phonons, where the cross-modulation at the amplitude-mode frequency indicates anharmonic interaction of those phonons with the amplitude mode. By analyzing the observed phenomena in the framework of time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory we attribute the effects to the anharmonicity of the mode potentials inherent to the broken symmetry state of the CDW systems.

Phase slip phenomena in superconductors: from ordered to chaotic dynamics

We consider flux penetration to a 2D superconducting cylinder. We show that in the low field limit the kinetics is deterministic. In the strong field limit the dynamics becomes stochastic. Surprisingly the inhomogeneity in the cylinder reduces the level of stochasticity because of the predominance of Kelvin-Helmholtz vortices.

Disentanglement of the electronic and lattice parts of the order parameter in a 1D Charge Density Wave system probed by femtosecond spectroscopy

We report on the high resolution studies of the temperature (T) dependence of the q=0 phonon spectrum in the quasi one-dimensional charge density wave (CDW) compound K0.3MoO3 utilizing time-resolved optical spectroscopy. Numerous modes that appear below Tc show pronounced T-dependences of their amplitudes, frequencies and dampings. Utilizing the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory we show that these modes result from linear coupling of the electronic part of the order parameter to the 2kF phonons, while the (electronic) CDW amplitude mode is overdamped.

Coherent dynamics of macroscopic electronic order through a symmetry-breaking transition

The temporal evolution of systems undergoing symmetry breaking phase transitions (SBTs) is of great fundamental interest not only in condensed matter physics, but extends from cosmology to brain function and finance \cite{topology,Kibble,Eltsov,Finance}. However, the study of such transitions is often hindered by the fact that they are difficult to repeat, or they occur very rapidly. Here we report for the first time on a high-time-resolution study of the evolution of both bosonic and fermionic excitations through a second order electronic charge-ordering SBT in a condensed matter system. Using a new three-pulse femtosecond spectroscopy technique, we periodically quench our model system into the high-symmetry state, detecting hitherto unrecorded coherent aperiodic undulations of the order parameter (OP), critical slowing down of the collective mode, and evolution of the particle-hole gap appearing through the Peierls-BCS mechanism as the system evolves through the transition. Numerical modeling based on Ginzburg-Landau theory is used to reproduce the observations without free parameters. The close analogy with other Higgs potentials in particle physics\cite{Higgs} gives new insight into hitherto unexplored dynamics of both single particle and collective excitations through a SBT. Of particular interest is the observation of spectro-temporal distortions caused by disturbances of the field arising from spontaneous annihilation of topological defects, similar to those discussed by the Kibble-Zurek cosmological model.

Electron-phonon coupling and charge gap in spin-density-wave iron-pnictides from quasiparticle relaxation dynamics

We investigate the quasiparticle relaxation and low-energy electronic structure in undoped SrFe_2As_2 exhibiting spin-density wave (SDW) ordering using optical pump-probe femtosecond spectroscopy. A remarkable critical slowing down of the quasiparticle relaxation dynamics at the SDW transition temperature T_SDW = 200K is observed. From temperature dependence of the transient reflectivity amplitude we determine the SDW-state charge gap magnitude, 2Delta_SDW/k_BT_SDW=7.2+-1. The second moment of the Eliashberg function, lambda<(hbar omega)^2>=110+-10meV^2, determined from the relaxation time above T_SDW, is similar to SmFeAsO and BaFe_2As_2 indicating a rather small electron phonon coupling constant unless the electron-phonon spectral function (alpha^2F(omega) is strongly enhanced in the low-energy phonon region.

Quasiparticle relaxation dynamics in spin-density-wave and superconducting SmFeAsO_{1-x}F_{x} single crystals

We investigate the quasiparticle relaxation and low-energy electronic structure in undoped SmFeAsO and near-optimally doped SmFeAsO_{0.8}F_{0.2} single crystals - exhibiting spin-density wave (SDW) ordering and superconductivity respectively - using pump-probe femtosecond spectroscopy. In the undoped single crystals a single relaxation process is observed, showing a remarkable critical slowing down of the QP relaxation dynamics at the SDW transition temperature T_{SDW}\simeq125{K}. In the superconducting (SC) crystals multiple relaxation processes are present, with distinct SC state quasiparticle recombination dynamics exhibiting a BCS-like T-dependent superconducting gap, and a pseudogap (PG)-like feature with an onset above 180K indicating the existence of a pseudogap of magnitude 2Δ_{\mathrm{PG}}\simeq120 meV above T_{\mathrm{c}}. From the pump-photon energy dependence we conclude that the SC state and PG relaxation channels are independent, implying the presence of two separate electronic subsystems. We discuss the data in terms of spatial inhomogeneity and multi-band scenarios, finding that the latter is more consistent with the present data.

Hot electron relaxation in a heavy fermion system with tuned doping

Femtosecond time-resolved optical spectroscopy was used to systematically study photoexcited carrier relaxation dynamics in the intermediate-valence heavy fermion system Yb1-xLuxAl3 (0 < x < 1). Given the demonstrated sensitivity of this experimental technique to the presence of the low energy gaps in the charge excitation spectrum, the aim of this work was to study the effect of dilution of the Kondo lattice on its low energy electronic structure. The results imply that in Yb1-xLuxAl3 the hybridization gap, resulting from hybridization of local moments and conduction electrons, persists up to 30% doping. Interestingly, below some characteristic, doping dependent temperature T*(x) the relaxation time divergence, governed by the relaxation bottleneck due to the presence of the indirect hybridization gap, is truncated. This observation is attributed to the competing ballistic transport of hot electrons out of the probed volume at low temperatures. The derived theoretical model accounts for both the functional form of relaxation dynamics below T*(x), as well as the doping dependence of the low temperature relaxation rate in Yb1-xLuxAl3.

Multiple phase slips phenomena in mesoscopic superconducting rings

We investigate the behavior of a mesoscopic one-dimensional ring in an external magnetic field by simulating the time dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations with periodic boundary conditions. We analyze the stability and the different possible evolutions for the phase slip phenomena starting from a metastable state. We find a stability condition relating the winding number of the initial solution and the number of flux quanta penetrating the ring. The analysis of multiple phase slips solutions is based on analytical results and simulations. The role of the ratio of two characteristic times u is studied for the case of a multiple phase slips transition. We found out that if u>>1, consecutive multiple phase slips will be more favorable than simultaneous ones. If u<<1 the opposite is true and we confirm that u>>1 is often a necessary condition to reach the ground state. The influence of the Langevin noise on the kinetics of the phase transition is discussed.

Electron relaxation in metals: Theory and exact analytical solutions

The non-equilibrium dynamics of electrons is of a great experimental and theoretical value providing important microscopic parameters of the Coulomb and electron-phonon interactions in metals and other cold plasmas. Because of the mathematical complexity of collision integrals theories of electron relaxation often rely on the assumption that electrons are in a "quasi-equilibrium" (QE) with a time-dependent temperature, or on the numerical integration of the time-dependent Boltzmann equation. We transform the integral Boltzmann equation to a partial differential Schroedinger-like equation with imaginary time in a one-dimensional "coordinate" space reciprocal to energy which allows for exact analytical solutions in both cases of electron-electron and electron-phonon relaxation. The exact relaxation rates are compared with the QE relaxation rates at high and low temperatures.

Distinct pseudogap and superconducting state quasiparticle relaxation dynamics in near-optimally doped SmFeAsO0.8F0.2 single crystals

We use femtosecond spectroscopy to investigate the quasiparticle relaxation and low-energy electronic structure in a near-optimally doped pnictide superconductor with T_c=49.5 K. Multiple relaxation processes are evident, with distinct superconducting state quasiparticle (QP) recombination dynamics exhibiting a T-dependent superconducting (SC) gap, and a clear "pseudogap" (PG) -like feature with an onset around 200K indicating the existence of a temperature-independent gap of magnitude Δ_PG= 61 +- 9 meV above T_c. Both the SC and PG components show saturation as a function of fluence with distinct saturation thresholds ~0.15 \muJ/cm^2 and 1.5 \muJ/cm^2, respectively.

Fine structure in the electronic density of states of Al-Ni-Co decagonal quasicrystal from ultrafast time-resolved optical reflectivity

We measured the temperature and fluence dependence of the time-resolved photoinduced optical reflectivity in a decagonal Al_{71.9}Ni_{11.1}Co_{17.0} quasicrystal. We find no evidence for the relaxation of a hot thermalized electron gas as observed in metals. Instead, a quick diffusion of the hot nonthermal carries ~40 nm into the bulk is detected enhanced by the presence of a broad ~1 eV pseudogap. From the relaxation dynamics we find an evidence for the presence of a fine structure in the electronic density of states around ~13 meV from the Fermi energy. The structure is related to a weak bottleneck for the carrier relaxation observed at low temperatures.

Low-temperature proximity effect in clean metals

Theories of proximity effect in layered superconductor-normal metal structures usually deal with a hypothetic normal metal with no interaction between electrons and with finite temperatures often close to the superconductor critical temperature. We present an asymptotic solution of the Gor'kov equations in the opposite low-temperature limit for a clean normal metal with a repulsive interaction between electrons. The order parameter in the metal exhibits a power-law decay, Delta(x) is proportional to 1/x, as a function of the distance from the SN boundary, x, with a proximity length strongly depending on the repulsive interaction.

Controlled vaporization of the superconducting condensate in cuprate superconductors sheds light on the pairing boson

We use ultrashort intense laser pulses to study superconducting state vaporization dynamics in La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO4 (x=0.1 and 0.15) on the femtosecond timescale. We find that the energy density required to vaporize the superconducting state is 2+- 0.8 K/Cu and 2.6 +- 1 K/Cu for x=0.1 and 0.15 respectively. This is significantly greater than the condensation energy density, indicating that the quasiparticles share a large amount of energy with the boson glue bath on this timescale. Considering in detail both spin and lattice energy relaxation pathways which take place on the relevant timescale of picoseconds, we rule out purely spin-mediated pair-breaking in favor of phonon-mediated mechanisms, effectively ruling out spin-mediated pairing in cuprates as a consequence.

Magnetic quantum oscillations in doped antiferromagnetic insulators

Energy spectrum of electrons (holes) doped into a two-dimensional antiferromagnetic insulator is quantized in an external magnetic field of arbitrary direction. A peculiar dependence of de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) or Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) magneto-oscillation amplitudes on the azimuthal in-plane angle from the magnetization direction and on the polar angle from the out-of-plane direction is found, which can be used as a sensitive probe of the antiferromagnetic order in doped Mott-Hubbard, spin-density wave (SDW), and conventional band-structure insulators.

Localized charged states and phase separation near second order phase transition

Localized charged states and phase segregation are described in the framework of the phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau theory of phase transitions. The Coulomb interactions determines the charge distribution and the characteristic length of the phase separated states. The phase separation with charge segregation becomes possible because of the large dielectric constant and the small density of extra charge in the range of charge localization. The phase diagram is calculated and the energy gain of the phase separated state is estimated. The role of the Coulomb interaction is elucidated.

The Shubnikov-de Haas effect in multiband quasi-two dimensional metals

We analyze the behavior of the longitudinal conductivity $σ_{zz}$ in a field perpendicular to the highly conducting plane of a quasi-2D {\em multiband} metal in the case of closed system and open systems where $τ$ is fixed, $τ$ oscillates due to intra-band scattering and $τ$ oscillates due to inter-band scattering. In all but one case, we find that there are also mixing frequencies present -- however they exhibit different qualitative behaviors, as befits their different origins, and in the case of inter-band scattering in an opensystem, may in fact be absent in the dHvA oscillations of that system.

Triplet pairing and upper critical field in the mixed state of d-wave superconductors

We show that an additional triplet component of the order parameter is generated in the vortex phase of the d-wave superconductor. Spatial variations of the triplet component are analyzed for a strong spin-orbit coupling. Corrections to the London equation and an unusual temperature dependence of the upper critical field, are obtained in the case of the weak spin-orbit coupling.

Interplay of size and Landau quantizations in the de Haas-van Alphen oscillations of metallic nanowires

We examine the interplay between size quantization and Landau quantization in the De Haas-Van Alphen oscillations of clean, metallic nanowires in a longitudinal magnetic field for `hard' boundary conditions, i.e. those of an infinite round well, as opposed to the `soft' parabolically confined boundary conditions previously treated in Alexandrov and Kabanov (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 95}, 076601 (2005) (AK)). We find that there exist {\em two} fundamental frequencies as opposed to the one found in bulk systems and the three frequencies found by AK with soft boundary counditions. In addition, we find that the additional `magic resonances' of AK may be also observed in the infinite well case, though they are now damped. We also compare the numerically generated energy spectrum of the infinite well potential with that of our analytic approximation, and compare calculations of the oscillatory portions of the thermodynamic quantities for both models.
