Solitary Waves Under the Competition of Linear and Nonlinear Periodic Potentials

In this paper, we study the competition of linear and nonlinear lattices and its effects on the stability and dynamics of bright solitary waves. We consider both lattices in a perturbative framework, whereby the technique of Hamiltonian perturbation theory can be used to obtain information about the existence of solutions, and the same approach, as well as eigenvalue count considerations, can be used to obtained detailed conditions about their linear stability. We find that the analytical results are in very good agreement with our numerical findings and can also be used to predict features of the dynamical evolution of such solutions.

Delocalizing transition in one-dimensional condensates in optical lattices due to inhomogeneous interactions

It is shown that inhomogeneous nonlinear interactions in a Bose-Einstein condensate loaded in an optical lattice can result in delocalizing transition in one dimension, what sharply contrasts to the known behavior of discrete and periodic systems with homogeneous nonlinearity. The transition can be originated either by decreasing the amplitude of the linear periodic potential or by the change of the mean value of the periodic nonlinearity. The dynamics of the delocalizing transition is studied.

Acceleration and localization of matter in a ring trap

A toroidal trap combined with external time-dependent electric field can be used for implementing different dynamical regimes of matter waves. In particular, we show that dynamical and stochastic acceleration, localization and implementation of the Kapitza pendulum can be originated by means of proper choice of the external force.

Mixed symmetry localized modes and breathers in binary mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

We study localized modes in binary mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates embedded in one-dimensional optical lattices. We report a diversity of asymmetric modes and investigate their dynamics. We concentrate on the cases where one of the components is dominant, i.e. has much larger number of atoms than the other one, and where both components have the numbers of atoms of the same order but different symmetries. In the first case we propose a method of systematic obtaining the modes, considering the "small" component as bifurcating from the continuum spectrum. A generalization of this approach combined with the use of the symmetry of the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations allows obtaining breather modes, which are also presented.

Localized modes in arrays of boson-fermion mixtures

It is shown that the mean-field description of a boson-fermion mixture with a dominating fermionic component, loaded in a one-dimensional optical lattice, is reduced to the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a periodic potential and periodic nonlinearity. In such system there exist localized modes having peculiar properties. In particular, for some regions of parameters there exists a lower bound for a number of atoms necessary for creation of a mode, while for other domains small amplitude gap solitons are not available in vicinity of either of the gap edges. We found that the lowest branch of the symmetric solution may either exist only for a restricted range of energies in a gap or does not exist, unlike in pure bosonic condensates. The simplest bifurcations of the modes are shown and stability of the modes is verified numerically.

Stationary localized modes in the quintic nonlinear Schrodinger equation with a periodic potential

We consider the localized modes (bright solitons) described by one-dimensional quintic nonlinear Schrodinger equation with a periodic potential. In the case of attractive nonlinearity we deduce sufficient conditions for collapse. We show that there exist spatially localized modes with arbitrarily large number of particles. We study such solutions in the semi-infinite gap (attractive case) and in the first gap (attractive and repulsive cases), and show that a nonzero minimum value of the number of particles is necessary for a localized mode to be created. In the limit of large negative frequencies (attractive case) we observe "quantization" of the number of particles of the stationary modes. Such solutions can be interpreted as coupled "Townes" solitons and appear to be stable. The modes in the first gap have numbers of particles infinitely growing with frequencies approaching one of the gap edges, which is explained by the power decay of the modes. Stability of the localized modes is discussed.

Defect modes of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice with a localized impurity

We study defect modes of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice with a localized defect within the framework of the one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation. It is shown that for a significant range of parameters the defect modes can be accurately described by an expansion over Wannier functions, whose envelope is governed by the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a delta-impurity. The stability of the defect modes is verified by direct numerical simulations of the underlying Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a periodic plus defect potentials. We also discuss possibilities of driving defect modes through the lattice and suggest ideas for their experimental generation.

Nature of intrinsic relation between Bloch-band tunneling and modulational instability

On examples of Bose-Einstein condensates embedded in two-dimensional optical lattices we show that in nonlinear periodic systems modulational instability and inter-band tunneling are intrinsically related phenomena. By direct numerical simulations we found that tunneling results in attenuation or enhancement of instability. On the other hand, instability results in asymmetric nonlinear tunneling. The effect strongly depends on the band gap structure and it is especially significant in the case of the resonant tunneling. The symmetry of the coherent structures emerging from the instability reflects the symmetry of both the stable and the unstable states between which the tunneling occurs. Our results provide an evidence of profound effect of the band structure on superfluid-insulator transition.

Dark solitons as quasiparticles in trapped condensates

We present a theory of dark soliton dynamics in trapped quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates, which is based on the local density approximation. The approach is applicable for arbitrary polynomial nonlinearities of the mean-field equation governing the system as well as to arbitrary polynomial traps. In particular, we derive a general formula for the frequency of the soliton oscillations in confining potentials. A special attention is dedicated to the study of the soliton dynamics in adiabatically varying traps. It is shown that the dependence of the amplitude of oscillations {\it vs} the trap frequency (strength) is given by the scaling law $X_0\proptoω^{-γ}$ where the exponent $γ$ depends on the type of the two-body interactions, on the exponent of the polynomial confining potential, on the density of the condensate and on the initial soliton velocity. Analytical results obtained within the framework of the local density approximation are compared with the direct numerical simulations of the dynamics, showing remarkable match. Various limiting cases are addressed. In particular for the slow solitons we computed a general formula for the effective mass and for the frequency of oscillations.

Solitons of Bose-Fermi mixtures in a strongly elongated trap

It is shown that a Bose-Fermi mixture of a degenerate gas of spin-polarized fermions, whose number significantly exceeds the number of bosons, embedded in a strongly anisotropic trap, is described by the one-dimensional coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equation for the boson component and the wave equation with external source for the fermion component. Depending on the type of boson-fermion interaction, the system may display modulational instability and the existence of solitons in the fermion and boson components respectively. Such solitons represent either a local decrease (increase) of the density of both the components or a decrease of the density in one component and an increase of the density in the other component. It is shown that the type of the effective interactions can be easily managed by varying the trap geometry or by means of Feshbach resonance.

Effected of Feshbach resonance on dynamics of matter waves in optical lattices

Mean-filed dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) loaded in an optical lattice (OL), confined by a parabolic potentials, and subjected to change of a scattering length by means of the Feshbach resonance (FR), is considered. The system is described by the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation with varying nonlinearity, which in a number of cases can be reduced a one-dimensional perturbed nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation. A particular form of the last one depends on relations among BEC parameters. We describe periodic solutions of the NLS equation and their adiabatic dynamics due to varying nonlinearity; carry out numerical study of the dynamics of the NLS equation with periodic and parabolic trap potentials. We pay special attention to processes of generation of trains of bright and dark matter solitons from initially periodic waves.

Driving defect modes of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

We present an approximate analytical theory and direct numerical computation of defect modes of a Bose-Einstein condensate loaded in an optical lattice and subject to an additional localized (defect) potential. Some of the modes are found to be remarkably stable and can be driven along the lattice by means of a defect moving following a step-like function defined by the period of Josephson oscillations and the macroscopic stability of the atoms.

Stable and unstable vector dark solitons of coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations. Application to two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

Dynamics of vector dark solitons in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates is studied within the framework of the coupled one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations. We consider the small amplitude limit in which the coupled NLS equations are reduced to the coupled Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equations. For a specific choice of the parameters the obtained coupled KdV equations are exactly integrable. We find that there exist two branches of (slow and fast) dark solitons corresponding to the two branches of the sound waves. Slow solitons, corresponding to the lower branch of the acoustic wave appear to be unstable and transform during the evolution into the stable fast solitons (corresponding to the upper branch of the dispersion law). Vector dark solitons of arbitrary depths are studied numerically. It is shown that effectively different parabolic traps, to which the two components are subjected, cause instability of the solitons leading to splitting of their components and subsequent decay. Simple phenomenological theory, describing oscillations of vector dark solitons in a magnetic trap is proposed.

On localized solutions of discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation. An exact result

Local and global existence of localized solutions of a discrete nonlinear Schrodinger (DNLS) equation, with arbitrary on-site nonlinearity, is proved. In particular, it is shown that an initially localized excitation persists localized during infinite time. Moreover, if initial localization is stronger than |n|^{-d} with any power d, it maintains itself as such during infinite time. The results are generalized to various types of inter-side and saturable nonlinearities, to lattices with long range interactions, as well as DNLS with dissipation.

On collapse in the nonlinear Schrodinger equation with time dependent nonlinearity. Application to Bose-Einstein condensates

It is proven that periodically varying and sign definite nonlinearity in a general case does not prevent collapse in two- and three-dimensional nonlinear Schrodinger equations: at any oscillation frequency of the nonlinearity blowing up solutions exist. Contrary to the results known for a sign alternating nonlinearity, increase of the frequency of oscillations accelerates collapse. The effect is discussed from the viewpoint of scaling arguments. For the three-dimensional case a sufficient condition for existence of collapse is rigorously established. The results are discussed in the context of the meanfield theory of Bose-Einstein condensates with time dependent scattering length.

Theory of Nonlinear Matter Waves in Optical Lattices

We consider several effects of the matter wave dynamics which can be observed in Bose-Einstein condensates embedded into optical lattices. For low-density condensates we derive approximate evolution equations, the form of which depends on relation among the main spatial scales of the system. Reduction of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation to a lattice model (the tight-binding approximation) is also presented. Within the framework of the obtained models we consider modulational instability of the condensate, solitary and periodic matter waves, paying special attention to different limits of the solutions, i.e. to smooth movable gap solitons and to strongly localized discrete modes. We also discuss how the Feshbach resonance, a linear force, and lattice defects affect the nonlinear matter waves.

On the modulational stability of Gross-Pitaevskii type equations in 1+1 dimensions

The modulational stability of the nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger (NLS) equation is examined in the case with a quadratic external potential. This study is motivated by recent experimental studies in the context of matter waves in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). The theoretical analysis invokes a lens-type transformation that converts the Gross-Pitaevskii into a regular NLS equation with an additional growth term. This analysis suggests the particular interest of a specific time-varying potential ((t+t*)^{-2}). We examine both this potential, as well as the time independent one numerically and conclude by suggesting experiments for the production of solitonic wave-trains in BEC.

Dynamics of matter solitons in weakly modulated optical lattices

It is shown that matter solitons can be effectively managed by means of smooth variations of parameters of optical lattices in which the condensate is loaded. The phenomenon is based on the effect of lattice modulations on the carrier wave transporting the soliton and that is why is well understood in terms of the effective mass approach, where a particular spatial configuration of the band structure is of primary importance. Linear, parabolic, and spatially localized modulations are considered as the case examples. It is shown that these defects can originate accelerating and oscillating motion of matter solitons as well as simulate soliton interaction with attractive and repulsive defects.
