Influence of gallium content on Ga3+ position and photo- and thermally stimulated luminescence in Ce3+ - doped multicomponent (Y,Lu,)3GaxAl5-xO12 garnets

Photoluminescence, thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL) and EPR characteristics of the Ce3+ doped single crystals of multicomponent Y1Lu2GaxAl5-xO12 and Lu3GaxAl5-xO12 garnets with different Ga contents (x = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) excited in the Ce3+ - related absorption bands are investigated in the 9 - 500 K temperature range. The distribution of Ga3+ and Al3+ ions in the crystal lattice is determined by the NMR method. The relative number of Ga3+ ions in the tetrahedral crystal lattice sites, the maxima positions of the TSL glow curve peaks and the corresponding trap depths are found to decrease linearly with the increasing Ga content. At the same time, the reduction of the activation energy Ea of the TSL glow curve peaks creation under irradiation in the 4f - 4d1 absorption band of Ce3+ is strongly nonlinear. To explain this effect, the suggestion is made that Ea is the energy distance between the excited 5d1 level of Ce3+ and a defect level located between the 5d1 level and the bottom of the conduction band and arising from the Ga3+ ion perturbed by the nearest neighboring Ce3+ ion. The electrons thermally released from the excited Ce3+ ions are suggested to be trapped at the perturbed Ga3+ ions resulting in the appearance of electron Ga2+ centers. In spite of the fact that the paramagnetic Ga2+ ions were not detected by EPR, the described above process was found for Fe3+ impurity ions, namely the electron transfer from the 5d1 excited levels of Ce3+ to Fe3+ was directly detected by EPR.

Magnetic resonance study of bulk and thin film EuTiO3

Magnetic resonance spectra of EuTiO3 in both bulk and thin film form were taken at temperatures from 3-350 K and microwave frequencies from 9.2-9.8 and 34 GHz. In the paramagnetic phase, magnetic resonance spectra are determined by magnetic dipole and exchange interactions between Eu2+ spins. In the film, a large contribution arises from the demagnetization field. From detailed analysis of the linewidth and its temperature dependence, the parameters of spin-spin interactions were determined: the exchange frequency is 15-15.5 GHz and the estimated critical exponent of the spin correlation length is ~ 0.5. In the bulk samples, the spectra exhibited a distinct minimum in the linewidth at the Néel temperature, T_N = 5.5 K, while the resonance field practically does not change even on cooling below T_N. This is indicative of a small magnetic anisotropy ~ 320 G in the antiferromagnetic phase. In the film, the magnetic resonance spectrum is split below T_N into several components due to excitation of the magnetostatic modes, corresponding to a non-uniform precession of magnetization. Moreover, the film was observed to degrade over two years. This was manifested by an increase of defects and a change in the domain structure. The saturated magnetization in the film, estimated from the magnetic resonance spectrum, was about 900 emu/cm3 or 5.5 mu_B/unit cell at T = 3.5 K.

Magnetoelectric effect in antiferromagnetic multiferroic Pb(Fe1/2Nb1/2)O3 and its solid solutions with PbTiO3

Antiferromagnets (AFMs) are presently considered as promising materials for applications in spintronics and random access memories due to the robustness of information stored in AFM state against perturbing magnetic fields (P. Wadley et al., Science 351, 587 (2016)). In this respect, AFM multiferroics maybe attractive alternatives for conventional AFMs as the coupling of magnetism with ferroelectricity (magnetoelectric effect) offers an elegant possibility of electric field control and switching of AFM domains. Here we report the results of comprehensive experimental and theoretical investigations of the quadratic magnetoelectric (ME) effect in single crystals and high-resistive ceramics of Pb(Fe1/2Nb1/2)O3 (PFN) and (1- x)Pb(Fe1/2Nb1/2)O3xPbTiO3 (PFNxPT). We are interested primarily in the temperature range of multiferroic phase, T < 150 K, where the ME coupling coefficient is extremely large (as compared to well-known multiferroic BiFeO3) and shows sign reversal at paramagnetic-to-antiferromagnetic phase transition. Moreover, we observe strong ME response nonlinearity in the AFM phase in the magnetic fields of only few kOe. To describe the temperature and magnetic field dependencies of the above unusual features of ME effect in PFN and PFN-xPT, we use simple phenomenological Landau approach which explains experimental data surprisingly well. Our ME measurements demonstrate that the electric field of only 20-25 kV/cm is able to switch the AFM domains and align them with ferroelectric ones even in PFN ceramic samples.

Cluster superconductivity in the magnetoelectric Pb(Fe1/2Sb1/2)O3 ceramics

We report the observation of cluster (local) superconductivity in the magnetoelectric Pb(Fe1/2Sb1/2)O3 ceramics prepared at a hydrostatic pressure of 6 GPa and temperatures 1200-1800 K to stabilize the perovskite phase. The superconductivity is manifested by an abrupt drop of the magnetic susceptibility at the critical temperature TC 7 K. Both the magnitude of this drop and TC decrease with magnetic field increase. Similarly, the low-field paramagnetic absorption measured by EPR spectrometer drops significantly below TC as well. The observed effects and their critical magnetic field dependence are interpreted as manifestation of the superconductivity and Meissner effect in metallic Pb nanoclusters existing in the ceramics. Their volume fraction and average size were estimated as 0.1-0.2% and 140-150 nm, respectively. The superconductivity related effects disappear after oxidizing annealing of the ceramics.

Transversal spin freezing and re-entrant spin glass phase in chemically disordered Fe-contained double perovskite multiferroics

We propose experimental verification and theoretical explanation of magnetic anomalies in the complex Fe-contained double perovskite multiferroics like PbFe$_{1/2}$Nb$_{1/2}$O$_3$. The theoretical part is based on our model of coexistence of long-range magnetic order and spin glass in the above substances. In our model, the exchange interaction is anisotropic, coupling antiferromagnetically $z$ spin components of Fe$^{3+}$ ions. At the same time, the $xy$ components are coupled by much weaker exchange interaction of ferromagnetic sign. In the system with spatial disorder (half of corresponding lattice cites are occupied by spinless Nb$^{5+}$ ions) such frustrating interaction results in the fact that antiferromagnetic order is formed by $z$ projection of the spins, while their $xy$ components contribute to spin glass behaviour. Our theoretical findings are supported by the experimental evidence of coexistence of antiferromagnetic and spin glass phases in chemically disordered Fe-contained double perovskite multiferroics.

Room-temperature paramagnetoelectric effect in magnetoelectric multiferroics Pb(Fe1/2Nb1/2)O3 and its solid solution with PbTiO3

We have observed the magnetoelectric response at room temperature and above in high-resistive ceramics made of multiferroic Pb(Fe1/2Nb1/2)O3 (PFN) and PFN-based solid solution 0.91PFN-0.09PbTiO3 (PFN-PT). The value of the paramagnetoelectric (PME) coefficient shows a pronounced maximum near the ferroelectric-to-paraelectric phase transition temperature, T_C, and then decreases sharply to zero for T>T_C. The maximal PME coefficient in PFN is about 4x10(-18) s/A. The theoretical description of the PME effect, within the framework of a Landau theory of phase transitions allowing for realistic temperature dependences of spontaneous polarization, dielectric and magnetic susceptibilities, qualitatively reproduces well the temperature dependence of the PME coefficient. In particular, the Landau theory predicts the significant increase of the PME effect at low temperatures and near the temperature of the paraelectric-to-ferroelectric phase transition, since the PME coefficient is equal to the product of the spontaneous polarization, dielectric permittivity, square of magnetic susceptibility and the coefficient quantifying the strength of the biquadratic magnetoelectric coupling

Geometrical origin of ferrimagnetism and superparamagnetism in Fe-based double perovskite multiferroics

We show that a superstructure of antiferromagnetically interacting Fe$^{3+}$ ($S=5/2$) ions in double perovskites AFe$_{1/2}$M$_{1/2}$O$_{3}$ exhibits a ferrimagnetic ordering below $T_{fe} \approx 5.6J_1$ ($J_1/k_B \sim 50$~K), which is close to room temperature. Small clusters of the same structure exhibit a superparamagnetic behavior at $T \lesssim T_{fe}$. The possibility of formation of such clusters explains the room-temperature (superpara)magnetism in 3$d$-metal based oxides.

Magnetic interactions in disordered perovskite PbFe_{1/2}Nb_{1/2}O_3 and related compounds. Dominance of nearest-neighbor interaction

We show that the magnetism of double perovskite AFe_{1/2}M_{1/2}O_3 systems may be described by the Heisenberg model on the simple cubic lattice, where only half of sites are occupied by localized magnetic moments. The nearest-neighbor interaction J_1 is more than 20 times the next-nearest neighbor interaction J_2, the third-nearest interaction along the space diagonal of the cube being negligible. We argue that the variety of magnetic properties observed in different systems is connected with the variety of chemical ordering in them. We analyze six possible types of the chemical ordering in 2x2x2 supercell, and argue that the probability to find them in a real compound does not correspond to a random occupation of lattice sites by magnetic ions. The exchange J_2 rather than J_1 define the magnetic energy scale of most double perovskite compounds that means the enhanced probability of 1:1 short range ordering. Two multiferroic compounds PbFe_{1/2}M_{1/2}O_3 (M=Nb, Ta) are exceptions. We show that the relatively high temperature of antiferromagnetic transition is compatible with a layered short-range chemical order, which was recently shown to be most stable for these two compounds [I. P. Raevski, {\em et al.}, Phys.\ Rev.\ B \textbf{85}, 224412 (2012)]. We show also that one of the types of ordering has ferrimagnetic ground state. The clusters with short-range order of this type may be responsible for a room-temperature superparamagnetism, and may form the cluster glass at low temperatures.

ESR and TSL study of hole capture in PbWO_4:Mo,La and PbWO_4:Mo,Y scintillator crystals

The processes of hole localization in double-doped PbWO_4:Mo,La and PbWO_4:Mo,Y single crystals have been studied by continuous wave and pulse electron spin resonance (ESR) and thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL) methods. We show that the holes created by the UV irradiation are preferably trapped at lattice oxygen ions in the vicinity of perturbing defects such as lead vacancies, impurity ions (La, Y, Mo), and other lattice imperfections. This leads to a variety of O^- centers, which differ both by thermal stability (from about 170 K up to 240 K) and ESR parameters. The hole centers of this type were not observed neither in PbWO_4:Mo nor in PbWO_4:La(Y) crystals. The recombination processes of thermally released holes with electrons stored at different traps, including Pb^+ - WO_3 and (MoO_4)^3- centers, are systematically studied by TSL. Thermal stability parameters are defined by ESR and TSL techniques for different O^- type defects.

Time-resolved spectroscopy of exciton states in single crystals, single crystalline films and powders of YAlO_3 and YAlO_3:Ce

Luminescence characteristics of single crystals (SC), single crystalline films (SCF), powders and ceramics of YAlO_3 and YAlO_3:Ce have been studied at 4.2-300 K under photoexcitation in the 4-20 eV energy range and X-ray excitation. The origin and structure of defects responsible for various exciton-related emission and excitation bands have been identified. The ~5.6 eV emission of YAlO_3 SCF is ascribed to the self-trapped excitons. In YAlO_3 SC, the dominating 5.63 eV and 4.12 eV emissions are ascribed to the excitons localized at the isolated antisite defect Y^{3+}_Al and at the Y^{3+}_{Al} defect associated with the nearest-neighbouring oxygen vacancy, respectively. Thermally stimulated release of electrons, trapped at these defects, takes place at 200 K and 280 K, respectively. The formation energies of various Y^{3+}_{Al}-related defects are calculated. The presence of Y_{Al} antisite-related defects is confirmed by NMR measurements. The influence of various intrinsic and impurity defects on the luminescence characteristics of Ce^{3+} centers is clarified.

Mechanisms of magnetoelectricity in manganese doped incipient ferroelectrics

We report magnetization measurements and magnetic resonance data for SrTiO3 doped by manganese. We show that the recently reported coexistent spin and dipole glass (multiglass) behaviours are strongly affected by the distribution of Mn ions between the Sr and Ti sites. Motivated by this finding we calculate the magnetic interactions between Mn impurities of different kinds. Both LSDA+U and many-body perturbation theory evidence that magnetic and magnetoelectric interactions are mediated by Mn$_B^{4+}$ ions substituting for Ti. We propose two microscopic magnetoelectric coupling mechanisms, which can be involved in all magnetoelectric systems based on incipient ferroelectrics. In the first one, the electric field modifies the spin susceptibility via spin-strain coupling of Mn$_{B}^{4+}$. The second mechanism concerns Mn pairs coupled by the position-dependent exchange interaction.

Electron Spin Resonance investigation of undoped and Li-doped CdWO_4 scintillator crystals

Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra of Fe3+ and Mn2+ ions have been studied in the nominally pure and 0.05% Li-doped single crystals of CdWO4. The zero-field splitting parameters are determined with a high precision for both of the impurities. The result suggest that the Li-doping leads to the increase of the ionic charge of iron from 3+ to 4+ and of manganese, from 1+ to 2+.

Electron spin resonance investigation of Mn^{2+} ions and their dynamics in manganese doped SrTiO_3

Using electron spin resonance, lattice position and dynamic properties of Mn2+ ions were studied in 0.5 and 2 % manganese doped SrTiO3 ceramics prepared by conventional mixed oxide method. The measurements showed that Mn2+ ions substitute preferably up to 97 % for Sr if the ceramics is prepared with a deficit of Sr ions. Motional narrowing of the Mn2+ ESR spectrum was observed when temperature increases from 120 K to 240-250 K that was explained as a manifestation of off-center position of this ion at the Sr site. From the analysis of the ESR spectra the activation energy Ea = 86 mV and frequency factor 1/?0 ? (2-10)x10^(-14) 1/s for jumping of the impurity between symmetrical off-center positions were determined. Both values are in agreement with those derived previously from dielectric relaxation. This proves the origin of dielectric anomalies in SrTiO3:Mn as those produced by the reorientation dynamics of Mn2+ dipoles.

Size effects in radiospectroscopy spectra of ferroelectric nanopowders

The theoretical and experimental investigation of ferroelectric nanopowders is performed. The manifestation in radiospectroscopy spectra of size driven ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition at some critical particle average size was the main goal of the consideration. In theoretical part the size effect for the materials with ferroelectric tetragonal phase and cubic paraelectric phase was considered allowing for the spontaneous polarization inhomogeneity inside a particle and distribution of particle sizes. In ESR the transformation of the spectra from tetragonal symmetry to cubic symmetry with decreasing of nanoparticle sizes was calculated. Measurements of Fe3+ ESR spectra in nanopowder of BaTiO3 were carried out at room temperature. The decrease of intensity of tetragonal symmetry ESR lines of Fe3+ and appearance of cubic symmetry line with asymmetry of the shoulders was observed with the average sizes decrease with complete disappearance of tetragonal spectrum at average size less or equal 40 nm. The comparison of the theory with experiment was carried out. The value of critical size Rc = 40 nm was extracted from ESR data. The asymmetry and broadening of right hand side shoulder of ESR cubic symmetry line was shown to be related to contribution of paramagnetic centers in the vicinity of the particles surface. The deconvolution of the cubic line allowed to show, that this region size is about 3 nm.

NMR comparative study of PbMg_1/3Nb_2/3O_3 and PbSc_1/2Nb_1/2O_3 local structure

The 93Nb and 45Sc NMR spectra in PbSc_1/2Nb_1/2O_3 (PSN) and PbMg_1/3Nb_2/3O_3 (PMN) disordered relaxor ferroelectrics at the temperature T > T_0 (T_0 is the temperature of the dielectric susceptibility maximum) have been studied. Spectra analysis was performed on the base both of the analytical description of NMR lines shapes, allowing for homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening related to a random distribution of the electric field gradients and numerical Monte Carlo method taking into account electric field gradients originated from random distribution of Mg, Sc and Nb ions (which may be shifted or not) over B-type cation sites. The observed 1/2 -1/2 transition spectrum both of the 93Nb and 45Sc nuclei in the PSN was shown to contain a narrow (3-4 kHz) almost isotropic part and a broad strongly anisotropic part. These two components of NMR spectra are related to 1:1 Sc/Nb ordered and compositionally disordered regions of the crystal, respectively. It was shown that in the disordered regions Sc^3+, Nb^5+ and O^2- ions are shifted from their cubic lattice sites at one of three possible directions: <100>, <110> or <111>. In PMN the NMR spectrum of 93Nb contains practically only the broad component. The portion of unbroadened spectrum that may correspond to ideal 1:2 regions accounts only for 1-2 percent of the total integral intensity. No evidance was obtained about existence of the 1:1 regions in PMN. The NMR data demonstrate that in PMN the cubic symmetry at T > T_0 is locally broken due to ions shifts similar to that in disordered PSN. The values of the ion shifts were estimated in the point charges point dipoles approximation of the electric field gradients calculation both in the PSN and PMN.
