3D modelling of accretion disc in eclipsing binary system V1239 Her

We present the results of 3D-hydrodynamical simulations of accretion flow in the eclipsing dwarf nova V1239 Her in quiescence. The model includes the optical star filling its Roche lobe, a gas stream emanating from the inner Lagrangian point of the binary system, and the accretion disc structure. A cold hydrogen gas stream is initially emitted towards a point-like gravitational centre. A stationary accretion disc is formed in about 15 orbital periods after the beginning of accretion. The model takes into account partial ionization of hydrogen and uses realistic cooling function for hydrogen. The light curve of the system is calculated as the volume emission of optically thin layers along the line of sight up to the optical depth τ=2/3 calculated using Planck-averaged opacities. The calculated eclipse light curves show good agreement with observations, with the changing shape of pre-eclipse and post-eclipse light curves being explained entirely due to ~ 50% variations in the mass accretion rate through the gas stream.

Multimodal Remote Sensing Image Registration with Accuracy Estimation at Local and Global Scales

This paper focuses on potential accuracy of remote sensing images registration. We investigate how this accuracy can be estimated without ground truth available and used to improve registration quality of mono- and multi-modal pair of images. At the local scale of image fragments, the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) on registration error is estimated for each local correspondence between coarsely registered pair of images. This CRLB is defined by local image texture and noise properties. Opposite to the standard approach, where registration accuracy is only evaluated at the output of the registration process, such valuable information is used by us as an additional input knowledge. It greatly helps detecting and discarding outliers and refining the estimation of geometrical transformation model parameters. Based on these ideas, a new area-based registration method called RAE (Registration with Accuracy Estimation) is proposed. In addition to its ability to automatically register very complex multimodal image pairs with high accuracy, the RAE method provides registration accuracy at the global scale as covariance matrix of estimation error of geometrical transformation model parameters or as point-wise registration Standard Deviation. This accuracy does not depend on any ground truth availability and characterizes each pair of registered images individually. Thus, the RAE method can identify image areas for which a predefined registration accuracy is guaranteed. The RAE method is proved successful with reaching subpixel accuracy while registering eight complex mono/multimodal and multitemporal image pairs including optical to optical, optical to radar, optical to Digital Elevation Model (DEM) images and DEM to radar cases. Other methods employed in comparisons fail to provide in a stable manner accurate results on the same test cases.

On the dependence of the X-ray continuum variations with luminosity in accreting X-ray pulsars

Using RXTE/ASM archival data, we investigate the behaviour of the spectral hardness ratio as a function of X-ray luminosity in a sample of six transient X-ray pulsars (EXO 2030+375, GX 304-1, 4U 0115+63, V 0332+63, A 0535+26 and MXB 0656-072). In all sources we find that the spectral hardness ratio defined as $F_{5-12\mathrm{keV}}/ F_{1.33-3\mathrm{keV}}$ increases with the ASM flux (1.33--12 keV) at low luminosities and then saturates or even slightly decreases above some critical X-ray luminosity falling into the range $\sim(3-7)\times10^{37}$~erg~s$^{-1}$. Two-dimensional structure of accretion columns in the radiation-diffusion limit is calculated for two possible geometries (filled and hollow cylinder) for mass accretion rates $\dot M$ ranging from $10^{17}$ to 1.2$\times 10^{18}$~g s$^{-1}$. The observed spectral behaviour in the transient X-ray pulsars with increasing $\dot M$ can be reproduced by a Compton saturated sidewall emission from optically thick magnetized accretion columns with taking into account the emission reflected from the neutron star atmosphere. At $\dot M$ above some critical value $\dot M_{cr}\sim (6-8)\times 10^{17}$~g~s$^{-1}$, the hight of the column becomes such that the contribution of the reflected component to the total emission starts decreasing, which leads to the saturation and even slight decrease of the spectral hardness. Hollow-cylinder columns have a smaller height than the filled-cylinder ones, and the contribution of the reflected component in the total emission does not virtually change with $\dot M$ (and hence the hardness of the continuum monotonically increases) up to higher mass accretion rates than $\dot M_{cr}$ for the filled columns.
