Direct observation of the enhanced photonic spin Hall effect in a subwavelength grating supporting surface plasmon resonance

The photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE) in surface plasmon resonance (SPR) structures has great potential for various polarization-sensitive applications and devices. Here, using optical weak measurement, we observe spin-dependent and spin-independent angular shifts of the reflected beam, enhanced by SPR in a subwavelength nickel grating. An enhanced in-plane photonic spin Hall effect manifested in the angular splitting of circularly polarized photons with opposite helicity signs is demonstrated. We theoretically and experimentally demonstrate that angular in-plane shifts can be changed from spin-independent (Goos-Hänchen shift) to spin-dependent (PSHE) when the incident beam polarization state changes. The SPR-induced depolarization of light and the mixing of polarization states are detected. High purity of spin separation and a high degree of circular polarization are achieved with an optimal polarization state (preselection angle) and a resonance angle of incidence. The spineless spatial separation of two orthogonal components of the field with diagonal linear polarizations is demonstrated.

Magnetic quantum ratchet effect in (Cd,Mn)Te- and CdTe-based quantum well structures with a lateral asymmetric superlattice

We report on the observation of magnetic quantum ratchet effect in (Cd,Mn)Te- and CdTe-based quantum well structures with an asymmetric lateral dual grating gate superlattice subjected to an external magnetic field applied normal to the quantum well plane. A dc electric current excited by cw terahertz laser radiation shows 1/B-oscillations with an amplitude much larger as compared to the photocurrent at zero magnetic field. We show that the photocurrent is caused by the combined action of a spatially periodic in-plane potential and the spatially modulated radiation due to the near field effects of light diffraction. Magnitude and direction of the photocurrent are determined by the degree of the lateral asymmetry controlled by the variation of voltages applied to the individual gates. The observed magneto-oscillations with enhanced photocurrent amplitude result from Landau quantization and, for (Cd,Mn)Te at low temperatures, from the exchange enhanced Zeeman splitting in diluted magnetic heterostructures. Theoretical analysis, considering the magnetic quantum ratchet effect in the framework of semiclassical approach, describes quite well the experimental results.

Giant Plasmon Instability in Dual-Grating-Gate Graphene Field-Effect Transistor

We study instability of plasmons in a dual-grating-gate graphene field-effect transistor induced by dc current injection using self-consistent simulations with the Boltzmann equation. With only the acoustic-phonon-limited electron scattering, it is demonstrated that a total growth rate of the plasmon instability, with the terahertz/mid-infrared range of the frequency, can exceed $4\times10^{12}$ s$^{-1}$ at room temperature, which is an order of magnitude larger than in two-dimensional electron gases based on usual semiconductors. By Comparing the simulation results with existing theory, it is revealed that the giant total growth rate originates from simulataneous occurence of the so-called Dyakonov-Shur and Ryzhii-Satou-Shur instabilities.

Terahertz ratchet effects in graphene with a lateral superlattice

Experimental and theoretical studies on ratchet effects in graphene with a lateral superlattice excited by alternating electric fields of terahertz frequency range are presented. A lateral superlatice deposited on top of monolayer graphene is formed either by periodically repeated metal stripes having different widths and spacings or by inter-digitated comb-like dual-grating-gate (DGG) structures. We show that the ratchet photocurrent excited by terahertz radiation and sensitive to the radiation polarization state can be efficiently controlled by the back gate driving the system through the Dirac point as well as by the lateral asymmetry varied by applying unequal voltages to the DGG subgratings. The ratchet photocurrent includes the Seebeck thermoratchet effect as well as the effects of "linear" and "circular" ratchets, sensitive to the corresponding polarization of the driving electromagnetic force. The experimental data are analyzed for the electronic and plasmonic ratchets taking into account the calculated potential profile and the near field acting on carriers in graphene. We show that the photocurrent generation is based on a combined action of a spatially periodic in-plane potential and the spatially modulated light due to the near field effects of the light diffraction.

Noncentrosymmetric plasmon modes and giant terahertz photocurrent in a two-dimensional plasmonic crystal

We introduce and theoretically study the plasmon-photogalvanic effect in the planar noncentrosymmetric plasmonic crystal containing a homogeneous two-dimensional electron system gated by a periodic metal grating with an asymmetric unit cell. The plasmon-photogalvanic DC current arises due to the two-dimensional electron drag by the noncentrosymmetric plasmon modes excited under normal incidence of terahertz radiation. We show that the collective plasmon modes of the planar plasmonic crystal become strongly noncentrosymmetric in the weak coupling regime of their anticrossing. Large plasmon wavevector (which is typically by two-three orders of magnitude greater than the terahertz photon wavevector) along with strong near-field enhancement at the plasmon resonance make the plasmonic drag a much stronger effect compared to the photon drag observed in conventional two-dimensional electron systems.

Understanding of double-curvature shaped magnetoimpedance profiles in Joule-annealed and tensioned microwires at 8-12 GHz

We have investigated for the first time the combined effect of current and stress on the GMI characteristics of vanishing-magnetostrictive Co-rich microwires at microwave frequency. As the current-annealed wire is subject to certain tensile stress, one can observe a drastic transformation of field dependence of MI profiles from smooth shape of a broad peak to deformed shape of a sharp peak with the emergence of a kink on each side. It follows that three different regions- core, inner and outer shell -have been formed by the combined effect of Joule annealing, current generated magnetic field and the tensile stress. A critical field sees a drop of field sensitivity from outer to inner shell and shifts to lower value with increasing annealing current. We successfully adapted our core-shell model to a core-shell-shell model by designating different anisotropy field for each region to satisfactorily resolve the unique double-curvature shaped peaks in the field derivative MI profiles.

Near-Limb Zeeman and Hanle Diagnostics

"Weak" magnetic-field diagnostics in faint objects near the bright solar disk are discussed in terms of the level of non-object signatures, in particular, of the stray light in telescopes. Calculated dependencies of the stray light caused by diffraction at the 0.5-, 1.6-, and 4-meter entrance aperture are presented. The requirements for micro-roughness of refractive and reflective primary optics are compared. Several methods for reducing the stray light (the Lyot coronagraphic technique, multiple stages of apodizing in the focal and exit pupil planes, apodizing in the entrance aperture plane with a special mask), and reducing the random and systematic errors are noted. An acceptable level of stray light in telescopes is estimated for the V-profile recording with a signal-to-noise ratio greater than three. Prospects for the limb chromosphere magnetic measurements are indicated.

Plasmonic terahertz detection by a double-grating-gate field-effect transistor structure with an asymmetric unit cell

Plasmonic terahertz detection by a double-grating gate field-effect transistor structure with an asymmetric unit cell is studied theoretically. Detection responsivity exceeding 8 kV/W at room temperature in the photovoltaic response mode is predicted for strong asymmetry of the structure unit cell. This value of the responsivity is an order of magnitude greater than reported previously for the other types of uncooled plasmonic terahertz detectors. Such enormous responsivity can be obtained without using any supplementary antenna elements because the double-grating gate acts as an aerial matched antenna that effectively couples the incoming terahertz radiation to plasma oscillations in the structure channel.

Terahertz detection in a slit-grating-gate field-effect-transistor structure

We have fabricated a grating-gate InGaAs/GaAs field-effect transistor structure with narrow slits between the grating gate fingers. The resonant photoconductive response of this structure has been measured in the sub-terahertz frequency range. The frequencies of the photoresponse peaks correspond to the excitation of the plasmon resonances in the structure channel. The obtained responsivity exceeds the responsivity reported previously for similar plasmonic terahertz detectors by two orders of magnitude due to enhanced coupling between incoming terahertz radiation and plasmon oscillations in the slit-grating-gate field-effect transistor structure.

Properties of Neutral Charmed Mesons in Proton--Nucleus Interactions at 70 GeV

The results of treatment of data obtained in the SERP-E-184experiment "Investigation of mechanisms of the production of charmed particles in proton-nucleus interactions at 70 GeV and their decays" by irradiating the active target of the SVD-2 facility consisting of carbon, silicon, and lead plates, are presented. After separating a signal from the two-particle decay of neutral charmed mesons and estimating the cross section for charm production at a threshold energy σ(cč)=7.1 \pm 2.4(stat.) \pm 1.4(syst.) \mub/nucleon, some properties of D mesons are investigated. These include the dependence of the cross section on the target mass number (its A dependence); the behavior of the differential cross sections dσ/dpt2 and dσ/dxF; and the dependence of the parameter α on the kinematical variables xF, pt2, and plab. The experimental results in question are compared with predictions obtained on the basis of the FRITIOF7.02 code.

Neutral pion number fluctuations at high multiplicity in pp-interactions at 50 GeV

Neutral pion number N0 distributions for each total number of particles in event Ntot=Nch+N0 are obtained. The scaled variance of neutral pion fluctuations, omega=D/ , is measured. The fluctuations increase at Ntot >22. According to quantum statistics models it may indicate for the approaching to pion condensate conditions for high pion multiplicity in the system.

Proton interactions with high multiplicity

Project Thermalization (Experiment SERP-E-190 at IHEP) is aimed to study the proton - proton interactions at 50 GeV with large number of secondary particles. In this report the experimentally measured topological cross sections are presented taking into account the detector response and procession efficiency. These data are in good agreement with gluon dominance model. The comparison with other models is also made and shows no essential discrepancies.

Measurement of the response of a Ga solar neutrino experiment to neutrinos from an 37Ar source

An intense source of 37Ar was produced by the (n,alpha) reaction on 40Ca by irradiating 330 kg of calcium oxide in the fast neutron breeder reactor at Zarechny, Russia. The 37Ar was released from the solid target by dissolution in acid, collected from this solution, purified, sealed into a small source, and brought to the Baksan Neutrino Observatory where it was used to irradiate 13 tonnes of gallium metal in the Russian-American gallium solar neutrino experiment SAGE. Ten exposures of the gallium to the source, whose initial strength was 409 +/- 2 kCi, were carried out during the period April to September 2004. The 71Ge produced by the reaction 71Ga(nu_e,e^-)71Ge was extracted, purified, and counted. The measured production rate was 11.0 ^+1.0 _-0.9 (stat) +/- 0.6 (syst) atoms of 71Ge/d, which is 0.79 ^+0.09_-0.10 of the theoretically calculated production rate. When all neutrino source experiments with gallium are considered together, there is an indication the theoretical cross section has been overestimated.

Total Polarisation Conversion in Two-dimensional Electron System under Cyclotron Resonance Conditions

The polarisation conversion of a linear polarised electromagnetic wave incident onto a two-dimensional (2D) electron system at an angle is theoretically studied. We consider the 2D system located at the interface between two dielectric media with different dielectric constants. An external dc magnetic field is assumed to be directed along the normal to the 2D electron layer. In such a configuration the cyclotron-polaritons (CPs) in 2D electron system can be excited with the frequencies in the vicinity of the cyclotron frequency. Under the CPs excitation the resonance polarisation conversion of electromagnetic wave greatly increases in the system. In the absence of the electron scattering in 2D system, the polarisation conversion reaches 100% at a certain value of the angle of incidence which is more than the total reflection angle. Extremely high polarisation conversion takes place in a quite wide range of variation of the angle of incidence. High polarisation conversion efficiency (above 80%) remains when the actual electron scattering in the 2D system on GsAs is taken into account. The considered phenomena may be taken up in polarisation spectroscopy of 2D electron systems.

PLANCKSUSY - new program for SUSY masses calculations: from Planck scale to our reality

We describe briefly new program for SUSY masses calculations. The main distinction of our program is that we start to solve the renormalization group equations for soft SUSY breaking parameters for SU(5) SUSY GUT model from Planck scale $M_{PL} = 2.4\cdot 10^{18}$ Gev. Our program works also for large $tan(β)$. We find that for $m_0 \leq 0.5 \cdot m_{1/2}$ the effects of the evolution from Planck scale to GUT scale are very essential. In particular, we find that neutralino even for small $m_0$ is always LSP. We also introduced in our program some parameter of non-universality of the gaugino masses at GUT scale. Playing with the non-universality of the gaugino masses at GUT scale it is possible to have the situation when leptonic modes are suppressed and the single SUSY signature is hadronic jets with missing energy.
