The weighed average geodetic of distributions of probabilities in the statistical physics

The results received in works [Centsov N.N. [N.N. Chentsov], Statistical decision rules and optimal inference, 1982 Amer. Math. Soc. (Translated from Russian); Morozova, E. A., Chentsov, N. N. Natural geometry of families of probability laws. 1991 Probability theory, 8, 133--265, 270--274, 276 (in Russian)] for statistical distributions at studying algebra of decision rules and natural geometry generated by her, are applied to estimations of the nonequilibrium statistical operator and superstatistics. Expressions for the nonequilibrium statistical operator and superstatistics are received as special cases of the weighed average geodetic of distributions of probabilities.

Stochastic storage models and noise-induced phase transitions

The most frequently used in physical application diffusive (based on the Fokker-Planck equation) model leans upon the assumption of small jumps of a macroscopic variable for each given realization of the stochastic process. This imposes restrictions on the description of the phase transition problem where the system is to overcome some finite potential barrier, or systems with finite size where the fluctuations are comparable with the size of a system. We suggest a complementary stochastic description of physical systems based on the mathematical stochastic storage model with basic notions of random input and output into a system. It reproduces statistical distributions typical for noise-induced phase transitions (e.g. Verhulst model) for the simplest (up to linear) forms of the escape function. We consider a generalization of the stochastic model based on the series development of the kinetic potential. On the contrast to Gaussian processes in which the development in series over a small parameter characterizing the jump value is assumed [Stratonovich R.L., Nonlinear Nonequilibrium Thermodynamics, Springer Series in Synergetics, vol.59, Springer Verlag, 1994], we propose a series expansion directly suitable for storage models and introduce the kinetic potential generalizing them.

First-Passage Time: A Conception Leading to Superstatistics. I. Superstatistics with Discrete Distributions

To describe the nonequilibrium states of a system we introduce a new thermodynamic parameter - the lifetime (the first passage time) of a system. The statistical distributions that can be obtained out of the mesoscopic description characterizing the behaviour of a system by specifying the stochastic processes are written. Superstatistics, introduced in [1] as fluctuating quantities of intensive thermodynamical parameters, are obtained from statistical distribution with lifetime (random time to system degeneracy) as thermodynamical parameter (and also generalization of superstatistics). Necessary for this realization condition with expression for average lifetime of stationary statistical system obtained from stochastical storage model [32] is consisting. The obtained distribution passes in Gibbs distribution depending on a measure of deviation from equilibrium related to fluxes and dissipativity in the system.

First-Passage Time: A Conception Leading to Superstatistics. II. Continuous Distributions and their Applications

A continuous approximation for the results of [1] is obtained. In this approximation the energy distribution is represented in the form of the product of the Gibbs factor and superstatistics factor. The mutual weights of the factors are defined by the control parameter of the problem. Various approximations for the superstatistics factor are written. The resulting distribution is compared to a number of known results (multiplicative noise, Van der Pol generator etc). It is applied to the description of self-organized criticality, statistics of cosmic rays etc as well.

Double-reversal thickness dependence of critical current in superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor Josephson junctions

We report the first experimental observation of the two-node thickness dependence of the critical current in Josephson junctions with a ferromagnetic interlayer. Vanishings of the critical current correspond to transitions into pi-state and back into conventional 0-state. The experimental data allow to extract the superconducting order parameter oscillation period and the pair decay length in the ferromagnet. We develope a theoretical approach based on Usadel equations, which takes into account the spin-flip scattering. Results of numerical calculations are in good agreement with the experimental data.

Spontaneous currents and half-integer Shapiro steps in Superconductor-Ferromagnet-Superconductor 0-pi Josephson junctions

We study Superconductor-Ferromagnet-Superconductor (Nb-Cu0.47 Ni0.53-Nb) Josephson junctions with spatial variations in the barrier thickness. Critical current vs. magnetic flux diffraction patterns indicate that the critical current density changes sign along the width of the junctions, creating interfaces between 0 and pi junction regions around which spontaneous currents can circulate. Shapiro steps observed at half-integer Josephson voltages can be explained by the phase-locking of the spontaneous circulating currents to the applied rf modulation.

Planar SFS Josephson Junctions Made by Focused Ion Beam Etching

Superconductor-Ferromagnet-Superconductor (S-F-S) Josephson junctions were fabricated by making a narrow cut through a S-F double layer using direct writing by Focused Ion Beam (FIB). Due to a high resolution (spot size smaller than 10 nm) of FIB, junctions with a small separation between superconducting electrodes ($\leq$ 30 nm) can be made. Such a short distance is sufficient for achieving a considerable proximity coupling through a diluted CuNi ferromagnet. We have successfully fabricated and studied S-F-S (Nb-CuNi-Nb) and S-S'-S (Nb-Nb/CuNi-Nb) junctions. Junctions exhibit clear Fraunhofer modulation of the critical current as a function of magnetic field, indicating good uniformity of the cut. By changing the depth of the cut, junctions with the $I_c R_n$ product ranging from 0.5 mV to $\sim 1μ$V were fabricated.

Family of Nonequilibrium Statistical Operators and the Influence of the Past on the Present

A family of nonequilibrium statistical operators (NSO) is introduced which differ by the system lifetime distribution over which the quasiequilibrium distribution is averaged. This changes the form of the source in the Liouville equation, as well as the expressions for the kinetic coefficients, average fluxes, and kinetic equations obtained with use of NSO. The difference from the Zubarev form of NSO is of the order of the reciprocal lifetime of a system.

Nonequilibrium Thermodynamics and Lifetime of Physical Systems

To describe the nonequilibrium states of a system we introduce a new thermodynamic parameter - the lifetime of a system. The statistical distributions which can be obtained out of the mesoscopic description characterizing the behaviour of a system by specifying the stochastic processes are written down. The expressions for the nonequilibrium entropy, temperature and entropy production are obtained, which at small values of fluxes coincide with those derived within the frame of extended irreversible thermodynamics. The expressions generalizing the Maxwell-Cattaneo relations of extended irreversible thermodynamics, and their analogues for mass transfer and chemical reactions are obtained.

Superstatistics and Lifetime

To describe the nonequilibrium states of a system we introduce a new thermodynamic parameter - the lifetime of a system. The statistical distributions which can be obtained out of the mesoscopic description characterizing the behaviour of a system by specifying the stochastic processes are written. Superstatistics, introduced in [1] as fluctuating quantities of intensive thermodynamical parameters, are obtained from statistical distribution with lifetime (random time to system degeneracy) as thermodynamical parameter (and also generalization of superstatistics). Necessary for this realization condition with expression for average lifetime of equilibrium statistical system obtained from stochastical storage model [25] is consist. The obtained distribution passes in Gibbs or in superstatistics distribution depending on a measure of dissipativity in the system.

Measurement of the Current-Phase Relation of SFS pi-Josephson junctions

We present measurements of the current-phase relation (CPR) of Superconductor-Ferromagnet-Superconductor (SFS) Josephson junctions as a function of temperature. The CPR is determined by incorporating the junction into a superconducting loop coupled to a dc SQUID, allowing measurement of the junction phase difference. Junctions fabricated with a thin (~ 22 nm) barrier of Cu0.47Ni0.53 sandwiched between Nb electrodes exhibit a re-entrant critical current with temperature, vanishing at T =T_pi ~ 2-4 K. We find that the critical current is negative for T < T_pi, indicating that the junction is a pi-Josephson junction. We find no evidence for second-order Josephson tunneling near T_pi in the CPR predicted by several theories.

Proximity Effect and Spontaneous Vortex Phase in Planar SF-Structures

The proximity effect in SF structures was examined. It is shown that, due to the oscillations of the induced superconducting order parameter in a ferromagnet, the critical temperature of an SF-bilayer becomes minimal when the thickness of the ferromagnetic layer is close to a quarter of the period of spatial oscillations. It is found that the spontaneous vortex state arisen in the superconductor due to the proximity of the magnetic domain structure of a ferromagnet brings about noticeable magnetoresistive effects.

Evidence for two-dimensional nucleation of superconductivity in MgB$_{2}$

According to the crystal structure of MgB$_{2}$ and band structure calculations quasi-two-dimensional (2D) boron planes are responsible for the superconductivity. We report on critical fields and resistance measurements of 30 nm thick MgB$_{2}$ films grown on MgO single crystalline substrate. A linear temperature dependence of the parallel and perpendicular upper critical fields indicate a 3D-like penetration of magnetic field into the sample. Resistivity measurements, in contrast, yield a temperature dependence of fluctuation conductivity above T$_{c}$ which agrees with the Aslamazov-Larkin theory of fluctuations in 2D superconductors. We consider this finding as an experimental evidence of two-dimensional nucleation of superconductivity in MgB$_{2}$.

Intrinsically frustrated superconducting array of SFS π-junctions

We report a direct observation of the crossover of the superconductor- ferromagnet-superconductor (SFS) junctions to the π-state which manifests itself in the half-period shift of the external magnetic field dependence of the transport critical current in the triangular SFS arrays. It is associated with the appearance of spontaneous supercurrents in the array at zero external field, with the ground state degenerated with respect to the two possible current flow directions. In conventional Josephson arrays this state can be observed only by imposing frustrating external field equal to a half-integer number of magnetic quanta per cell.

Coupling of two superconductors through a ferromagnet : evidence for a pi-junction

We report measurements of the temperature dependence of the critical current in Josephson junctions consisting of conventional superconducting banks of Nb and a weakly ferromagnetic interlayer of a Cu$_x$Ni$_{1-x}$ alloy, with $x$ around 0.5. With decreasing temperature $I_c$ generally increases, but for specific thicknesses of the ferromagnetic interlayer, a maximum is found followed by a strong decrease down to zero, after which $I_c$ rises again. Such a sharp cusp can only be explained by assuming that the junction changes from a 0-phase state at high temperatures to a $π$-phase state at low temperatures.

c-axis Tunneling in Nb/Au/YBaCuO Structures

We present the experimental results for Nb/Au/YBaCuO structures, in which the current flows along (001) direction of YBaCuO film. The theoretical evaluations show, that at the experimental values of the Au/YBaCuO interface transparency, determined from the interface resistance D~10^-6, the critical current of the structure is of the fluctuation order of magnitude due to the sharp decrease of the amplitude potential of the superconducting carriers on this interface. Obtained I-V-curves could be interpreted in terms of contact between d-type pairing superconductor or gapless isotropic superconductor with normal metal. No critical current was observed for investigated structures with characteristic interface resistance RnS~10^-6 Ohm cm^2, 2 orders of magnitude lower, than for known experimental data.
