Large Fluctuations in Open Quantum Systems

We study statistics of atypical measurement outcomes in the steady states of driven open quantum systems. In equilibrium, the probability distribution over the phase space, as encoded in, e.g., the Wigner function, is analytic in the phase-space coordinates. We show that this property is generically lost in driven dissipative systems: their {\it large-deviation function} develops lines and surfaces across which its derivatives are discontinuous. As an illustrative example, we consider a parametrically driven Kerr oscillator coupled linearly and/or nonlinearly to a dissipative bath. Rare fluctuations in the amplitude and phase of the induced oscillations are governed by semiclassical instanton trajectories of the corresponding Keldysh-Lindblad action. We demonstrate that a given fluctuation can be realized through multiple distinct instanton trajectories. The competition between these trajectories leads to abrupt switching of the dominant instanton and, consequently, to non-analytic features in the large-deviation function.

Qubit decoherence in dissipative two-photon resonator: real-time instantons and Wigner function

We study the quantum dynamics of a single bosonic cavity subject to two-photon driving and two-photon dissipation in the presence of finite detuning. Exploiting a hidden time-reversal symmetry, the Wigner representation and the WKB method, we introduce an effective phase-space potential for description of the steady state. It reveals two attracting points, which are metastable due to quantum fluctuations. By employing the Keldysh real-time path integral formalism, we compute the instanton trajectory governing the quantum activation process between these attractors and establish a fundamental connection with the Wigner representation. This relation unifies the steady-state phase-space description with dynamical quantum activation processes. We also derive an analytical expression for the decoherence rate of the system. Our work provides a coherent theoretical framework for analyzing quantum bistability, metastability, and decoherence in driven-dissipative nonlinear resonators, with direct implications for the design of bosonic qubits and quantum information processing.

Switching rates in Kerr resonator with two-photon dissipation and driving

We analytically investigate the switching rate in a two-photon driven Kerr oscillator with finite detuning and two-photon dissipation. This system exhibits quantum bistability and supports a logical manifold for a bosonic qubit. Using Kramer's theory together with the $P$-representation, we derive an analytical expression for the bit-flip error rate within the potential-barrier approximation. The agreement is demonstrated between analytical calculations and numerical simulations obtained by diagonalization of the Liouvillian superoperator. In the purely dissipative limit, the switching rate increases monotonically with detuning, as the two metastable states approach each other in phase space. However, the exponential contribution to the bit-flip rate exhibits a nontrivial dependence on system parameters, extending beyond the naive scaling with the average photon number. In the presence of large Kerr nonlinearity, the switching rate becomes a nonmonotonic function of the detuning and reaches a minimum at a finite detuning. This effect arises because detuning lowers the activation barrier for weak nonlinearity but increases it for large ones, ensuring a minimum of the switching-rate at nonzero detuning. These results establish key conditions for optimizing the performance of critical cat qubits and are directly relevant for the design of scalable superconducting bosonic quantum architectures.

Emergent equilibrium and quantum criticality in a two-photon dissipative oscillator

We study the dissipative phase transition in a quantum oscillator with two-photon drive and two-photon dissipation. Using the semi-classical Langevin equation and the Fokker-Plank approach, we construct a theory of non-perturbative quantum fluctuations and go beyond the semi-classical approximation. We demonstrate the mapping of a two-photon quantum dissipative oscillator onto a classical equilibrium model of a nonlinear classical oscillator in a colored-noise environment. Then, we justify the applicability of the Landau theory for a given dissipative phase transition. To do that, we explicitly demonstrate the Boltzmann-like form of stationary distribution function depending on the effective temperature, which is determined by the frequency detuning and the rates of two-photon drive and dissipation. In addition, we provide a description of the quantum critical region and obtain critical exponents that appear to be in very good agreement with numerical simulations.

Partially coherent conical refraction

In this paper, we extend the paraxial conical refraction model to the case of the partially coherent light using the unified optical coherence theory. We demonstrate the decomposition of conical refraction correlation functions into well-known conical refraction coherent modes for a Gaussian Schell-model source. Assuming randomness of the electrical field phase of the input beam, we reformulated and significantly simplified the rigorous conical refraction theory. This approach allows us to consider the propagation of light through a conical refraction crystal in exactly the same way as in the classical case of coherent radiation. Having this in hand, we derive analytically the conical refraction intensity both in the focal plane and in the far field, which allows us to explain and rigorously justify earlier experimental findings and predict new phenomena. The last include the counterintuitive effect of narrowing of the conical refraction ring width, disappearance of the dark Poggendorff's ring in the Lloyd's plane, and shift of Raman spots for the low-coherent conical refraction light. We also demonstrate a universal power-law dependence of conical refraction cones coherence degree on the input correlation length and diffraction-free propagation of the low-coherent conical refraction light in the far field.

Droplet beam generated with the round-tip axicon: Exact solutions for different axicon shapes

We theoretically investigate droplet quasi-Bessel beams for different shapes of the round-tip axicon. Exact solutions for the Fresnel diffraction integrals describing the axial distribution of the electric field amplitude behind the axicon are demonstrated. The analysis of the exact solutions shows that the period of «light droplets» is not a constant value, but depends on the axial distance and on the deviation of the axicon surface from the conical shape far from the rounded region. The predicted effect can be applied for the reconstruction of the exact shape of the axicon surface without 3D scanning.

Dissipative phase transition in systems with two-photon drive and nonlinear dissipation near the critical point

We study dissipative phase transition near the critical point for a system with two-photon driving and nonlinear dissipation. The proposed mean-field theory, which explicitly takes into account quantum fluctuations, allowed us to describe properly the evolution dynamics of the system and to demonstrate the new effects in the steady-state. We show that the presence of quantum fluctuations leads to a power-law dependence of the anomalous average at the phase transition point, with which the critical exponent is associated. Also, we investigate the effect of the quantum fluctuations on the critical point renormalization and demonstrate the existence of a two-photon pump threshold. It is noteworthy that the obtained results are in a good agreement with the numerical simulations.
