Alignment of the CLAS12 central hybrid tracker with a Kalman Filter

Several factors can contribute to the difficulty of aligning the sensors of tracking detectors, including a large number of modules, multiple types of detector technologies, and non-linear strip patterns on the sensors. All three of these factors apply to the CLAS12 CVT, which is a hybrid detector consisting of planar silicon sensors with non-parallel strips, and cylindrical micromegas sensors with longitudinal and arc-shaped strips located within a 5~T superconducting solenoid. To align this detector, we used the Kalman Alignment Algorithm, which accounts for correlations between the alignment parameters without requiring the time-consuming inversion of large matrices. This is the first time that this algorithm has been adapted for use with hybrid technologies, non-parallel strips, and curved sensors. We present the results for the first alignment of the CLAS12 CVT using straight tracks from cosmic rays and from a target with the magnetic field turned off. After running this procedure, we achieved alignment at the level of 10~$\mu$m, and the widths of the residual spectra were greatly reduced. These results attest to the flexibility of this algorithm and its applicability to future use in the CLAS12 CVT and other hybrid or curved trackers, such as those proposed for the future Electron-Ion Collider.

Workshop on Physics with Neutral Kaon Beam at JLab (KL2016) Mini-Proceedings

The KL2016 Workshop is following the Letter of Intent LoI12-15-001 "Physics Opportunities with Secondary KL beam at JLab" submitted to PAC43 with the main focus on the physics of excited hyperons produced by the Kaon beam on unpolarized and polarized targets with GlueX setup in Hall D. Such studies will broaden a physics program of hadron spectroscopy extending it to the strange sector. The Workshop was organized to get a feedback from the community to strengthen physics motivation of the LoI and prepare a full proposal. Further details about the Workshop can be found on the web page of the conference: http://www.jlab.org/conferences/kl2016/index.html .

Recent BaBar Studies of Bottomonium States

We present studies in bottomonium spectroscopy carried out with samples of $(98\pm1)$ million $Υ(2S)$ and $(121\pm1)$ million $Υ(3S)$ events recorded with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider at SLAC. Precise measurements of the branching fractions for $χ_{b1,2}(1P, 2P)\rightarrow γΥ(1S)$ and $χ_{b1,2}(2P)\rightarrow γΥ(2S)$ transitions, and searches for radiative decay to the $η_b(1S)$ and $η_b(2S)$ states are performed using photons that have converted into an $e^+ e^-$ pair. In addition, we summarize the results of a search for the spin-singlet partner of the $χ_{bJ}(1P)$ triplet, the $h_b(1P)$ state of bottomonium, in the transitions $Υ(3S)\rightarrow π^0 h_b$ and $Υ(3S)\rightarrow π^+π^- h_b$.

A Simple Explanation for the X(3872) Mass Shift Observed for Decay to D^{*0} {D^0}bar

We propose a simple explanation for the increase of approximately 3 MeV/c^2 in the mass value of the X(3872) obtained from D^{*0} {D^0}bar decay relative to that obtained from decay to J/psi pi+ pi-. If the total width of the X(3872) is 2-3 MeV, the peak position in the D^{*0} {D^0}bar invariant mass distribution is sensitive to the final state orbital angular momentum because of the proximity of the X(3872) to D^{*0} {D^0}bar threshold. We show that for total width 3 MeV and one unit of orbital angular momentum, a mass shift ~3 MeV/c^2 is obtained; experimental mass resolution should slightly increase this value. A consequence is that spin-parity 2^- is favored for the X(3872).
