Existence and stability of periodic solutions in a neural field equation

We study the existence and linear stability of stationary periodic solutions to a neural field model, an intergo-differential equation of the Hammerstein type. Under the assumption that the activation function is a discontinuous step function and the kernel is decaying sufficiently fast, we formulate necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a special class of solutions that we call 1-bump periodic solutions. We then analyze the stability of these solutions by studying the spectrum of the Frechet derivative of the corresponding Hammerstein operator. We prove that the spectrum of this operator agrees up to zero with the spectrum of a block Laurent operator. We show that the non-zero spectrum consists of only eigenvalues and obtain an analytical expression for the eigenvalues and the eigenfunctions. The results are illustrated by multiple examples.

Diagonalization of indefinite saddle point forms

We obtain sufficient conditions that ensure block diagonalization (by a direct rotation) of sign-indefinite symmetric sesquilinear forms as well as the associated operators that are semi-bounded neither from below nor from above. In the semi-bounded case, we refine the obtained results and, as an example, revisit the block Stokes Operator from fluid dynamics.

The Tan $2 Θ$-Theorem in Fluid Dynamics

We show that the generalized Reynolds number (in fluid dynamics) introduced by Ladyzhenskaya is closely related to the rotation of the positive spectral subspace of the Stokes block-operator in the underlying Hilbert space. We also explicitly evaluate the bottom of the negative spectrum of the Stokes operator and prove a sharp inequality relating the distance from the bottom of its spectrum to the origin and the length of the first positive gap.

Spatially localized solutions of the Hammerstein equation with sigmoid type of nonlinearity

We study the existence of fixed points to a parameterized Hammertstain operator $\cH_β,$ $β\in (0,\infty],$ with sigmoid type of nonlinearity. The parameter $β<\infty$ indicates the steepness of the slope of a nonlinear smooth sigmoid function and the limit case $β=\infty$ corresponds to a discontinuous unit step function. We prove that spatially localized solutions to the fixed point problem for large $β$ exist and can be approximated by the fixed points of $\cH_\infty.$ These results are of a high importance in biological applications where one often approximates the smooth sigmoid by discontinuous unit step function. Moreover, in order to achieve even better approximation than a solution of the limit problem, we employ the iterative method that has several advantages compared to other existing methods. For example, this method can be used to construct non-isolated homoclinic orbit of a Hamiltionian system of equations. We illustrate the results and advantages of the numerical method for stationary versions of the FitzHugh-Nagumo reaction-diffusion equation and a neural field model.

On the Existence of Unstable Bumps in Neural Networks

We study the neuronal field equation, a nonlinear integro-differential equation of Hammerstein type. By means of the Amann three fixed point theorem we prove the existence of bump solutions to this equation. Using the Krein-Rutman theorem we show their Lyapunov instability.

Brownian Motions on Metric Graphs

Brownian motions on a metric graph are defined. Their generators are characterized as Laplace operators subject to Wentzell boundary at every vertex. Conversely, given a set of Wentzell boundary conditions at the vertices of a metric graph, a Brownian motion is constructed pathwise on this graph so that its generator satisfies the given boundary conditions.

Representation Theorems for Indefinite Quadratic Forms Revisited

The first and second representation theorems for sign-indefinite, not necessarily semi-bounded quadratic forms are revisited. New straightforward proofs of these theorems are given. A number of necessary and sufficient conditions ensuring the second representation theorem to hold is proved. A new simple and explicit example of a self-adjoint operator for which the second representation theorem does not hold is also provided.

An intermediate value theorem in ordered Banach spaces

We consider a monotone increasing operator in an ordered Banach space having $u_-$ and $u_+$ as a strong super- and subsolution, respectively. In contrast with the well studied case $u_+ < u_-$, we suppose that $u_- < u_+$. Under the assumption that the order cone is normal and minihedral, we prove the existence of a fixed point located in the ordered interval $[u_-,u_+].$

Brownian Motions on Metric Graphs III - Construction: General Metric Graphs

Consider a metric graph G with set of vertices V. Assume that for every vertex in V one is given a Wentzell boundary condition. It is shown how one can construct the paths of a Brownian motion on G such that its generator - viewed as an operator on the space of continuous functions vanishing at infinity - has a domain consisting of twice continuously differentiable functions satisfying these boundary conditions.

The TAN $2Θ$ Theorem for Indefinite Quadratic Forms

A version of the Davis-Kahan Tan $2Θ$ theorem [SIAM J. Numer. Anal. \textbf{7} (1970), 1 -- 46] for not necessarily semibounded linear operators defined by quadratic forms is proven. This theorem generalizes a recent result by Motovilov and Selin [Integr. Equat. Oper. Theory \textbf{56} (2006), 511 -- 542].

Contraction semigroups on metric graphs

The main objective of the present work is to study contraction semigroups generated by Laplace operators on metric graphs, which are not necessarily self-adjoint. We prove criteria for such semigroups to be continuity and positivity preserving. Also we provide a characterization of generators of Feller semigroups on metric graphs.

Perturbation of spectra and spectral subspaces

We consider the problem of variation of spectral subspaces for linear self-adjoint operators under off-diagonal perturbations. We prove a number of new optimal results on the shift of the spectrum and obtain (sharp) estimates on the norm of the difference of two spectral projections.
