External and mutual synchronization of chimeras in a two layer network of nonlinear oscillators

We study numerically synchronization phenomena of spatiotemporal structures, including chimera states, in a two layer network of nonlocally coupled nonlinear chaotic discrete-time systems. Each of the interacting ensembles represents a one layer ring network of nonlocally coupled logistic maps in the chaotic regime. The coupled networks differ in their control parameters that enables one to observe distinct spatiotemporal dynamics in the networks when there is no coupling between them. We explore in detail external and mutual synchronization of chimera structures. The identity of synchronous structures and the estimation of synchronization regions are quantified by calculating the cross-correlation coefficient between relevant oscillators of the networks. We show that for non-identical networks, unidirectional and symmetric couplings lead to external and mutual synchronization between the interacting ensembles, respectively. This is confirmed by identical synchronous structures and by the existence of finite regions of synchronization within which the cross-correlation coefficient is equal to 1. We also show that these findings are qualitatively equivalent to the results of the classical synchronization theory of periodic self-sustained oscillations.

New type of chimera structures in a ring of bistable FitzHugh-Nagumo oscillators with nonlocal interaction

We study the spatiotemporal dynamics of a ring of nonlocally coupled FitzHugh-Nagumo oscillators in the bistable regime. A new type of chimera patterns has been found in the noise-free network and when isolated elements do not oscillate. The region of existence of these structures has been explored when the coupling range and the coupling strength between the network elements are varied.

Double-well chimeras in 2D lattice of chaotic bistable elements

We investigate spatio-temporal dynamics of a 2D ensemble of nonlocally coupled chaotic cubic maps in a bistability regime. In particular, we perform a detailed study on the transition "coherence -- incoherence" for varying coupling strength for a fixed interaction radius. For the 2D ensemble we show the appearance of amplitude and phase chimera states previously reported for 1D ensembles of nonlocally coupled chaotic systems. Moreover, we uncover a novel type of chimera state, double-well chimera, which occurs due to the interplay of the bistability of the local dynamics and the 2D ensemble structure. Additionally, we find double-well chimera behaviour for steady states which we call double-well chimera death. A distinguishing feature of chimera patterns observed in the lattice is that they mainly combine clusters of different chimera types: phase, amplitude and double-well chimeras.

Noise-induced transitions in a double-well oscillator with nonlinear dissipation

We develop a model of bistable oscillator with nonlinear dissipation. Using a numerical simulation and an electronic circuit realization of this system we study its response to additive noise excitations. We show that depending on noise intensity the system undergoes multiple qualitative changes in the structure of its steady-state probability density function (PDF). In particular, the PDF exhibits two pitchfork bifurcations versus noise intensity, which we describe using an effective potential and corresponding normal form of the bifurcation. These stochastic effects are explained by the partition of the phase space by the nullclines of the deterministic oscillator.
