Far- versus Near-Field RIS Modeling and Beam Design

In this chapter, we investigate the mathematical foundation of the modeling and design of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) in both the far- and near-field regimes. More specifically, we first present RIS-assisted wireless channel models for the far- and near-field regimes, discussing relevant phenomena, such as line-of-sight (LOS) and non-LOS links, rich and poor scattering, channel correlation, and array manifold. Subsequently, we introduce two general approaches for the RIS reflective beam design, namely optimization-based and analytical, which offer different degrees of design flexibility and computational complexity. Furthermore, we provide a comprehensive set of simulation results for the performance evaluation of the studied RIS beam designs and the investigation of the impact of the system parameters.

Resilient Vital Sign Monitoring Using RIS-Assisted Radar

Vital sign monitoring plays a critical role in healthcare and well-being, as parameters such as respiration and heart rate offer valuable insights into an individual's physiological state. While wearable devices allow for continuous measurement, their use in settings like in-home elderly care is often hindered by discomfort or user noncompliance. As a result, contactless solutions based on radar sensing have garnered increasing attention. This is due to their unobtrusive design and preservation of privacy advantages compared to camera-based systems. However, a single radar perspective can fail to capture breathing-induced chest movements reliably, particularly when the subject's orientation is unfavorable. To address this limitation, we integrate a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) that provides an additional sensing path, thereby enhancing the robustness of respiratory monitoring. We present a novel model for multi-path vital sign sensing that leverages both the direct radar path and an RIS-reflected path. We further discuss the potential benefits and improved performance our approach offers in continuous, privacy-preserving vital sign monitoring.

RIS-Assisted NOMA with Partial CSI and Mutual Coupling: A Machine Learning Approach

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is a promising multiple access technique. Its performance depends strongly on the wireless channel property, which can be enhanced by reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs). In this paper, we jointly optimize base station (BS) precoding and RIS configuration with unsupervised machine learning (ML), which looks for the optimal solution autonomously. In particular, we propose a dedicated neural network (NN) architecture RISnet inspired by domain knowledge in communication. Compared to state-of-the-art, the proposed approach combines analytical optimal BS precoding and ML-enabled RIS, has a high scalability to control more than 1000 RIS elements, has a low requirement for channel state information (CSI) in input, and addresses the mutual coupling between RIS elements. Beyond the considered problem, this work is an early contribution to domain knowledge enabled ML, which exploit the domain expertise of communication systems to design better approaches than general ML methods.

Identification over Affine Poisson Channels: Application to Molecular Mixture Communication Systems

Identification capacity has been established as a relevant performance metric for various goal-/task-oriented applications, where the receiver may be interested in only a particular message that represents an event or a task. For example, in olfactory molecular communications (MCs), odors or pheromones, which are often a mixture of various molecule types, may signal nearby danger, food, or a mate. In this paper, we examine the identification capacity with deterministic encoder for the discrete affine Poisson channel which can be used to model MC systems with molecule counting receivers. We establish lower and upper bounds on the identification capacity in terms of features of the affinity matrix between the released molecules and receptors at the receiver. As a key finding, we show that even when the number of receptor types scales sub-linearly in the number of molecule types $N,$ the number of reliably identifiable messages can grow super-exponentially with the rank of the affinity matrix, $T,$ i.e., $\sim 2^{(T \log T)R},$ where $R$ denotes the coding rate. We further derive lower and upper bounds on $R,$ and show that the proposed capacity theorem includes several known results in the literature as its special cases.

CKM-Assisted Physical-Layer Security for Resilience Against Unknown Eavesdropping Location

Channel Knowledge Map (CKM) is an emerging data-driven toolbox that captures our awareness of the wireless channel and enables efficient communication and resource allocation beyond the state of the art. In this work, we consider CKM for improving physical-layer security (PLS) in the presence of a passive eavesdropper (Eve), without making any assumptions about Eve's location or channel state information (CSI). We employ highly directional mmWave transmissions, with the confidential message jointly encoded across multiple beams. By exploiting CKM, we derive an algorithm for time and power allocation among the beams that maximizes the absolute secrecy rate under the worst-case scenario for Eve's location.

Liquid Crystal-Based RIS Loss-Trade-Off Analysis

Liquid crystal (LC) technology has emerged as a promising solution for large reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) at millimeter wave (mmWave) bands, offering advantages such as low power consumption, scalability, and continuously tunable phase shifts. For LC-RIS based on the delay-line architecture, i.e., with dedicated phase shifters, there exists a trade-off between the maximum achievable phase-shift range and the corresponding insertion loss, which has not been studied for LC-RIS-assisted wireless systems yet. In this paper, we investigate this trade-off where a base station (BS) and an RIS are configured to minimize the transmit power while satisfying a given quality of service (QoS) for a number of users. Simulation results reveal a fundamental trade-off between the total transmit power and the achievable data rate as a function of the LC phase-shift range.

Molecule Mixture Detection and Alphabet Design for Non-linear, Cross-reactive Receiver Arrays in MC

Air-based molecular communication (MC) has the potential to be one of the first MC systems to be deployed in real-world applications, enabled by existing sensor technologies such as metal-oxide semi-conductor (MOS) sensors. However, commercially available sensors usually exhibit non-linear and cross-reactive behavior, contrary to the idealizing assumptions about linear and perfectly molecule type-specific sensing often made in the MC literature. To address this gap, we propose a detector for molecule mixture communication with a general non-linear, cross-reactive receiver (RX) array that performs approximate maximum likelihood detection on the sensor outputs. Additionally, we introduce an algorithm for the design of mixture alphabets that accounts for the RX characteristics. We evaluate our detector and alphabet design algorithm through simulations that are based on measurements reported for two commercial MOS sensors. Our simulations demonstrate that the proposed detector achieves similar symbol error rates as data-driven methods without requiring large numbers of training samples and that the alphabet design algorithm outperforms methods that do not account for the RX characteristics. Since the proposed detector and alphabet design algorithm are also applicable to other chemical sensors, they pave the way for reliable air-based MC.

A Scalable Machine Learning Approach Enabled RIS Optimization with Implicit Channel Estimation

The reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is considered as a key enabler of the next-generation mobile radio systems. While attracting extensive interest from academia and industry due to its passive nature and low cost, scalability of RIS elements and requirement for channel state information (CSI) are two major difficulties for the RIS to become a reality. In this work, we introduce an unsupervised machine learning (ML) enabled optimization approach to configure the RIS. The dedicated neural network (NN) architecture RISnet is combined with an implicit channel estimation method. The RISnet learns to map from received pilot signals to RIS configuration directly without explicit channel estimation. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms baselines significantly.

Near-field Liquid Crystal RIS Phase-Shift Design for Secure Wideband Illumination

Liquid crystal (LC) technology provides a low-power and scalable approach to implement a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). However, the LC-based RIS's phase-shift response is inherently frequency-dependent, which can lead to performance degradation if not properly addressed. This issue becomes especially critical in secure communication systems, where such variations may result in considerable information leakage. To avoid the need for full channel state information (CSI) acquisition and frequent RIS reconfiguration, we design RIS for a wideband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system to illuminate a desired area containing legitimate users while avoiding leakage to regions where potential eavesdroppers may be located. Our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm improves the secrecy rate compared to methods that neglect frequency-dependent effects. In the considered setup, the proposed method achieves a secrecy rate of about 2 bits/symbol over an 8 GHz bandwidth when the center frequency is 60 GHz.

Temperature-Resilient LC-RIS Phase-Shift Design for Multi-user Downlink Communications

The reflecting antenna elements in most reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) use semiconductor-based (e.g., positive-intrinsic-negative (PIN) diodes and varactors) phase shifters. Although effective, a drawback of this technology is the high power consumption and cost, which become particularly prohibitive in millimeter-wave (mmWave)/sub-Terahertz range. With the advances in Liquid Crystals (LCs) in microwave engineering, we have observed a new trend in using LC for realizing phase shifter networks of RISs. LC-RISs are expected to significantly reduce the fabrication costs and power consumption. However, the nematic LC molecules are sensitive to temperature variations. Therefore, implementing LC-RIS in geographical regions with varying temperatures requires temperature-resilient designs. The mentioned temperature variation issue becomes more significant at higher temperatures as the phase shifter range reduces in warmer conditions, whereas it expands in cooler ones. In this paper, we study the impact of temperature on the operation of LC-RISs and develop a temperature-resilient phase shift design. Specifically, we formulate a max-min signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio optimization for a multi-user downlink mmWave network that accounts for the impact of temperature in the LC-RIS phase shifts. The simulation results demonstrate a significant improvement for the considered set of parameters when using our algorithm compared to the baseline approach, which neglects the temperature effects.

Rejuvenating IRS: AoI-based Low Overhead Reconfiguration Design

Intelligent reflective surface (IRS) technologies help mitigate undesirable effects in wireless links by steering the communication signal between transmitters and receivers. IRS elements are configured to adjust the phase of the reflected signal for a user's location and enhance the perceived signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In this way, an IRS improves the communication link but inevitably introduces more communication overhead. This occurs especially in mobile scenarios, where the user's position must be frequently estimated to re-adjust the IRS elements periodically. Such an operation requires balancing the amount of training versus the data time slots to optimize the communication performance in the link. Aiming to study this balance with the age of information (AoI) framework, we address the question of how often an IRS needs to be updated with the lowest possible overhead and the maximum of freshness of information. We derive the corresponding analytical solution for a mobile scenario, where the transmitter is static and the mobile user (MU) follows a random waypoint mobility model. We provide a closed-form expression for the average peak age of information (PAoI), as a metric to evaluate the impact of the IRS update frequency. As for the performance evaluation, we consider a realistic scenario following the IEEE 802.11ad standard, targeting the mmWave band. Our results reveal that the minimum achievable average PAoI is in the microsecond range and the optimal IRS update period is in the seconds range, causing 9% overhead in the link when the MU moves at a velocity of 1 m/s.

Integrated Sensing, Communication, and Powering (ISCAP) for IoT: A Joint Beamforming Design

This paper studies Integrated Sensing, Communication, and Powering (ISCAP) as a novel framework designed to enhance Internet of Things (IoT) applications within sixth-generation wireless networks. In these applications, in addition to IoT devices requiring an energy supply and receiving information or control data to perform their tasks, the base station serving them must sense the devices and their environment to localize them, thereby improving data transmission and enabling simultaneous power delivery. In our multi-node ISCAP IoT system, we optimize base station beamforming alongside the receiver's power-splitting factor to maximize energy harvesting while adhering to strict communication and sensing constraints. To effectively tackle this non-convex optimization problem, we decompose it into three manageable subproblems and employ several techniques such as semidefinite relaxation and Rayleigh quotient methods to find an efficient solution. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design, highlighting performance trade-offs among sensing accuracy, communication reliability, and power transfer efficiency.

RISnet: A Domain-Knowledge Driven Neural Network Architecture for RIS Optimization with Mutual Coupling and Partial CSI

Space-division multiple access (SDMA) plays an important role in modern wireless communications. Its performance depends on the channel properties, which can be improved by reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs). In this work, we jointly optimize SDMA precoding at the base station (BS) and RIS configuration. We tackle difficulties of mutual coupling between RIS elements, scalability to more than 1000 RIS elements, and high requirement for channel estimation. We first derive an RIS-assisted channel model considering mutual coupling, then propose an unsupervised machine learning (ML) approach to optimize the RIS with a dedicated neural network (NN) architecture RISnet, which has good scalability, desired permutation-invariance, and a low requirement for channel estimation. Moreover, we leverage existing high-performance analytical precoding scheme to propose a hybrid solution of ML-enabled RIS configuration and analytical precoding at BS. More generally, this work is an early contribution to combine ML technique and domain knowledge in communication for NN architecture design. Compared to generic ML, the problem-specific ML can achieve higher performance, lower complexity and permutation-invariance.

Temperature-Aware Phase-shift Design of LC-RIS for Secure Communication

Liquid crystal (LC) technology enables low-power and cost-effective solutions for implementing the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). However, the phase-shift response of LC-RISs is temperature-dependent, which, if unaddressed, can degrade the performance. This issue is particularly critical in applications such as secure communications, where variations in phase-shift response may lead to significant information leakage. In this paper, we consider secure communication through an LC-RIS and developed a temperature-aware algorithm adapting the RIS phase shifts to thermal conditions. Our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm significantly improves the secure data rate compared to scenarios where temperature variations are not accounted for.

Fronthaul-Constrained Distributed Radar Sensing

In this paper, we study a network of distributed radar sensors that collaboratively perform sensing tasks by transmitting their quantized radar signals over capacity-constrained fronthaul links to a central unit for joint processing. We consider per-antenna and per-radar vector quantization and fronthaul links with dedicated resources as well as shared resources based on time-division multiple access. For this setting, we formulate a joint optimization problem for fronthaul compression and time allocation that minimizes the Cramer Rao bound of the aggregated radar signals at the central unit. Since the problem does not admit a standard form that can be solved by existing commercial numerical solvers, we propose refomulations that enable us to develop an efficient suboptimal algorithm based on semidefinite programming and alternating convex optimization. Moreover, we analyze the convergence and complexity of the proposed algorithm. Simulation results confirm that a significant performance gain can be achieved by distributed sensing, particularly in practical scenarios where one radar may not have a sufficient view of all the scene. Furthermore, the simulation results suggest that joint fronthaul compression and time allocation are crucial for efficient exploitation of the limited fronthaul capacity.

Near-Field Multipath MIMO Channel Model for Imperfect Surface Reflection

Near-field (NF) communications is receiving renewed attention in the context of passive reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) due to their potentially extremely large dimensions. Although line-of-sight (LOS) links are expected to be dominant in NF scenarios, it is not a priori obvious whether or not the impact of non-LOS components can be neglected. Furthermore, despite being weaker than the LOS link, non-LOS links may be required to achieve multiplexing gains in multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) scenarios. In this paper, we develop a generalized statistical NF model for RIS-assisted MIMO systems that extends the widely adopted point-scattering model to account for imperfect reflections at large surfaces like walls, ceilings, and the ground. Our simulation results confirm the accuracy of the proposed model and reveal that in various practical scenarios, the impact of non-LOS components is indeed non-negligible, and thus, needs to be carefully taken into consideration.

Resilience-by-Design in 6G Networks: Literature Review and Novel Enabling Concepts

The sixth generation (6G) mobile communication networks are expected to intelligently integrate into various aspects of modern digital society, including smart cities, homes, health-care, transportation, and factories. While offering a multitude of services, it is likely that societies become increasingly reliant on 6G infrastructure. Any disruption to these digital services, whether due to human or technical failures, natural disasters, or terrorism, would significantly impact citizens' daily lives. Hence, 6G networks need not only to provide high-performance services but also to be resilient in maintaining essential services in the face of potentially unknown challenges. This paper provides a general review of the state of the art on resilient systems, definitions, concepts, and approaches. Moreover, it introduces a comprehensive concept, i.e., resilience-by-design (RBD), in three different levels for designing resilient 6G communication networks, summarizing our initial studies within the German Open6GHub project. First, we outline the general RBD enabling principles and discuss their related sub-categories. Next, adopting an interdisciplinary approach, we propose to embed these principles across all 6G layers/perspectives including electronics, physical channel, network components and functions, networks, services, and cross-layer and cross-infrastructure considerations and discuss their challenges. We further elaborate the RBD principles and their realizations along with several 6G use-cases. The paper is concluded by presenting a comprehensive list of open problems for future research on 6G resilience.

User Tracking and Direction Estimation Codebook Design for IRS-Assisted mmWave Communication

Future communication systems are envisioned to employ intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) and the millimeter wave (mmWave) frequency band to provide reliable high-rate services. For mobile users, the time-varying channel state information (CSI) requires adequate adjustment of the reflection pattern of the IRS. We propose a novel codebook-based user tracking (UT) algorithm for IRS-assisted mmWave communication, allowing suitable reconfiguration of the IRS unit cell phase shifts, resulting in a high reflection gain. The presented algorithm acquires the direction information of the user based on a peak likelihood-based direction estimation. Using the direction information, the user's trajectory is extrapolated to proactively update the adopted codeword and adjust the IRS phase shift configuration accordingly. Furthermore, we conduct a theoretical analysis of the direction estimation error and utilize the obtained insights to design a codebook specifically optimized for direction estimation. Our numerical results reveal a lower direction estimation error of the proposed UT algorithm when employing our designed codebook compared to codebooks from the literature. Furthermore, the average achieved signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) as well as the average effective rate of the proposed UT algorithm are analyzed. The proposed UT algorithm requires only a low overhead for direction and channel estimation and avoids outdated IRS phase shifts. Furthermore, it is shown to outperform two benchmark schemes based on direct phase shift optimization and hierarchical codebook search, respectively, via computer simulations.
