Singularity of Cannon-Thurston maps

In a closed fibered hyperbolic 3-manifold M ,the inclusion of a fiber S, with S and M lifted to the universal covers, gives an exponentially distorted embedding of the hyperbolic plane into hyperbolic 3-space. Nevertheless, Cannon and Thurston showed that there is a map from the circle at infinity of the hyperbolic plane to the 2-sphere at infinity of hyperbolic 3-space. The Cannon-Thurston map is surjective, finite-to-one, and gives a space-filling curve. Here we use properties of geodesics to prove that many natural measures on the circle when pushed forward by the Cannon-Thurston map become singular with respect to many natural measures on the 2-sphere. The circle measures we consider are the Lebesgue measure and stationary measures that arise from fully supported random walks on the surface group. The measures on the sphere we consider are the Lebesgue measure and stationary measures that arise from geometric random walks on the 3- manifold group. We obtain the singularity of measures from the following properties of typical geodesics. We prove that a hyperbolic geodesic sampled with respect to a pushforward measure asymptotically spends a definite proportion of its time close to a fiber. On the other hand, we show that a hyperbolic geodesic sampled with respect to a natural measure on the sphere spends an asymptotically negligible proportion of its time close to a fiber. For a more restricted class of circle measures, namely the Lebesgue measure and stationary measures from geometric random walks on the surface group, we also prove an effective result for the proportion of time spent close to a fiber.

Quasi-geodesics in the Cannon-Thurston metric

A closed fibered 3-manifold admits a complete hyperbolic metric if and only if it has a fibration with a pseudo-Anosov monodromy. The stable and the unstable laminations associated to the pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism on the fiber surface give rise to a natural metric on the 3-manifold, the Cannon-Thurston metric, which is quasi-isometric to the hyperbolic metric. In this paper, we describe a specific family of quasi-geodesics in the Cannon-Thurston metric. We use the main results of this article in a companion paper to obtain statistics for typical geodesics with respect to various natural measures on the 2-sphere, thus giving a geometric criterion for singularity between some of these measure classes.

Diagonal flow detects topology of strata

We study the interplay between the diagonal flow on, and the topology of, a stratum component of a space of rooted quadratic differentials. We prove that the flow group -- the subgroup of the fundamental group generated by almost-flow loops -- equals the fundamental group. As a corollary, we show that the plus and minus modular Rauzy-Veech groups are finite-index subgroups of their ambient modular monodromy groups. This partially answers a question of Yoccoz. Using this, and recent advances on algebraic hulls and Zariski closures of symplectic monodromy groups, we prove that the Rauzy-Veech groups are Zariski dense in their ambient symplectic groups. Density, in turn, implies the simplicity of the plus and minus Lyapunov spectra of any component of any stratum of quadratic differentials. We thus establish the Kontsevich -- Zorich conjecture.

Stationary measures on the circle from hyperbolic surfaces with cusps cannot be straightened by quasi-symmetries

Stationary measures on the circle that arise from a large class of random walks on the fundamental group of a finite-area complete hyperbolic surface with cusps are singular with respect to the Lebesgue measure. In particular, it is sufficient for singularity that a stationary measure satisfies an exponential decay for cusp excursions with excursions being measured in the path metric on horocycles bounding cusps. In this note, we settle a conjecture of McMullen by proving that the singularity of stationary measures satisfying such exponential decay is quasi-symmetrically stable, that is under push-forward by any quasi-symmetry of the circle the measure remains singular.

Random walk speed is a proper function on Teichmüller space

Consider a closed surface $M$ with negative Euler characteristic, and an admissible probability measure on the fundamental group of $M$ with finite first moment. Corresponding to each point in the Teichmüller space of $M$, there is an associated random walk on the hyperbolic plane. We show that the speed of this random walk is a proper function on the Teichmüller space of $M$, and we relate the growth of the speed to the Teichmüller distance to a basepoint. One key argument is an adaptation of Gouëzel's pivoting techniques to actions of a fixed group on a sequence of hyperbolic metric spaces.

Linear progress in fibres

A fibered hyperbolic 3-manifold induces a map from the hyperbolic plane to hyperbolic 3-space, the respective universal covers of the fibre and the manifold. The induced map is an embedding that is exponentially distorted in terms of the individual metrics. In this article, we begin a study of the distortion along typical rays in the fibre. We verify that a typical ray in the hyperbolic plane makes linear progress in the ambient metric in hyperbolic 3-space. We formulate the proof in terms of some soft aspects of the geometry and basic ergodic theory. This enables us to extend the result to analogous contexts that correspond to certain extensions of closed surface groups. These include surface group extensions that are Gromov hyperbolic, the universal curve over a Teichmüller disc, and the extension induced by the Birman exact sequence.

Weil--Petersson geodesics on the modular surface

We consider the Weil--Petersson (WP) metric on the modular surface. We lift WP geodesics to the universal cover of the modular surface and analyse geometric properties of the lifts as paths in the hyperbolic metric on the universal cover. For any pair of distinct points in the thick part of the universal cover, we prove that the WP and hyperbolic geodesic segments that connect the pair, fellow-travel in the thick part and all deviations between these segments arise during cusp excursions. Furthermore, we give a quantitative analysis of the deviation during an excursion. We leverage the fellow traveling to derive a correspondence between recurrent WP and hyperbolic geodesic rays from a base-point. We show that the correspondence can be promoted to a homeomorphism on the circle of directions. By analysing cuspidal winding of a typical WP geodesic ray, we show that the homeomorphism pushes forward a Lebesgue measure on the circle to a singular measure. In terms of continued fraction coefficients, the singularity boils down to a comparison that we prove, namely, the average coefficient is bounded along a typical WP ray but unbounded along a typical hyperbolic ray.

Cusp excursions of random geodesics in Weil-Petersson type metrics

We analyse cusp excursions of random geodesics for Weil--Petersson type incomplete metrics on orientable surfaces of finite type: in particular, we give bounds for maximal excursions. We also give similar bounds for cusp excursions of random Weil--Petersson geodesics on non-exceptional moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces conditional on the assumption that the Weil--Petersson flow is polynomially mixing. Moreover, we explain how our methods can be adapted to understand almost greasing collisions of typical trajectories in certain slowly mixing billiards.

Statistical hyperbolicity for harmonic measure

We consider harmonic measures that arise from random walks on the mapping class group determined by probability distributions that have finite first moment with respect to the Teichmuller metric, and whose supports generate non-elementary subgroups. We prove that Teichmuller space with the Teichmuller metric is statistically hyperbolic for such a harmonic measure.

Coding Teichmüller flow using veering triangulations

We develop the theory of veering triangulations on oriented surfaces adapted to moduli spaces of half-translation surfaces. We use veering triangulations to give a coding of the Teichmüller flow on connected components of strata of quadratic differentials. We prove that this coding, given by a countable shift, has an approximate product structure and a roof function with exponential tails. This makes it conducive to the study of the dynamics of Teichmüller flow.

Recurrence of quadratic differentials for harmonic measure

We consider random walks on the mapping class group that have finite first moment with respect to the word metric, whose support generates a non-elementary subgroup and contains a pseudo-Anosov map whose invariant Teichmuller geodesic is in the principal stratum of quadratic differentials. We show that a Teichmuller geodesic typical with respect to the harmonic measure for such random walks, is recurrent to the thick part of the principal stratum. As a consequence, the vertical and horizontal foliations of such a random Teichmuller geodesic have no saddle connections.

The stratum of random mapping classes

We consider random walks on the mapping class group whose support generates a non-elementary subgroup and contains a pseudo-Anosov map whose invariant Teichmüller geodesic is in the principal stratum. For such random walks, we show that mapping classes along almost every infinite sample path are eventually pseudo-Anosov, with invariant Teichmüller geodesics in the principal stratum. This provides an answer to a question of Kapovich and Pfaff.

The curves not carried

Suppose $τ$ is a train track on a surface $S$. Let $C(τ)$ be the set of isotopy classes of simple closed curves carried by $τ$. Masur and Minsky [2004] prove $C(τ)$ is quasi-convex inside the curve complex $C(S)$. We prove the complement, $C(S) - C(τ)$, is quasi-convex.

Word length statistics for Teichmüller geodesics and singularity of harmonic measure

Given a measure on the Thurston boundary of Teichmueller space, one can pick a geodesic ray joining some basepoint to a randomly chosen point on the boundary. Different choices of measures may yield typical geodesics with different geometric properties. In particular, we consider two families of measures: the ones which belong to the Lebesgue or visual measure class, and harmonic measures for random walks on the mapping class group generated by a distribution with finite first moment in the word metric. We consider the ratio between the word metric and the relative metric of approximating mapping class group elements along a geodesic ray, and prove that this ratio tends to infinity along almost all geodesics with respect to Lebesgue measure, while the limit is finite along almost all geodesics with respect to harmonic measure. As a corollary, we establish singularity of harmonic measure. We show the same result for cofinite volume Fuchsian groups with cusps. As an application, we answer a question of Deroin-Kleptsyn-Navas about the vanishing of the Lyapunov expansion exponent.

Partial sums of excursions along random geodesics and volume asymptotics for thin parts of moduli spaces of quadratic differentials

For a non-uniform lattice in SL(2,R), we consider excursions in cusp neighborhoods of a random geodesic on the corresponding finite area hyperbolic surface or orbifold. We prove a strong law for a certain partial sum involving these excursions. This generalizes a theorem of Diamond and Vaaler for continued fractions. In the Teichmuller setting, we consider invariant measures for the SL(2,R) action on the moduli spaces of quadratic differentials. By the work of Eskin and Mirzakhani, these measures are supported on affine invariant submanifolds of a stratum of quadratic differentials. For a Teichmuller geodesic random with respect to a SL(2,R)-invariant measure, we study its excursions in thin parts of the associated affine invariant submanifold. Under a regularity hypothesis for the invariant measure, we prove similar strong laws for certain partial sums involving these excursions. The limits in these laws are related to the volume asymptotic of the thin parts. By Siegel-Veech theory, these are given by various Siegel-Veech constants. As a direct consequence, we show that the word metric grows faster than T log T along Teichmuller geodesics random with respect to the Masur-Veech measure.

Every transformation is disjoint from almost every non-classical exchange

A natural generalization of interval exchange maps are linear involutions, first introduced by Danthony and Nogueira. Recurrent train tracks with a single switch which we call non-classical interval exchanges, form a subclass of linear involutions without flips. They are analogs of classical interval exchanges, and are first return maps for non-orientable measured foliations associated to quadratic differentials on Riemann surfaces. We show that every transformation is disjoint from almost every irreducible non-classical interval exchange. In the appendix, we prove that for almost every pair of quadratic differentials with respect to the Masur-Veech measure, the vertical flows are disjoint. In the appendix, we prove that for almost every pair of quadratic differentials with respect to the Masur-Veech measure, the vertical flows are disjoint.
