Kink dynamics in a high-order field model

We study various properties of topological solitons (kinks) of a field-theoretic model with a polynomial potential of the twelfth degree. This model is remarkable in that it has several topological sectors, in which kinks have different masses. We obtain asymptotic estimates for the kink-antikink and antikink-kink interaction forces. We also study numerically kink-antikink and antikink-kink collisions and observe a number of interesting phenomena: annihilation of a kink-antikink pair in one topological sector and the production in its place of a pair in another sector; resonance phenomena -- escape windows, despite the absence of vibrational modes in the kink excitation spectra.

Long-range interaction of kinks in higher-order polynomial models

We obtain asymptotic estimates of the interaction forces between kink and antikink in a family of field-theoretic models with two vacua in (1+1)-dimensional space-time. In our study we consider a new class of soliton solutions previously found in our paper [Chaos, Solitons and Fractals 165 (2022) 112805]. We focus on the case of kinks having one exponential and one power-law asymptotics. We show that if the kink and antikink are faced each other with long-range tails, the force of attraction between them at large separations demonstrates a power-law decay with the distance. We also performed numerical simulations to measure the interaction force and obtained good agreement between the experimental values and theoretical estimates.

Connections between kinks with different asymptotics

In this letter, we show how to build bridges between field-theoretic models that have kink solutions with different asymptotic behavior. We study transformational properties of kinks in models with a real scalar field in two-dimensional space-time. We show how to obtain new models with solitons having different asymptotic behavior, using deformations with specific functions. In particular, starting from the well-known $φ^4$ model, we obtain kinks with super-exponential, super-super-exponential, power-law, and logarithmic asymptotics. We also comment on how asymptotic behavior of stability potential and zero mode can be obtained for deformed kinks.

Kinks in higher-order polynomial models

We consider a family of field-theoretic models with a real scalar field in (1+1)-dimensional space-time. The field dynamics in each model is determined by a polynomial potential with two degenerate minima. We obtain exact general formulas for kink solutions with power-law asymptotic behavior. We also write out formulas for the asymptotics of all found kinks. In addition, we analyze some other properties of the obtained kinks: stability potentials, zero modes, positions of the centers of mass.

Remarks on sine-Gordon kink--fermion system: localized modes and scattering

We study numerically the kink-fermion interactions in a 1+1 dimensional toy model, which describes sine-Gordon kinks coupled to the massless Dirac fermions with backreaction. We show that the spectrum of fermionic modes strongly depends on the choice of the coupling, in particular, there are no localized modes for a minimal Yukawa coupling. We analyze the scattering of the fermionic packet by the kink. We demonstrate that the outcome of the collision dynamically depends on the phase of the incoming fermion packet, it results in alternating regimes of positive and negative acceleration of the kink.

Deformations of Kink Tails

We study the asymptotic properties of kinks in connection with the deformation procedure. We show that, upon deformation of the field-theoretic model, the asymptotics of kinks can change or remain unchanged, depending on the properties of the deforming function. The cases of both explicit and implicit kinks are considered. In addition, we show that the the deformation procedure can be applied to the important case of implicit kinks. We also prove that for any kink with a power-law tail, the stability potential decreases as the inverse square of the coordinate. The physical consequences of the deformation are discussed: the change of the kink mass, as well as the asymptotic behavior of the kink-antikink force.

Exotic Final States in the $φ^8$ Multi-Kink Collisions

We study final states in the scattering of kinks and antikinks of the $φ^8$ field-theoretic model. We use the initial conditions in the form of two, three or four static or moving kinks. In the numerical experiments we observe a number of different processes such as emergence of static and moving oscillons, change of the kink's topological sector, scattering of an oscillon by a kink, production of kink-antikink pairs in oscillon-oscillon collisions. In antikink-kink collisions for asymmetric kinks, we found resonance phenomena -- escape windows.

Kink solutions in logarithmic scalar field theory: Excitation spectra, scattering, and decay of bions

We consider the (1+1)-dimensional Lorentz-symmetric field-theoretic model with logarithmic potential having a Mexican-hat form with two local minima similar to that of the quartic Higgs potential in conventional electroweak theory with spontaneous symmetry breaking and mass generation. We demonstrate that this model allows topological solutions -- kinks. We analyze the kink excitation spectrum, and show that it does not contain any vibrational modes. We also study the scattering dynamics of kinks for a wide range of initial velocities. The critical value of the initial velocity occurs in kink-antikink collisions, which thus differentiates two regimes. Below this value, we observe the capture of kinks and their fast annihilation; while above this value, the kinks bounce off and escape to spatial infinities. Numerical studies show no resonance phenomena in the kink-antikink scattering.

Kink-Antikink Collisions and Multi-Bounce Resonance Windows in Higher-Order Field Theories

We study collisions of coherent structures in higher-order field-theoretic models, such as the $ϕ^8$, $ϕ^{10}$ and $ϕ^{12}$ ones. The main distinguishing feature, of the example models considered herein, is that the collision arises due to the long-range interacting algebraic tails of these solitary waves. We extend the approach to suitably initialize the relevant kinks, in the additional presence of finite initial speed, in order to minimize the dispersive wave radiation potentially created by their slow spatial decay. We find that, when suitably initialized, these models still feature the multi-bounce resonance windows earlier found in models in which the kinks bear exponential tails, such as the $ϕ^4$ and $ϕ^6$ field theories among others. Also present is the self-similar structure of the associated windows with three- and more-bounce windows at the edges of two- and lower-bounce ones. Moreover, phenomenological, but highly accurate (and predictive) scaling relations are derived for the dependence of the time between consecutive collisions and, e.g., the difference in kinetic energy between the incoming one and the critical one for one-bounces. Such scalings are traced extensively over two-bounce collision windows throughout the three models, hinting at the possibility of an analytical theory in this direction.

Effect of discrete breathers on the specific heat of a nonlinear chain

A nonlinear chain with six-order polynomial on-site potential is used to analyze the evolution of the total to kinetic energy ratio during development of modulational instability of extended nonlinear vibrational modes. For the on-site potential of hard-type (soft-type) anharmonicity, the instability of $q=π$ mode ($q=0$ mode) results in the appearance of long-living discrete breathers (DBs) that gradually radiate their energy and eventually the system approaches thermal equilibrium with spatially uniform and temporally constant temperature. In the hard-type (soft-type) anharmonicity case, the total to kinetic energy ratio is minimal (maximal) in the regime of maximal energy localization by DBs. It is concluded that DBs affect specific heat of the nonlinear chain and for the case of hard-type (soft-type) anharmonicity they reduce (increase) the specific heat.

Equilibration of sinusoidal modulation of temperature in linear and nonlinear chains

The equilibration of sinusoidally modulated distribution of the kinetic temperature is analyzed in the $β$-Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou chain with different degrees of nonlinearity and for different wavelengths of temperature modulation. Two different types of initial conditions are used to show that either one gives the same result as the number of realizations increases and that the initial conditions that are closer to the state of thermal equilibrium give faster convergence. The kinetics of temperature equilibration is monitored and compared to the analytical solution available for the linear chain in the continuum limit. The transition from ballistic to diffusive thermal conductivity with an increase in the degree of anharmonicity is shown. In the ballistic case, the energy equilibration has an oscillatory character with an amplitude decreasing in time, and in the diffusive case, it is monotonous in time. For smaller wavelength of temperature modulation, the oscillatory character of temperature equilibration remains for a larger degree of anharmonicity. For a given wavelength of temperature modulation, there is such a value of the anharmonicity parameter at which the temperature equilibration occurs most rapidly.

From thin to thick domain walls: An example of the $φ^8$ model

We demonstrate that for some certain values of parameters of the $(1+1)$-dimensional $φ^8$ model, the kink solutions can be found from polynomial equations. For some selected values of the parameters we give the explicit formulas for the kinks in all topological sectors of the model. Based on the obtained algebraic equations, we show that in a special limiting case, kinks with power-law asymptotics arise in the model, describing, in particular, thick domain walls. Objects of this kind could be of interest for modern cosmology.

Domain wall thickness and deformations of the field model

We consider the change in the asymptotic behavior of solutions of the type of flat domain walls (i.e., kink solutions) in field-theoretic models with a real scalar field. We show that when the model is deformed by a bounded deforming function, the exponential asymptotics of the corresponding kink solutions remain exponential, while the power-law ones remain power-law. However, the parameters of these asymptotics, which are related to the wall thickness, can change.

Asymmetric kink solutions of hyperbolically deformed model

We study some properties of kink solutions of the model with non-polynomial potential obtained by deforming the well-known $φ^6$ field model. We consider the excitation spectrum of the kink. We also discuss the properties of the `kink+antikink' system as a whole that are not inherent to a solitary kink or antikink.

Vibrations of thick domain walls: How to avoid no-go theorem

The asymptotic properties of the stability potentials of kinks with power-law tails are discussed. In particular, in cosmology such kinks can describe "thick" domain walls. The discrete part of the domain wall excitation spectrum, the profile of which is described by a kink solution with one or both power-law asymptotics, cannot contain levels other than zero (translational) mode. Nevertheless, it can be shown that scenarios are quite possible when long-lived localized vibrations will be excited on the domain wall. This, in turn, can affect the processes of interaction of two or more domain walls.

Effect of discrete breathers on macroscopic properties of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam chain

The effect of discrete breathers (DBs) on macroscopic properties of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam chain with symmetric and asymmetric potentials is investigated. The total to kinetic energy ratio (related to specific heat), stress (related to thermal expansion), and Young's modulus are monitored during the development of modulational instability of the zone boundary mode. The instability results in the formation of chaotic DBs followed by the transition to thermal equilibrium when DBs disappear due to energy radiation in the form of small-amplitude phonons. It is found that DBs reduce the specific heat for all the considered chain parameters. They increase the thermal expansion when the potential is asymmetric and, as expected, thermal expansion is not observed in the case of symmetric potential. The Young's modulus in the presence of DBs is smaller than in thermal equilibrium for the symmetric potential and for the potential with a small asymmetry, but it is larger than in thermal equilibrium for the potential with greater asymmetry. Our results can be useful for setting experiments on the identification of DBs in crystals by measuring their macroscopic properties.

Collision of $ϕ^4$ kinks free of the Peierls-Nabarro barrier in the regime of strong discreteness

The two major effects observed in collisions of the continuum $ϕ^4$ kinks are (i) the existence of critical collision velocity above which the kinks always emerge from the collision and (ii) the existence of the escape windows for multi-bounce collisions with the velocity below the critical one, associated with the energy exchange between the kink's internal and translational modes. The potential merger (for sufficiently low collision speeds) of the kink and antikink produces a bion with oscillation frequency $ω_B$, which constantly radiates energy, since its higher harmonics are always within the phonon spectrum. Similar effects have been observed in the discrete $ϕ^4$ kink-antikink collisions for relatively weak discreteness. Here we analyze kinks colliding with their mirror image antikinks in the regime of strong discreteness considering an exceptional discretization of the $ϕ^4$ field equation where the static Peierls-Nabarro potential is precisely zero and the not-too-fast kinks can propagate practically radiating no energy. Several new effects are observed in this case, originating from the fact that the phonon band width is small for strongly discrete lattices and for even higher discreteness an inversion of the phonon spectrum takes place with the short waves becoming low-frequency waves. When the phonon band is narrow, not a bion but a discrete breather with frequency $ω_{DB}$ and all higher harmonics outside the phonon band is formed. When the phonon spectrum is inverted, the kink and antikink become mutually repulsive solitary waves with oscillatory tails, and their collision is possible only for velocities above a threshold value sufficient to overcome their repulsion.

Explicit kinks in higher-order field theories

We study an example of higher-order field-theoretic model with an eighth-degree polynomial potential -- the $φ^8$ model. We show that for some certain ratios of constants of the potential, the problem of finding kink-type solutions in $(1+1)$-dimensional space-time reduces to solving algebraic equations. For two different ratios of the constants, which determine positions of the vacua, we obtained explicit formulas for kinks in all topological sectors. The properties of the obtained kinks are also studied -- their masses are calculated, and the excitation spectra which could be responsible for the appearance of resonance phenomena in kink-antikink scattering are found.
