Relationship between polymorphic structures and magnetic properties of La$_{2-x}A'_{x}$Ni$_{7}$ compounds ($A$' = Sm, Gd)

In this study, the crystal structure and magnetic properties of La$_{2-x} A'_{x}$Ni$_{7}$ compounds with magnetic rare earth elements ($A$' = Sm, Gd) have been investigated combining X-ray powder diffraction and magnetic measurements. These intergrowth compounds crystallize in a mixture of 2$H$ hexagonal (Ce$_{2}$Ni$_{7}$-type) and 3$R$ rhombohedral (Gd$_{2}$Co$_{7}$-type) polymorphic structures which are related to the stacking of [$AB_{5}$] and [$A_{2}B_{4}$] subunits along the $c$-axis.The average cell volume decreases linearly versus $A$' content, whereas the $c/a$ ratio reaches a minimum at $x$ = 1, due to geometric constraints upon $A$' for La substitution between the two different subunits. The magnetic properties strongly depend on the structure type and the $A$' content. Hexagonal La$_{2}$Ni$_{7}$ is a weak antiferromagnet (wAFM) at low field and temperature and undergoes metamagnetic transitions towards weak ferromagnetic state (wFM) under applied field. Under an applied field of 0.1 T, La$_{2-x}A'_{x}$Ni$_{7}$ intermetallic compounds display two different transition temperatures $T_{1}$ and $T_{2}$ that both increase with $x$. $T_{1}$ is associated with a wFM-wAFM transition in the 2$H$ phase for $A$'= Sm, whereas $T_{2}$ is related to the Curie temperature of both 2$H$ and 3$R$ phases. A metamagnetic behaviour is observed between $T_{1}$ and $T_{2}$ with transition field $μ_{0}H_{Trans}$ between 2 and 3.5 T for compounds with $A$' = Sm. The La$_{2-x}Sm_{x}$Ni$_{7}$ compounds ($x$ > 0} behave as hard magnets with a large coercive field $μ_{0}H_{C}$ at low temperature ($μ_{0}H_{C}$ > 9 T at 5 K for $x$ = 2), whereas the La$_{2-x} Gd_{x}$Ni$_{7}$ compounds ($x$ > 0) are soft ferrimagnets with a linear increase of the saturation magnetization versus Gd content.

Large saturation moment and high ferromagnetic transition temperature in a structurally disordered inverse Heusler alloy Fe2RuGe

We report the successful synthesis of a new 4$d$ based polycrystalline inverse Heusler alloy Fe$_2$RuGe by an arc melting process and have studied in detail its structural, magnetic and transport properties complemented with first principle calculations. X-ray and neutron diffraction, Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure and $^{57}$Fe Mössbauer spectroscopic studies confirm the single phase nature of the system where the Fe and Ru atoms are randomly distributed in the 4$c$ and 4$d$ Wyckoff positions in a ratio close to 50:50. The formation of the disordered structure is also confirmed by the theoretical energy minimization calculation. Despite the random cross-site disorder of Fe and Ru atoms, magnetic measurements suggest not only a high Curie temperature of $\sim$860\,K, but also a large saturation magnetic moment $\sim$4.9\,$μ_B$ per formula unit at 5\,K, considerably exceeding the theoretical limit (4\,$μ_B$ per formula unit) predicted by the Slater-Pauling rule. Only a few Fe-based inverse Heusler alloys are known to exhibit such high Curie temperatures. Neutron diffraction analysis coupled with the isothermal magnetization value indicates that the magnetic moments in Fe$_2$RuGe are associated with Fe-atoms only, which is also confirmed by Mössbauer spectrometry. Interestingly, in comparison to the cubic or hexagonal phase of the parent compound, Fe$_3$Ge, the Curie temperature of Fe$_2$RuGe has increased significantly despite the substitution of the nonmagnetic, yet isoelectronic element Ru in this structurally disordered compound. Our theoretical calculation reveals that the large Fe moment ($\sim2.8μ_B$/Fe) on the 4$b$ site can be attributed to a charge transfer from this Fe site towards its Ru neighbours. Such a substantial increase in magnetic moment due to electron charge transfer has not previously been reported in a Heusler alloy system.

Thermodynamic and corrosion study of Sm$_{1-x}$Mg$_x$Ni$_y$ (y = 3.5 or 3.8) compounds forming reversible hydrides

AB5 compounds (A = rare earth, B = transition metal) have been widely studied as anodes for Ni-MH applications. However, they have reached their technical limitations and the search for new promising materials with high capacity is foreseen. ABy compounds (2 < y < 5) are good candidates. They are made by stacking [AB5] and [A2B4] units along the c crystallographic axis. The latter unit allows a large increase in capacity, while the [AB5] unit provides good cycling stability. Consequently, the AB3.8 composition (i.e. A5B19 with three [AB5] for one [A2B4]) is expected to exhibit better cycling stability than the AB3.5 (i.e. A2B7 with two [AB5] for one [A2B4]). Furthermore, substitution of rare earth by light magnesium improves both the capacity and cycling stability. In this paper, we compare the hydrogenation and corrosion properties of two binary compounds SmNi$_{3.5}$ and SmNi$_{3.8}$ and two pseudo-binary ones (Sm,Mg)Ni$_{3.5}$ and (Sm,Mg)Ni$_{3.8}$. A better solid-gas cycling stability is highlighted for the binary SmNi$_{3.8}$. The pseudo-binary compounds also exhibit higher cycling stability than the binary ones. Furthermore, their resistance to corrosion was investigated.

Correlations between stacked structures and weak itinerant magnetic properties of La$_{2-x}$ Y$_x $ Ni$_7$ compounds

Hexagonal La$_2$Ni$_7$ and rhombohedral Y$_2$Ni$_7$ are weak itinerant antiferromagnet (wAFM) and ferromagnet (wFM), respectively. The crystal structure and magnetic properties of $A_2B_7$ intermetallic compounds ($A$ = La, Y, $B$ = Ni) have been investigated combining X-ray powder diffraction and magnetic measurements. The La$_{2-x}$Y$_x$Ni$_7$ intermetallic compounds with $0 \leq x \leq 1$ crystallize in the Ce$_{2}$Ni$_7$-type hexagonal structure with Y preferentially located in the [$AB_2$] units. The compounds with larger Y content ($1.2 \leq x < 2$) crystallize in both hexagonal and rhombohedral (Gd$_2$Co$_7$-type) structures with a progressive substitution of Y for La in the $A$ sites belonging to the [$AB_5$] units. Y$_2$Ni$_7$ crystallizes in the rhombohedral structure only. The average cell volume decreases linearly versus Y content, whereas the c/a ratio presents a minimum at $x = 1$ due to geometric constrains. The magnetic properties are strongly dependent on the structure type and the Y content. La$_{2}$Ni$_7$ displays a complex metamagnetic behavior with split AFM peaks. Compounds with x = 0.25 and 0.5 display a wAFM ground state and two metamagnetic transitions, the first one towards an intermediate wAFM state and the second one towards a FM state.T$_N$ and the second critical field increase with the Y content, indicating a stabilization of the AFM state. LaYNi$_7$, which is as the boundary between the two structure types, presents a very wFM state at low field and an AFM state as the applied field increases. All the compounds with $x > 1$ and containing a rhombohedral phase are wFM with $T_C$ = 53(2) K. In addition to the experimental studies, first principles calculations using spin polarization have been performed to interpret the evolution of both structural phase stability and magnetic ordering for $0 \leq x < 2$.

Relation between the weak itinerant magnetism in $A_2$Ni$_7$ compounds ($A$ = Y, La) and their stacked crystal structures

The weak itinerant magnetic properties of $A_2$Ni$_7$ compounds with $A$ = {Y, La} have been investigated using electronic band structure calculations in the relation with their polymorphic crystal structures. These compounds crystallizes in two structures resulting from the stacking of two and three blocks of [$A_2$Ni$_4$ + 2 $A$Ni$_5$] units for hexagonal $2H$-La$_2$Ni$_7$ (Ce$_2$Ni$_7$ type) and rhombohedral $3R$-Y$_2$Ni$_7$ (Gd$_2$Co$_7$ type) respectively. Experimentally, $2H$-La$_2$Ni$_7$ is a weak itinerant antiferromagnet whereas $3R$-Y$_2$Ni$_7$ is a weak itinerant ferromagnet. From the present first principles calculation within non-spin polarized state, both compounds present an electronic density of state with a sharp and narrow peak centered at the Fermi level corresponding to flat bands from $3d$-Ni. This induces a magnetic instability and both compounds are more stable in a ferromagnetic (FM) order compared to a paramagnetic state ($ΔE \simeq$ -35 meV/f.u.). The magnetic moment of each of the five Ni sites varies with their positions relative to the [$A_2$Ni$_4$] and [$A$Ni$_5$] units: they are minimum in the [$A_2$Ni$_4$] unit and maximum at the interface between two [$A$Ni$_5$] units. For $2H$-La$_2$Ni$_7$, an antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure has been proposed and found with an energy comparable to that of the FM state. This AFM structure is described by two FM unit blocks of opposite Ni spin sign separated by a non-magnetic layer at z = 0 and $\frac12$. The Ni ($2a$) atoms belonging to this intermediate layer are located in the [La$_2$Ni$_4$] unit and are at a center of symmetry of the hexagonal cell ($P6_3/mmc$) where the resultant molecular field is cancelled. Further non-collinear spin calculations have been performed to determine the Ni moment orientations which are found preferentially parallel to the $c$ axis for both FM and AFM structures.
