A Gneiting-Like Method for Constructing Positive Definite Functions on Metric Spaces

This paper is concerned with the construction of positive definite functions on a cartesian product of quasi-metric spaces using generalized Stieltjes and complete Bernstein functions. The results we prove are aligned with a well-established method of T. Gneiting to construct space-time positive definite functions and its many extensions. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the strict positive definiteness of the models are provided when the spaces are metric.

Relations between Schoenberg Coefficients on Real and Complex Spheres of Different Dimensions

Positive definite functions on spheres have received an increasing interest in many branches of mathematics and statistics. In particular, the Schoenberg sequences in the spectral representation of positive definite functions have been studied by several mathematicians in the last years. This paper provides a set of relations between Schoenberg sequences defined over real as well as complex spheres of different dimensions. We illustrate our findings describing an application to strict positive definiteness.

Strictly Positive Definite Functions on Compact Two-Point Homogeneous Spaces: the Product Alternative

For two continuous and isotropic positive definite kernels on the same compact two-point homogeneous space, we determine necessary and sufficient conditions in order that their product be strictly positive definite. We also provide a similar characterization for kernels on the space-time setting $G \times S^d$, where $G$ is a locally compact group and $S^d$ is the unit sphere in $\mathbb{R}^{d+1}$, keeping isotropy of the kernels with respect to the $S^d$ component. Among other things, these results provide new procedures for the construction of valid models for interpolation and approximation on compact two-point homogeneous spaces.

Strictly Positive Definite Kernels on a Product of Spheres II

We present, among other things, a necessary and sufficient condition for the strict positive definiteness of an isotropic and positive definite kernel on the cartesian product of a circle and a higher dimensional sphere. The result complements similar results previously obtained for strict positive definiteness on a product of circles [Positivity, to appear, arXiv:1505.01169] and on a product of high dimensional spheres [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 435 (2016), 286-301, arXiv:1505.03695].

Strictly positive definite kernels on a product of spheres

For the real, continuous, isotropic and positive definite kernels on a product of spheres, one may consider not only its usual strict positive definiteness but also strict positive definiteness restrict to the points of the product that have distinct components. In this paper, we provide a characterization for strict positive definiteness in these two cases, settling all the cases but those in which one of the spheres is a circle.

Generalized Convolution Roots of Positive Definite Kernels on Complex Spheres

Convolution is an important tool in the construction of positive definite kernels on a manifold. This contribution provides conditions on an $L^2$-positive definite and zonal kernel on the unit sphere of $\mathbb{C}^q$ in order that the kernel can be recovered as a generalized convolution root of an equally positive definite and zonal kernel.

Estimates for Fourier sums and eigenvalues of integral operators via multipliers on the sphere

We provide estimates for weighted Fourier sums of integrable functions defined on the sphere when the weights originate from a multiplier operator acting on the space where the function belongs. That implies refined estimates for weighted Fourier sums of integrable kernels on the sphere that satisfy an abstract Hölder condition based on a parameterized family of multiplier operators defining an approximate identity. This general estimation approach includes an important class of multipliers operators, namely, that defined by convolutions with zonal measures. The estimates are used to obtain decay rates for the eigenvalues of positive integral operators on L^2(Sm) and generated by a kernel satisfying the Hölder condition based on multiplier operators on L^2(Sm).

Traceability of positive integral operators in the absence of a metric

We investigate the traceability of positive integral operators on $L^2(X,μ)$ when $X$ is a Hausdorff locally compact second countable space and $μ$ is a non-degenerate, $σ$-finite and locally finite Borel measure. This setting includes other cases proved in the literature, for instance the one in which $X$ is a compact metric space and $μ$ is a special finite measure. The results apply to spheres, tori and other relevant subsets of the usual space $\mathbb{R}^m$.
