Asymptotic Behaviour of Semigroup Traces and Schatten Classes of Resolvents

Motivated by examples from physics and noncommutative geometry, given a generator $A$ of a Gibbs semigroup, we reexamine the relationship between the Schatten class of its resolvents and the behaviour of the norm-trace $\norm{e^{-tA}}_1\,$ when $t$ approaches zero. In addition to applying Tauberian results, we specifically investigate the compatibility of asymptotic behaviours with derivations and perturbations. Along the course of our study, we present a novel characterisation of Gibbs semigroups.

Operator-norm Trotter product formula on Banach spaces

In this paper we collect results concerning the {operator-norm} convergent {Trotter} product formula for two semigroups $\{\e^{- t A}\}_{t\geq 0}$, $\{\e^{- t B}\}_{t\geq 0}$, with densely defined generators $A$ and $B$ in a {Banach} space. Although the {strong} convergence in Banach space for contraction semigroups is known since the seminal paper by Trotter (1959), which after more than three decades was extended to convergence in the {operator-norm} topology in {Hilbert} spaces by Rogava (1993), the {operator-norm} convergence in a {Banach} space was established only in (2001).

Notes on the Chernoff estimate

The purpose of the present notes is to examine the following issues related to the the Chernoff estimate: (1) For contractions on a Banach space we modify the $\sqrt{n}$-estimate and apply it in the proof of the Chernoff product formula for $C_0$-semigroups in the \textit{strong} operator topology. (2) We use the idea of a {probabilistic} approach, proving the Chernoff estimate in the strong operator topology, to uplift it to the \textit{operator-norm} estimate for \textit{quasi-sectorial} contraction semigroups. (3) The operator-norm Chernoff estimate is applied to {quasi-sectorial} contraction semigroups for proving the operator-norm convergence of the \textit{Dunford-Segal} approximants.

Non-conventional Dynamical Bose Condensation

The paper presents a review of results concerning the non-conventional dynamical condensation versus conventional Bose-Einstein condensation, including the case of generalised van den Berg-Lewis-Pulé condensate. The review is based on detailed discussion of two models: a simple toy model and the Bogoliubov Weakly Imperfect Bose-Gas model, which was invented for explanation of superflfluidity of liquid 4He, but which is also instructive for analysis of non-conventional condensation regarding some recent interpretations of experimental data.

Bogoliubov quasi-averages: spontaneous symmetry breaking and algebra of fluctuations

The paper advocates the Bogoliubov method of quasi-averages for quantum systems. First, we elucidate its applications to study the phase transitions with Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking (SSB). To this aim we consider example of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in continuous systems. Our analysis of different type of generalised condensations demonstrates that the only physically reliable quantities are those that defined by Bogoliubov quasi-averages. In this connection we also give a solution of the problem posed by Lieb, Seiringer and Yngvason in [SY07]. Second, using the scaled Bogoliubov method of quasi-averages and taking the structural quantum phase transition as a basic example, we scrutinise a relation between SSB and the critical quantum fluctuations. Our analysis shows that again the quasi-averages give an adequate tool for description of the algebra of critical quantum fluctuation operators in the both commutative and noncommutative cases.

Remarks on the operator-norm convergence of the Trotter product formula

We revise the operator-norm convergence of the Trotter product formula for a pair {A,B} of generators of semigroups on a Banach space. Operator-norm convergence holds true if the dominating operator A generates a holomorphic contraction semigroup and B is a A-infinitesimally small generator of a contraction semigroup, in particular, if B is a bounded operator. Inspired by studies of evolution semigroups it is shown in the present paper that the operator-norm convergence generally fails even for bounded operators B if A is not a holomorphic generator. Moreover, it is shown that operator norm convergence of the Trotter product formula can be arbitrary slow.

Construction of dynamical semigroups by a functional regularisation à la Kato

A functional version of the Kato one-parametric regularisation for the construction of a dynamical semigroup generator of a relative bound one perturbation is introduced. It does not require that the minus generator of the unperturbed semigroup is a positivity preserving operator. The regularisation is illustrated by an example of a boson-number cut-off regularisation.

Convergence rate estimates for Trotter product approximations of solution operators for non-autonomous Cauchy problems

In the present paper we advocate the Howland-Evans approach to solution of the abstract non-autonomous Cauchy problem (non-ACP) in a separable Banach space X. The main idea is to reformulate this problem as an autonomous Cauchy problem (ACP) in a new Banach space L^p(I,X), consisting of X-valued functions on the time-interval I. The fundamental observation is a one-to-one correspondence between solution operators (propagators) for a non-ACP and the corresponding evolution semigroups for ACP in L^p(I,X). We show that the latter also allows to apply a full power of the operator-theoretical methods to scrutinise the non-ACP including the proof of the Trotter product approximation formulae with operator-norm estimate of the rate of convergence. The paper extends and improves some recent results in this direction in particular for Hilbert spaces.

On ergodic states, spontaneous symmetry breaking and the Bogoliubov quasi-averages

It is shown that Bogoliubov quasi-averages select the pure or ergodic states in the ergodic decomposition of the thermal (Gibbs) state. Our examples include quantum spin systems and many-body boson systems. As a consequence, we elucidate the problem of equivalence between Bose-Einstein condensation and the quasi-average spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) discussed for continuous boson systems. The multi-mode extended van den Berg-Lewis-Pulé condensation of type III demonstrates that the only physically reliable quantities are those that defined by Bogoliubov quasi-averages.

Dynamics of an Open System for Repeated Harmonic Perturbation

We use the Kossakowski-Lindblad-Davies formalism to consider an open system defined as the Markovian extension of one-mode quantum oscillator S, perturbed by a piecewise stationary harmonic interaction with a chain of oscillators C. The long-time asymptotic behaviour of various subsystems of S+C are obtained in the framework of the dual W-dynamical system approach.

Non-equilibrium current via geometric scatterers

We investigate non-equilibrium particle transport in the system consisting of a geometric scatterer and two leads coupled to heat baths with different chemical potentials. We derive expression for the corresponding current the carriers of which are fermions and analyze numerically its dependence of the model parameters in examples, where the scatterer has a rectangular or triangular shape.

Disordered Bose Einstein Condensates with Interaction

We study the effects of random scatterers on the ground state of the one-dimensional Lieb-Liniger model of interacting bosons on the unit interval in the Gross-Pitaevskii regime. We prove that Bose Einstein condensation survives even a strong random potential with a high density of scatterers. The character of the wave function of the condensate, however, depends in an essential way on the interplay between randomness and the strength of the two-body interaction. For low density of scatterers or strong interactions the wave function extends over the whole interval. High density of scatterers and weak interaction, on the other hand, leads to localization of the wave function in a fragmented subset of the interval.

Non-equilibrium states of a photon cavity pumped by an atomic beam

We consider a beam of two-level randomly excited atoms that pass one-by-one through a one-mode cavity. We show that in the case of an ideal cavity, i.e. no leaking of photons from the cavity, the pumping by the beam leads to an unlimited increase in the photon number in the cavity. We derive an expression for the mean photon number for all times. Taking into account leaking of the cavity, we prove that the mean photon number in the cavity stabilizes in time. The limiting state of the cavity in this case exists and it is independent of the initial state. We calculate the characteristic functional of this non-quasi-free non-equilibrium state. We also calculate the energy flux in both the ideal and open cavity and the entropy production for the ideal cavity.

Cayley transform applied to non-interacting quantum transport

We extend the Landauer-Büttiker formalism in order to accommodate both unitary and self-adjoint operators which are not bounded from below. We also prove that the pure point and singular continuous subspaces of the decoupled Hamiltonian do not contribute to the steady current. One of the physical applications is a stationary charge current formula for a system with four pseudo-relativistic semi-infinite leads and with an inner sample which is described by a Schrödinger operator defined on a bounded interval with dissipative boundary conditions. Another application is a current formula for electrons described by a one dimensional Dirac operator; here the system consists of two semi-infinite leads coupled through a point interaction at zero.

Random point field approach to analysis of anisotropic Bose-Einstein condensations

Position distributions of constituent particles of the perfect Bose-gas trapped in exponentially and polynomially anisotropic boxes are investigated by means of the boson random point fields (processes) and by the spatial random distribution of particle density. Our results include the case of \textit{generalised} Bose-Einstein Condensation. For exponentially anisotropic quasi two-dimensional system (SLAB), we obtain \textit{three} qualitatively different particle density distributions. They correspond to the \textit{normal} phase, the quasi-condensate phase (type III generalised condensation) and to the phase when the type III and the type I Bose condensations co-exist. An interesting feature is manifested by the type II generalised condensation in one-directional polynomially anisotropic system (BEAM). In this case the particle density distribution rests truly random even in the \textit{macroscopic} scaling limit.

The second critical point for the Perfect Bose gas in quasi-one-dimensional traps

We present a new model of quasi-one-dimensional trap with some unknown physical predictions about a second transition, including about a change in fractions of condensed coherence lengths due to the existence of a second critical temperature Tm < Tc. If this physical model is acceptable, we want to challenge experimental physicists in this regard.
