Iterating the Pimsner construction

For $A$ a $C^*$-algebra, $E_1, E_2$ two Hilbert bimodules over $A$, and a fixed isomorphism $χ: E_1\otimes_AE_2\to E_2\otimes_AE_1$, we consider the problem of computing the $K$-theory of the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra ${\mathcal O}_{E_2\otimes_A{\mathcal O}_{E_1}}$ obtained by extending the scalars and by iterating the Pimsner construction. The motivating examples are a commutative diagram of Douglas and Howe for the Toeplitz operators on the quarter plane, and the Toeplitz extensions associated by Pimsner and Voiculescu to compute the $K$-theory of a crossed product. The applications are for Hilbert bimodules arising from rank two graphs and from commuting endomorphisms of abelian $C^*$-algebras.

C*-algebras associated with interval maps

For each piecewise monotonic map tau of [0,1], we associate a pair of C*-algebras F_tau and O_tau and calculate their K-groups. The algebra F_tau is an AI-algebra. We characterize when F_tau and O_τare simple. In those cases, F_tau has a unique trace, and O_tau is purely infinite with a unique KMS-state. In the case that tau is Markov, these algebras include the Cuntz-Krieger algebras O_A, and the associated AF-algebras F_A. Other examples for which the K-groups are computed include tent maps, quadratic maps, multimodal maps, interval exchange maps, and beta-transformations. For the case of interval exchange maps and of beta-transformations, the C*-algebra O_tau coincides with the algebras defined by Putnam and Katayama-Matsumoto-Watatani respectively.

C*-algebras of commuting endomorphisms

Given a compact space X and two commuting continuous open surjective maps sigma_1, sigma_2 : X --> X, we construct certain C*-algebras that reflect the dynamics of the N^2-action. When the maps sigma_1, sigma_2 are local homeomorphisms, these are groupoid algebras, but in general, we will use a Cuntz-Pimsner algebra associated to a product system of Hilbert bimodules in the sense of Fowler. The motivating example for our construction is the dynamical system associated with a rank two graph by Kumjian and Pask. We consider also a two-dimensional subshift of Ledrappier, the case of two covering maps of the circle, and the two-dimensional Bernoulli shift.

C*-algebras associated with branched coverings

In this note we analyze the C*-algebra associated with a branched covering both as a groupoid C*-algebra and as a Cuntz-Pimsner algebra. We determine conditions when the algebra is simple and purely infinite. We indicate how to compute the K-theory of several examples, including one related to rational maps on the Riemann sphere.
