On Uniformly finitely extensible Banach spaces

We continue the study of Uniformly Finitely Extensible Banach spaces (in short, UFO) initiated in Moreno-Plichko, \emph{On automorphic Banach spaces}, Israel J. Math. 169 (2009) 29--45 and Castillo-Plichko, \emph{Banach spaces in various positions.} J. Funct. Anal. 259 (2010) 2098-2138. We show that they have the Uniform Approximation Property of Pełczyński and Rosenthal and are compactly extensible. We will also consider their connection with the automorphic space problem of Lindenstrauss and Rosenthal --do there exist automorphic spaces other than $c_0(I)$ and $\ell_2(I)$?-- showing that a space all whose subspaces are UFO must be automorphic when it is Hereditarily Indecomposable (HI), and a Hilbert space when it is either locally minimal or isomorphic to its square. We will finally show that most HI --among them, the super-reflexive HI space constructed by Ferenczi-- and asymptotically $\ell_2$ spaces in the literature cannot be automorphic.

Subsequential minimality in Gowers and Maurey spaces

We define block sequences $(x_n)$ in every block subspace of a variant of the space of Gowers and Maurey so that the map $x_{2n-1}\mapsto x_{2n} $ extends to an isomorphism. This implies the existence of a subsequentially minimal HI space, which solves a question in \cite{FR}.

Tightness of Banach spaces and Baire category

We prove several dichotomies on linear embeddings between Banach spaces. Given an arbitrary Banach space X with a basis, we show that the relations of isomorphism and bi-embedding are meager or co-meager on the Polish set of block-subspaces of X. We relate this result with tightness and minimality of Banach spaces. Examples and open questions are provided.

Displaying Polish groups on separable Banach spaces

A display of a topological group G on a Banach space X is a topological isomorphism of G with the isometry group Isom(X,||.||) for some equivalent norm ||.|| on X, where the latter group is equipped with the strong operator topology. Displays of Polish groups on separable real spaces are studied. It is proved that any closed subgroup of the infinite symmetric group S_\infty containing a non-trivial central involution admits a display on any of the classical spaces c0, C([0,1]), lp and Lp for 1 <=p <\infty. Also, for any Polsih group G, there exists a separable space X on which {-1,1} x G has a display.

On isometry groups and maximal symmetry

We study problems of maximal symmetry in Banach spaces. This is done by providing an analysis of the structure of small subgroups of the general linear group GL(X), where X is a separable reflexive Banach space. In particular, we provide the first known example of a Banach space X without any equivalent maximal norm, or equivalently such that GL(X) contains no maximal bounded subgroup. Moreover, this space X may be chosen to be super-reflexive.

Banach spaces without minimal subspaces - examples

We analyse several examples of separable Banach spaces, some of them new, and relate them to several dichotomies obtained in the previous paper Banach spaces without minimal subspaces, by classifying them according to which side of the dichotomies they fall. This paper may be seen as a more empirical continuation of Banach spaces without minimal subspaces, in which our stress is on the study of examples for the new classes of Banach spaces considered in that work.

Banach spaces without minimal subspaces

We prove three new dichotomies for Banach spaces à la W.T. Gowers' dichotomies. The three dichotomies characterise respectively the spaces having no minimal subspaces, having no subsequentially minimal basic sequences, and having no subspaces crudely finitely representable in all of their subspaces. We subsequently use these results to make progress on Gowers' program of classifying Banach spaces by finding characteristic spaces present in every space. Also, the results are used to embed any partial order of size $\aleph_1$ into the subspaces of any space without a minimal subspace ordered by isomorphic embeddability.

Countable groups of isometries on Banach spaces

A group G is representable in a Banach space X if G is isomorphic to the group of isometries on X in some equivalent norm. We prove that a countable group G is representable in a separable real Banach space X in several general cases, including when $G=\{-1,1\} \times H$, H finite and $\dim X \geq |H|$, or when G contains a normal subgroup with two elements and X is of the form c_0(Y) or $\ell_p(Y)$, $1 \leq p <+\infty$. This is a consequence of a result inspired by methods of S. Bellenot and stating that under rather general conditions on a separable real Banach space X and a countable bounded group G of isomorphisms on X containing -Id, there exists an equivalent norm on X for which G is equal to the group of isometries on X. We also extend methods of K. Jarosz to prove that any complex Banach space of dimension at least 2 may be renormed to admit only trivial real isometries, and that any real Banach space which is a cartesian square may be renormed to admit only trivial and conjugation real isometries. It follows that every real space of dimension at least 4 and with a complex structure up to isomorphism may be renormed to admit exactly two complex structures up to isometry, and that every real cartesian square may be renormed to admit a unique complex structure up to isometry.

Even infinite dimensional real Banach spaces

This article is a continuation of a paper of the first author \cite{F} about complex structures on real Banach spaces. We define a notion of even infinite dimensional real Banach space, and prove that there exist even spaces, including HI or unconditional examples from \cite{F} and $C(K)$ examples due to Plebanek \cite{P}. We extend results of \cite{F} relating the set of complex structures up to isomorphism on a real space to a group associated to inessential operators on that space, and give characterizations of even spaces in terms of this group. We also generalize results of \cite{F} about totally incomparable complex structures to essentially incomparable complex structures, while showing that the complex version of a space defined by S. Argyros and A. Manoussakis \cite{AM} provide examples of essentially incomparable complex structures which are not totally incomparable.

The complexity of classifying separable Banach spaces up to isomorphism

It is proved that the relation of isomorphism between separable Banach spaces is a complete analytic equivalence relation, i.e., that any analytic equivalence relation Borel reduces to it. Thus, separable Banach spaces up to isomorphism provide complete invariants for a great number of mathematical structures up to their corresponding notion of isomorphism. The same is shown to hold for (1) complete separable metric spaces up to uniform homeomorphism, (2) separable Banach spaces up to Lipschitz isomorphism, and (3) up to (complemented) biembeddability, (4) Polish groups up to topological isomorphism, and (5) Schauder bases up to permutative equivalence. Some of the constructions rely on methods recently developed by S. Argyros and P. Dodos.

Some strongly bounded classes of Banach spaces

We show that the classes of separable reflexive Banach spaces and of spaces with separable dual are strongly bounded. This gives a new proof of a recent result of E. Odell and Th. Schlumprecht, asserting that there exists a separable reflexive Banach space containing isomorphic copies of every separable uniformly convex Banach spaces.

A Banach space dichotomy for quotients of subspaces

A Banach space $X$ with a Schauder basis is defined to have the restricted quotient hereditarily indecomposable (QHI) property if $X/Y$ is hereditarily indecomposable (HI) for any infinite codimensional subspace $Y$ with a successive finite-dimensional decomposition on the basis of $X$. A reflexive space with the restricted QHI property is in particular HI, has HI dual, and is saturated with subspaces which are HI and have HI dual. The following dichotomy theorem is proved: any infinite dimensional Banach space contains a quotient of subspace which either has an unconditional basis, or has the restricted QHI property.

Real hereditarily indecomposable Banach spaces and uniqueness of complex structure

There exists a real hereditarily indecomposable Banach space $X$ such that the quotient space $L(X)/S(X)$ by strictly singular operators is isomorphic to the complex field (resp. to the quaternionic division algebra). Up to isomorphism, the example with complex quotient space has exactly two complex structures, which are conjugate, totally incomparable, and both hereditarily indecomposable. So there exist two Banach spaces which are isometric as real spaces but totally incomparable as complex spaces. This extends results of J. Bourgain and S. Szarek from 1986. The quaternionic example, on the other hand, has unique complex structure up to isomorphism; there also exists a space with an unconditional basis, non isomorphic to $l_2$, which admits a unique complex structure. These two examples answer a question of Szarek.

On the number of non permutatively equivalent sequences in a Banach space

This paper contains results concerning the Borel reduction of the relation $E_0$ of eventual agreement between sequences of 0's and 1's, to the relation of permutative equivalence between basic sequences in a Banach space. For more clarity in this abstract, we state these results in terms of classification by real numbers. If $R$ is some (analytic) equivalence relation on a Polish space $X$, it is said that $R$ is classifiable (by real numbers) if there exists a Borel map $g$ from $X$ into the real line such that $x R x'$ if and only if $g(x)=g(x')$. If $R$ is not classifiable, there must be $2^ω$ $R$-classes. It is conjectured that any separable Banach space such that isomorphism between its subspaces is classifiable must be isomorphic to $l_2$. We prove the following results: - the relation $\sim^{perm}$ of permutative equivalence between normalized basic sequences is analytic non Borel, - if $X$ is a Banach space with a Schauder basis $(e_n)$, such that $\sim^{perm}$ between normalized block-sequences of $X$ is classifiable, then $X$ is $c_0$ or $\ell_p$ saturated for some $1 \leq p <+\infty$, - if $(e_n)$ is shrinking unconditional, and $\sim^{perm}$ between normalized disjointly supported sequences in $X$, resp. in $X^*$, are classifiable, then $(e_n)$ is equivalent to the unit vector basis of $c_0$ or $\ell_p$, - if $(e_n)$ is unconditional, then either $X$ is isomorphic to $l_2$, or $X$ contains $2^ω$ subspaces or $2^ω$ quotients which are spanned by pairwise non permutatively equivalent normalized unconditional bases.

Minimality, homogeneity and topological 0-1 laws for subspaces of a Banach space

If a Banach space is saturated with basic sequences whose linear span embeds into the linear span of any subsequence, then it contains a minimal subspace. It follows that any Banach space is either ergodic or contains a minimal subspace. For a Banach space $X$ with an (unconditional) basis, topological 0-1 law type dichotomies are stated for block-subspaces of $X$ as well as for subspaces of $X$ with a successive FDD on its basis. A uniformity principle for properties of block-sequences, results about block-homogeneity, and a possible method to construct a Banach space with an unconditional basis, which has a complemented subspace without an unconditional basis, are deduced.

Some equivalence relations which are Borel reducible to isomorphism between separable Banach spaces

We improve the known results about the complexity of the relation of isomorphism between separable Banach spaces up to Borel reducibility, and we achieve this using the classical spaces $c_0$, $\ell_p$ and $L_p$, $1 \leq p <2$. More precisely, we show that the relation $E_{K_σ}$ is Borel reducible to isomorphism and complemented biembeddability between subspaces of $c_0$ or $\ell_p, 1 \leq p <2$. We show that the relation $E_{K_σ} \otimes =^+$ is Borel reducible to isomorphism, complemented biembeddability, and Lipschitz equivalence between subspaces of $L_p, 1 \leq p <2$.

Some results about the Schroeder-Bernstein Property for separable Banach spaces

We construct a continuum of mutually non-isomorphic separable Banach spaces which are complemented in each other. Consequently, the Schroeder-Bernstein Index of any of these spaces is $2^{\aleph_0}$. Our construction is based on a Banach space introduced by W. T. Gowers and B. Maurey in 1997. We also use classical descriptive set theory methods, as in some work of V. Ferenczi and C. Rosendal, to improve some results of P. G. Casazza and of N. J. Kalton on the Schroeder-Bernstein Property for spaces with an unconditional finite-dimensional Schauder decomposition.

Ergodic Banach Spaces

We show that any Banach space contains a continuum of non isomorphic subspaces or a minimal subspace. We define an ergodic Banach space $X$ as a space such that $E_0$ Borel reduces to isomorphism on the set of subspaces of $X$, and show that every Banach space is either ergodic or contains a subspace with an unconditional basis $ which is complementably universal for the family of its block-subspaces. We also use our methods to get uniformity results; for example, in combination with a result of B. Maurey, V. Milman and N. Tomczak-Jaegermann, we show that an unconditional basis of a Banach space, of which every block-subspace is complemented, must be asymptotically $c_0$ or $l_p$.
