The Thermal Scalar and Random Walks in AdS3 and BTZ

We analyze near-Hagedorn thermodynamics of strings in the WZW $AdS_3$ model. We compute the thermal spectrum of all primaries and find the thermal scalar explicitly in the string spectrum using CFT twist techniques. Then we use the link to the Euclidean WZW BTZ black hole and write down the Euclidean BTZ spectrum. We give a Hamiltonian interpretation of the thermal partition function of angular orbifolds where we find a reappearance of discrete states that dominate the partition function. Using these results, we discuss the nature of the thermal scalar in the WZW BTZ model. As a slight generalization of the angular orbifolds, we discuss the $AdS_3$ string gas with a non-zero chemical potential corresponding to angular momentum around the spatial cigar. For this model as well, we determine the thermal spectrum and the Hagedorn temperature as a function of chemical potential. Finally the nature of $α'$ corrections to the $AdS_3$ thermal scalar action is analyzed and we find the random walk behavior of highly excited strings in this particular $AdS_3$ background.

Chiral Magnetic Effect in Hydrodynamic Approximation

We review derivations of the chiral magnetic effect (ChME) in hydrodynamic approximation. The reader is assumed to be familiar with the basics of the effect. The main challenge now is to account for the strong interactions between the constituents of the fluid. The main result is that the ChME is not renormalized: in the hydrodynamic approximation it remains the same as for non-interacting chiral fermions moving in an external magnetic field. The key ingredients in the proof are general laws of thermodynamics and the Adler-Bardeen theorem for the chiral anomaly in external electromagnetic fields. The chiral magnetic effect in hydrodynamics represents a macroscopic manifestation of a quantum phenomenon (chiral anomaly). Moreover, one can argue that the current induced by the magnetic field is dissipation free and talk about a kind of "chiral superconductivity". More precise description is a ballistic transport along magnetic field taking place in equilibrium and in absence of a driving force. The basic limitation is exact chiral limit while the temperature--excitingly enough- does not seemingly matter. What is still lacking, is a detailed quantum microscopic picture for the ChME in hydrodynamics. Probably, the chiral currents propagate through lower-dimensional defects, like vortices in superfluid. In case of superfluid, the prediction for the chiral magnetic effect remains unmodified although the emerging dynamical picture differs from the standard one.

High orders perturbation theory and dual models for Yang-Mills theories

We start with the QCD sum rules which are originally based on the idea that it is the power-like corrections to the parton model which are related to the confinement. The naive use of the Operator Product Expansion ensures that there is a 'gap' in the powers of $Λ_{QCD}$ which miss the quadratic terms and start with the quartic term, proportional to the gluon condensate, $<(G_{μν}^a)^2>$. We review how this hypothesis stood against various checks through the last three decades and how it was modified through inclusion of the missing link, that is quadratic corrections. In field theoretic language the quadratic corrections are dual to long perturbative series. In the dual description, the quadratic corrections are conveniently parameterized in terms of the metric in extra dimensions. We emphasize that the dual models do not incorporate the so called infrared renormalon.

Gluon Condensate, Wilson Loops and Gauge/String Duality

We test gauge/string duality by evaluating expectation values of small Wilson loops in pure Yang-Mills theories. On the gauge-theory side, there exists rich phenomenology. The dual formulation provides with a universal language to evaluate the gluon condensate and quadratic correction in terms of the metric in the fifth coordinate. Quantitatively, the estimated value of the gluon condensate is approximately 0.010 GeV^4.

On Heavy-Quark Free Energies, Entropies, Polyakov Loop, and AdS/QCD

In this paper we explore some of the features of a heavy quark-antiquark pair at finite temperature using a five-dimensional framework nowadays known as AdS/QCD. We shall show that the resulting behavior is consistent with our qualitative expectations of thermal gauge theory. Some of the results are in good agreement with the lattice data that provides additional evidence for the validity of the proposed model.

Heavy-Quark Potentials and AdS/QCD

We give an example of modeling phenomenological heavy-quark potentials in a five-dimensional framework nowadays known as AdS/QCD. In particular we emphasize the absence of infrared renormalons.
