Sparse Inpainting and Isotropy

Sparse inpainting techniques are gaining in popularity as a tool for cosmological data analysis, in particular for handling data which present masked regions and missing observations. We investigate here the relationship between sparse inpainting techniques using the spherical harmonic basis as a dictionary and the isotropy properties of cosmological maps, as for instance those arising from cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments. In particular, we investigate the possibility that inpainted maps may exhibit anisotropies in the behaviour of higher-order angular polyspectra. We provide analytic computations and simulations of inpainted maps for a Gaussian isotropic model of CMB data, suggesting that the resulting angular trispectrum may exhibit small but non-negligible deviations from isotropy.

The Stochastic Properties of $\ell^1$-Regularized Spherical Gaussian Fields

Convex regularization techniques are now widespread tools for solving inverse problems in a variety of different frameworks. In some cases, the functions to be reconstructed are naturally viewed as realizations from random processes; an important question is thus whether such regularization techniques preserve the properties of the underlying probability measures. We focus here on a case which has produced a very lively debate in the cosmological literature, namely Gaussian and isotropic spherical random fields, and we prove that Gaussianity and isotropy are not conserved in general under convex regularization over a Fourier dictionary, such as the orthonormal system of spherical harmonics.

On the Limiting Behaviour of Needlets Polyspectra

This paper provides quantitative Central Limit Theorems for nonlinear transforms of spherical random fields, in the high frequency limit. The sequences of fields that we consider are represented as smoothed averages of spherical Gaussian eigenfunctions and can be viewed as random coefficients from continuous wavelets/needlets; as such, they are of immediate interest for spherical data analysis. In particular, we focus on so-called needlets polyspectra, which are popular tools for nonGaussianity analysis in the astrophysical community, and on the area of excursion sets. Our results are based on Stein-Maliavin approximations for nonlinear transforms of Gaussian fields, and on an explicit derivation on the high-frequency limit of their variances, which may have some independent interest.

On the asymptotic behavior of the hyperbolic Brownian motion

The main results in this paper concern large and moderate deviations for the radial component of a $n$-dimensional hyperbolic Brownian motion (for $n\geq 2$) on the Poincaré half-space. We also investigate the asymptotic behavior of the hitting probability $P_η(T_{η_1}^{(n)}<\infty)$ of a ball of radius $η_1$, as the distance $η$ of the starting point of the hyperbolic Brownian motion goes to infinity.

On the most visited sites of planar Brownian motion

Let (B_t : t > 0) be a planar Brownian motion and define gauge functions $ϕ_α(s)=log(1/s)^{-α}$ for $α>0$. If $α<1$ we show that almost surely there exists a point x in the plane such that $H^{ϕ_α}({t > 0 : B_t=x})>0$, but if $α>1$ almost surely $H^{ϕ_α} ({t > 0 : B_t=x})=0$ simultaneously for all $x\in R^2$. This resolves a longstanding open problem posed by S.,J. Taylor in 1986.

Travelling Randomly on the Poincaré Half-Plane with a Pythagorean Compass

A random motion on the Poincaré half-plane is studied. A particle runs on the geodesic lines changing direction at Poisson-paced times. The hyperbolic distance is analyzed, also in the case where returns to the starting point are admitted. The main results concern the mean hyperbolic distance (and also the conditional mean distance) in all versions of the motion envisaged. Also an analogous motion on orthogonal circles of the sphere is examined and the evolution of the mean distance from the starting point is investigated.

Cascades of Particles Moving at Finite Velocity in Hyperbolic Spaces

A branching process of particles moving at finite velocity over the geodesic lines of the hyperbolic space (Poincaré half-plane and Poincaré disk) is examined. Each particle can split into two particles only once at Poisson paced times and deviates orthogonally when splitted. At time $t$, after $N(t)$ Poisson events, there are $N(t)+1$ particles moving along different geodesic lines. We are able to obtain the exact expression of the mean hyperbolic distance of the center of mass of the cloud of particles. We derive such mean hyperbolic distance from two different and independent ways and we study the behavior of the relevant expression as $t$ increases and for different values of the parameters $c$ (hyperbolic velocity of motion) and $λ$ (rate of reproduction). The mean hyperbolic distance of each moving particle is also examined and a useful representation, as the distance of a randomly stopped particle moving over the main geodesic line, is presented.

Hitting spheres on hyperbolic spaces

For a hyperbolic Brownian motion on the Poincaré half-plane $\mathbb{H}^2$, starting from a point of hyperbolic coordinates $z=(η, α)$ inside a hyperbolic disc $U$ of radius $\barη$, we obtain the probability of hitting the boundary $\partial U$ at the point $(\bar η,\bar α)$. For $\barη \to \infty$ we derive the asymptotic Cauchy hitting distribution on $\partial \mathbb{H}^2$ and for small values of $η$ and $\bar η$ we obtain the classical Euclidean Poisson kernel. The exit probabilities $\mathbb{P}_z\{T_{η_1}<T_{η_2}\}$ from a hyperbolic annulus in $\mathbb{H}^2$ of radii $η_1$ and $η_2$ are derived and the transient behaviour of hyperbolic Brownian motion is considered. Similar probabilities are calculated also for a Brownian motion on the surface of the three dimensional sphere. For the hyperbolic half-space $\mathbb{H}^n$ we obtain the Poisson kernel of a ball in terms of a series involving Gegenbauer polynomials and hypergeometric functions. For small domains in $\mathbb{H}^n$ we obtain the $n$-dimensional Euclidean Poisson kernel. The exit probabilities from an annulus are derived also in the $n$-dimensional case.

Joint distribution of the process and its sojourn time for pseudo-processes governed by high-order heat equation

Consider the high-order heat-type equation $\partial u/\partial t=\pm \partial^N u/\partial x^N$ for an integer $N>2$ and introduce the related Markov pseudo-process $(X(t))_{t\ge 0}$. In this paper, we study the sojourn time $T(t)$ in the interval $[0,+\infty)$ up to a fixed time $t$ for this pseudo-process. We provide explicit expressions for the joint distribution of the couple $(T(t),X(t))$.

Some Darling-Siegert relationships connected with random flights

We derive in detail four important results on integrals of Bessel functions from which three combinatorial identities are extracted. We present the probabilistic interpretation of these identities in terms of different types of random walks, including asymmetric ones. This work extends the results of a previous paper concerning the Darling-Siegert interpretation of similar formulas emerging in the analysis of random flights.
