The Evolution of O I over 3.2 < z < 6.5: Reionization of the Circumgalactic Medium

We present a survey for metal absorption systems traced by neutral oxygen over $3.2 < z < 6.5$. Our survey uses Keck/ESI and VLT/X-Shooter spectra of 199 QSOs with redshifts up to 6.6. In total we detect 74 O I absorbers, of which 57 are separated from the background QSO by more than 5000 km/s. We use a maximum likelihood approach to fit the distribution of O I $λ$1302 equivalent widths in bins of redshift, and from this determine the evolution in number density of absorbers with $W_{1302} > 0.05$ angstroms. We find that the number density does not monotonically increase with decreasing redshift, as would naively be expected from the buildup of metal-enriched circumgalactic gas with time. The number density over $4.9 < z < 5.7$ is a factor of 1.7--4.1 lower (68% confidence) than over $5.7 < z < 6.5$, with a lower value at $z < 5.7$ favored with 99% confidence. This decrease suggests that the fraction of metals in a low-ionization phase is larger at $z \sim 6$ than at lower redshifts. Absorption from highly ionized metals traced by C IV is also weaker in higher-redshift O I systems, supporting this picture. The evolution of O I absorbers implies that metal-enriched circumgalactic gas at $z \sim 6$ is undergoing an ionization transition driven by a strengthening ultraviolet background. This in turn suggests that the reionization of the diffuse intergalactic medium may still be ongoing at or only recently ended by this epoch.

Data Analysis for Precision Spectroscopy: the ESPRESSO Case

ESPRESSO is an extremely stable high-resolution spectrograph which is currently being developed for the ESO VLT. With its groundbreaking characteristics it is aimed to be a "science machine", i.e. a fully-integrated instrument to directly extract science information from the observations. In particular, ESPRESSO will be the first ESO instrument to be equipped with a dedicated tool for the analysis of data, the Data Analysis Software (DAS), consisting in a number of recipes to analyze both stellar and quasar spectra. Through the new ESO Reflex GUI, the DAS (which will implement new algorithms to analyze quasar spectra) is aimed to get over the shortcomings of the existing software providing multiple iteration modes and full interactivity with the data.

Field tests for the ESPRESSO data analysis software

The data analysis software (DAS) for VLT ESPRESSO is aimed to set a new benchmark in the treatment of spectroscopic data towards the extremely-large-telescope era, providing carefully designed, fully interactive recipes to take care of complex analysis operations (e.g. radial velocity estimation in stellar spectra, interpretation of the absorption features in quasar spectra). A few months away from the instrument's first light, the DAS is now mature for science validation, with most algorithms already implemented and operational. In this paper, I will showcase the DAS features which are currently employed on high-resolution HARPS and UVES spectra to assess the scientific reliability of the recipes and their range of application. I will give a glimpse on the science that will be possible when ESPRESSO data become available, with a particular focus on the novel approach that has been adopted to simultaneously fit the emission continuum and the absorption lines in the Lyman-alpha forest of quasar spectra.

From ESPRESSO to the future -- Analysis of QSO spectra with the Astrocook package

The ESPRESSO instrument, to be commissioned in the next months at the ESO VLT, is bound to became a landmark in the field of high-resolution optical spectroscopy, both for its ground-breaking science objectives (search for Earth-like exoplanets; measure of a possible variation of fundamental constants) and for its novel approach to data treatment. For the first time for an ESO instrument, scientific information will be extracted in real time by a dedicated Data Analysis Software (DAS), which includes several interactive workflows to handle the typical analysis cases in stellar and QSO spectroscopy. Data analysis tools in the oncoming ELT era will face very demanding requirements from compelling science case, such as the Sandage Test: the need of handling larger data sizes with a higher degree of accuracy, and the possibility to compare observations and simulated data on the fly. To this purpose, we are currently porting the solutions developed for ESPRESSO to a wider framework, integrating the algorithms within a full-fledged set of Python modules. The project, named "Astrocook", is aimed to provide a set of high-level, instrument-agnostic procedures to automatically extract physical information from the data.

New Constraints on the free-streaming of warm dark matter from intermediate and small scale Lyman-$α$ forest data

We present new measurements of the free-streaming of warm dark matter (WDM) from Lyman-$α$ flux-power spectra. We use data from the medium resolution, intermediate redshift XQ-100 sample observed with the X-shooter spectrograph ($z=3 - 4.2$) and the high-resolution, high-redshift sample used in Viel et al. (2013) obtained with the HIRES/MIKE spectrographs ($z=4.2 - 5.4$). Based on further improved modelling of the dependence of the Lyman-$α$ flux-power spectrum on the free-streaming of dark matter, cosmological parameters, as well as the thermal history of the intergalactic medium (IGM) with hydrodynamical simulations, we obtain the following limits, expressed as the equivalent mass of thermal relic WDM particles. The XQ-100 flux power spectrum alone gives a lower limit of 1.4 keV, the re-analysis of the HIRES/MIKE sample gives 4.1 keV while the combined analysis gives our best and significantly strengthened lower limit of 5.3 keV (all 2$σ$ C.L.). The further improvement in the joint analysis is partly due to the fact that the two data sets have different degeneracies between astrophysical and cosmological parameters that are broken when the data sets are combined, and more importantly on chosen priors on the thermal evolution. These results all assume that the temperature evolution of the IGM can be modelled as a power law in redshift. Allowing for a non-smooth evolution of the temperature of the IGM with sudden temperature changes of up to 5000K reduces the lower limit for the combined analysis to 3.5 keV. A WDM with smaller thermal relic masses would require, however, a sudden temperature jump of $5000\,K$ or more in the narrow redshift interval $z=4.6-4.8$, in disagreement with observations of the thermal history based on high-resolution resolution Lyman-$α$ forest data and expectations for photo-heating and cooling in the low density IGM at these redshifts.

The Lyman-alpha forest power spectrum from the XQ-100 Legacy Survey

We present the Lyman-$α$ flux power spectrum measurements of the XQ-100 sample of quasar spectra obtained in the context of the European Southern Observatory Large Programme "Quasars and their absorption lines: a legacy survey of the high redshift universe with VLT/XSHOOTER". Using $100$ quasar spectra with medium resolution and signal-to-noise ratio we measure the power spectrum over a range of redshifts $z = 3 - 4.2$ and over a range of scales $k = 0.003 - 0.06\,\mathrm{s\,km^{-1}}$. The results agree well with the measurements of the one-dimensional power spectrum found in the literature. The data analysis used in this paper is based on the Fourier transform and has been tested on synthetic data. Systematic and statistical uncertainties of our measurements are estimated, with a total error (statistical and systematic) comparable to the one of the BOSS data in the overlapping range of scales, and smaller by more than $50\%$ for higher redshift bins ($z>3.6$) and small scales ($k > 0.01\,\mathrm{s\,km^{-1}}$). The XQ-100 data set has the unique feature of having signal-to-noise ratios and resolution intermediate between the two data sets that are typically used to perform cosmological studies, i.e. BOSS and high-resolution spectra (e.g. UVES/VLT or HIRES). More importantly, the measured flux power spectra span the high redshift regime which is usually more constraining for structure formation models.

Nature and statistical properties of quasar associated absorption systems in the XQ-100 Legacy Survey

We statistically study the physical properties of a sample of narrow absorption line (NAL) systems looking for empirical evidences to distinguish between intrinsic and intervening NALs without taking into account any a priori definition or velocity cut-off. We analyze the spectra of 100 quasars with 3.5 < z$\rm_{em}$ < 4.5, observed with X-shooter/VLT in the context of the XQ-100 Legacy Survey. We detect a $\sim$ 8 $σ$ excess in the number density of absorbers within 10,000 km/s of the quasar emission redshift with respect to the random occurrence of NALs. This excess does not show a dependence on the quasar bolometric luminosity and it is not due to the redshift evolution of NALs. It extends far beyond the standard 5000 km/s cut-off traditionally defined for associated absorption lines. We propose to modify this definition, extending the threshold to 10,000 km/s when also weak absorbers (equivalent width < 0.2 Å) are considered. We infer NV is the ion that better traces the effects of the quasar ionization field, offering the best statistical tool to identify intrinsic systems. Following this criterion we estimate that the fraction of quasars in our sample hosting an intrinsic NAL system is 33 percent. Lastly, we compare the properties of the material along the quasar line of sight, derived from our sample, with results based on close quasar pairs investigating the transverse direction. We find a deficiency of cool gas (traced by CII) along the line of sight associated with the quasar host galaxy, in contrast with what is observed in the transverse direction.

Model-independent evidence in favor of an end to reionization by z~6

We present new upper limits on the volume-weighted neutral hydrogen fraction, , at z~5-6 derived from spectroscopy of bright quasars. The fraction of the Lyman-alpha and Lyman-beta forests that is "dark" (with zero flux) provides the only model-independent upper limit on , requiring no assumptions about the physical conditions in the intergalactic medium or the quasar's unabsorbed UV continuum. In this work we update our previous results using a larger sample (22 objects) of medium-depth (~ few hours) spectra of high-redshift quasars obtained with the Magellan, MMT, and VLT. This significantly improves the upper bound on derived from dark pixel analysis to <= 0.06 + 0.05 (1σ) at z=5.9, and <= 0.04 + 0.05 (1σ) at z=5.6. These results provide robust constraints for theoretical models of reionization, and provide the strongest available evidence that reionization has completed (or is very nearly complete) by z~6.

The ESO UVES Advanced Data Products Quasar Sample - III. Evidence of Bimodality in the [N/alpha] Distribution

We report here a study of nitrogen and $α$-capture element (O, S, and Si) abundances in 18 Damped Ly$α$ Absorbers (DLAs) and sub-DLAs drawn from the ESO-UVES Advanced Data Products (EUADP) database. We report 9 new measurements, 5 upper and 4 lower limits of nitrogen that when compiled with available nitrogen measurements from the literature makes a sample of 108 systems. The extended sample presented here confirms the [N/$α$] bimodal behaviour suggested in previous studies. Three-quarter of the systems show $\langle$[N/$α$]$\rangle=-0.85$ ($\pm$0.20 dex) and one-quarter ratios are clustered at $\langle$[N/$α$]$\rangle= -1.41$ ($\pm$0.14 dex). The high [N/$α$] plateau is consistent with the HII regions of dwarf irregular and blue compact dwarf galaxies although extended to lower metallicities and could be interpreted as the result of a primary nitrogen production by intermediate mass stars. The low [N/$α$] values are the lowest ever observed in any astrophysical site. In spite of this fact, even lower values could be measured with the present instrumentation, but we do not find them below [N/$α$] $\approx$ $-1.7$. This suggests the presence of a floor in [N/$α$] abundances, which along with the lockstep increase of N and Si may indicate a primary nitrogen production from fast rotating, massive stars in relatively young or unevolved systems.

Nitrogen Abundances in Damped Ly-alpha Absorbers

Nitrogen is thought to have both primary and secondary origins depending on whether the seed carbon and oxygen are produced by the star itself (primary) or already present in the interstellar medium (secondary) from which star forms. DLA and sub-DLA systems with typical metallicities of -3.0<Z/Z_sun<-0.5 are excellent tools to study nitrogen production. We made a search for nitrogen in the ESO-UVES advanced data products (EUADP) database. In the EUADP database, we find 10 new measurements and 9 upper limits of nitrogen. We further compiled DLA/sub-DLA data from the literature with estimates available of nitrogen and alpha-elements. This yields a total of 98 systems, i.e. the largest nitrogen abundance sample investigated so far. In agreement with previous studies, we indeed find a bimodal [N/alpha] behaviour: three-quarter systems show a mean value of [N/alpha]=-0.87 with a scatter of 0.21 dex and one-quarter shows ratios clustered at [N/alpha]=-1.43 with a lower dispersion of 0.13 dex. The high [N/alpha] group is consistent with the blue compact dwarves and dwarf irregular galaxies, suggesting primary nitrogen production. The low [N/alpha] group is the lowest ever observed in any astrophysical site and probably provides an evidence of the primary production by fast rotating massive stars in young sites. Moreover, we find a transition between the two [N/alpha] groups around [N/H]=-2.5. The transition is not abrupt and there are a few systems lying in the transition region. Additional observations of DLAs/sub-DLAs below [N/H]<-2.5 would provide more clues.

Galactic Winds in Cosmological Simulations of the Circumgalactic Medium

(Abridged) We explore new observationally-constrained sub-resolution models of galactic outflows and investigate their impact on the circumgalactic medium (CGM) over redshifts z = 2 - 4. We perform cosmological hydrodynamic simulations, including star formation, chemical enrichment, and four cases of SNe-driven outflows: no wind (NW), an energy-driven constant velocity wind (CW), a radially varying wind (RVWa) where the outflow velocity has a positive correlation with galactocentric distance (r), and a RVW with additional dependence on halo mass (RVWb). Overall, we find that the outflows expel metal-enriched gas away from galaxies, significantly quench star formation, and enrich the CGM. At z = 2, the radial profiles of gas properties around galaxy centers are most sensitive to the choice of the wind model for halo masses (10^9 - 10^11) M_sun. We infer that the RVWb model is similar to the NW case, except that it substantially enriches the CGM: the carbon metallicity (Z_C) is 10 times higher in RVWb than in NW at r > R_200; and the warm gas of 10^4 - 10^5 K and delta < 100 is enriched to 50 times higher than in NW. We also find that the impact of models CW and RVWa are similar, with the following differences. RVWa causes a greater suppression of star formation rate at z < 5, and has a higher fraction of low-density (delta < 10), warm-hot (10^4 - 10^6 K) gas than in CW. Outflows in CW produce a higher and earlier enrichment of some IGM phases than RVWa. By visual inspection, we note that the RVWa model shows more pronounced bipolar outflows and galactic disks. We present fitting formulae for [Z_C-delta] and [Z_C-r], also for the abundance of CIV as a function of r. We predict observational diagnostics to distinguish between different outflow scenarios: Z_C of the CGM gas at r = (30 - 300) kpc/h comoving, and CIV fraction of the inner gas at r < (4 - 5) kpc/h comoving.

When two become one: an apparent QSO pair turns out to be a single quasar

We report on our serendipitous discovery that the objects Q 01323-4037 and Q 0132-4037, listed in the Véron-Cetty & Véron catalog (2006) as two different quasars, are actually a quasar and a star. We briefly discuss the origin of the misidentification, and provide a refined measurement of the quasar redshift.

X-shooter observations of QSO pairs

Observations of quasar pairs represent a powerful tool in the study of the intergalactic medium, providing in particular information on the quasar radiative feedback not only along the line of sight, but also in the transverse direction. In this paper, we present the spectra of the four quasar pairs we observed so far with X-shooter, and we discuss two individual spectra affected by the presence of a close quasar in the foreground.

A decline and fall in the future of Italian Astronomy?

On May 27th 2010, the Italian astronomical community learned with concern that the National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) was going to be suppressed, and that its employees were going to be transferred to the National Research Council (CNR). It was not clear if this applied to all employees (i.e. also to researchers hired on short-term contracts), and how this was going to happen in practice. In this letter, we give a brief historical overview of INAF and present a short chronicle of the few eventful days that followed. Starting from this example, we then comment on the current situation and prospects of astronomical research in Italy.

The rise of the C IV mass density at z<2.5

The cosmic evolution of the metal content of the intergalactic medium puts stringent constraints on the properties of galactic outflows and on the nature of UV background. In this paper, we present a new measure of the redshift evolution of the mass density of C IV, Omega_CIV, in the interval 1.5 < z < 4 based on a sample of more than 1500 C IV lines with column densities 10^{12} < N(CIV) < 10^{15} cm^{-2}. This sample more than doubles the absorption redshift path covered in the range z<2.5 by previous samples. The result shows a significant increase of Omega_CIV towards the lower redshifts at variance with the previously pictured constant behaviour.
