NovaMoon: A Strategic Lunar Reference Station for Positioning, Timing, and Largely Enhanced Science in the Earth-Moon System

The renewed interest in lunar exploration and the development of future lunar communication and navigation services highlight the need for a precise, stable, and interoperable geodetic and timing infrastructure on the Moon. NovaMoon, proposed as a scientific and navigation payload for ESA's Argonaut lander, is designed as a lunar-based local differential, geodetic, and timing station supporting both operational needs in the Moon's south polar region and a broad range of scientific investigations. The payload integrates a lunar laser retroreflector, a Very Long Baseline Interferometry transmitter, a receiver for navigation signals compatible with LunaNet standards, high-stability atomic clocks, and direct-to-Earth radio links -- making it the first lunar station to co-locate multiple ranging, tracking, and timing techniques. NovaMoon will enable sub-metre to decimetre positioning, provide local differential corrections for lunar users, and ensure an accurate and stable realisation of position and time. Preliminary simulation studies show that this multi-technique dataset improves the lunar reference frame, orientation and ephemerides, and estimates of interior parameters like tidal response and core properties. NovaMoon will also provide the first long-duration physical realisation of a lunar time reference. Beyond its primary goals, it supports improved cartography, precise surface geolocation, and higher-resolution topography, contributing to safer landings and operations. It also enables new tests of fundamental physics, including constraints on relativity and possible deviations from classical gravity.

Abundance and size-frequency distributions of boulders in Linne crater's ejecta (Moon)

This paper presents the abundances and the size-frequency distributions (SFD) of the ejected boulders surrounding the Linne crater, located on the Moon's Mare Serenitatis basin. By means of Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera high-resolution images we prepare a context geological map of the Linne crater as well as we identify 12000 boulders > 4.4 m, with a maximum measured size of 30.8 m. The cumulative number of boulders per km2 is fitted with a power-law curve with index -4.03 +0.09/-0.10. By studying the radial ejecta abundances, we find that the largest ones are located within the first 2 km from the crater's centre, while few tens of boulders with sizes < 8 m are detectable above 5 km from the crater's rim. We find that the Linne proximal ejecta blanket is slightly asymmetrical, as indicated in the geological map too, showing a density increase in the NE-SW direction. This may be the result of an oblique impact emplacement of the original impactor, or it may be explained with a perpendicular impact in the Mare Serenitatis location, but on a surface with lunar basalts with different local mechanical properties. By exploiting our boulders size density as a function of the distance from the crater's centre, we derive a possible regolith thickness at the Linne impact of 4.75 m, supporting similar values based on Earth-based radar and optical data in the Mare Serenitatis basin.

MOD derived pyrochlore films as buffer layer for all-chemical YBCO coated conductors

We report a detailed study performed on La2Zr2O7 (LZO) pyrochlore material grown by Metal-Organic Decomposition (MOD) method as buffer layers for YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) coated conductors. High quality epitaxial LZO thin films have been obtained on single crystal (SC) and Ni-5%at.W substrates. In order to evaluate structural and morphological properties, films have been characterized by means of X-ray diffraction analyses (XRD), atomic force microscope (AFM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Precursors solutions and heat treatments have been studied by thermogravimetric analyses (TG-DTA-DTG) and infrared spectra (FT-IR) with the aim of optimizing the annealing process. Thin films of YBCO have been deposited by pulsed laser ablation (PLD) on this buffer layers. The best results obtained on SC showed YBCO films with critical temperature values above 90 K, high self field critical current density values (Jc > 1 MA/cm2) and high irreversibility field values (8.3 T) at 77 K together with a rather high depinning frequency vp (0.5 T, 77 K)>44 GHz as determined at microwaves. The best results on Ni-5%at.W has been obtained introducing in the heat treatment a pyrolysis process at low temperature in air in order to remove the residual organic part of the precursor solution.
