Geometry of Lax pairs: particle motion and Killing-Yano tensors

A geometric formulation of the Lax pair equation on a curved manifold is studied using phase space formalism. The corresponding (covariantly conserved) Lax tensor is defined and the method of generation of constants of motion from it is discussed. It is shown that when the Hamilton equations of motion are used, the conservation of the Lax tensor translates directly to the well known Lax pair equation, with one matrix identified with components of the Lax tensor and the other matrix constructed from the (metric) connection. A generalization to Clifford objects is also discussed. Nontrivial examples of Lax tensors for geodesic and charged particle motion are found in spacetimes admitting hidden symmetry of Killing--Yano tensors.

Scattering of circularly polarized light by a rotating black hole

We study scattering of polarized light by a rotating (Kerr) black hole of the mass M and the angular momentum J. In order to keep trace of the polarization dependence of photon trajectories one can use the following dimensionless parameter: $\varepsilon=\pm (ωM)^{-1}$, where $ω$ is the photon frequency and the sign + (-) corresponds to the right (left) circular polarization. We assume that $|\varepsilonl << 1$ and use the modified geometric optics approximation developed in [1], that is we include the first order in $\varepsilon$ polarization dependent terms into the eikonal equation. These corrections modify late time behavior of photons. We demonstrate that the photon moves along a null curve, which in the limit $\varepsilon=0$ becomes a null geodesic. We focus on the scattering problem for polarized light. Namely, we consider the following problems: (i) How does the photon bending angle depend on its polarization; (ii) How does position of the image of a point-like source depend on its polarization; (iii) How does the arrival time of photons depend on their polarization. We perform the numerical calculations that illustrate these effects for an extremely rotating black hole and discuss their possible applications.

Classical self-energy and anomaly

We study the problem of self-energy of pointlike charges in higher dimensional static spacetimes. Their energy, as a functional of the spacetime metric, is invariant under a specific continuous transformation of the metric. We show that the procedure of regularization of this formally divergent functional breaks this symmetry and results in an anomalous contribution to the finite renormalized self-energy. We proposed a method of calculation of this anomaly and presented an explicit expressions for it in the case of a scalar charge in four and five-dimensional static spacetimes. This anomalous correction proves to be zero in even dimensions, but it does not vanish in odd-dimensional spacetimes.

Self-energy of a scalar charge near higher-dimensional black holes

We study the problem of self-energy of charges in higher dimensional static spacetimes. Application of regularization methods of quantum field theory to calculation of the classical self-energy of charges leads to model-independent results. The correction to the self-energy of a scalar charge due to the gravitational field of black holes of the higher dimensional Majumdar-Papapetrou spacetime is calculated exactly. It proves to be zero in even dimensions, but it acquires non-zero value in odd dimensional spacetimes. The origin of the self-energy correction in odd dimensions is similar to the origin the conformal anomalies in quantum field theory in even dimensional spacetimes.

Weakly magnetized black holes as particle accelerators

We study collision of particles in the vicinity of a horizon of a weakly magnetized non-rotating black hole. In the presence of the magnetic field innermost stable circular orbits (ISCO) of charged particles can be located close to the horizon. We demonstrate that for a collision of two particles, one of which is charged and revolving at ISCO and the other is neutral and falling from infinity, the maximal collision energy can be high in the limit of strong magnetic field. This effect has some similarity with the recently discussed effect of high center-of-mass energy for collision of particles in extremely rotating black holes. We also demonstrate that for `realistic' astrophysical black holes their ability to play the role of `accelerators' is in fact quite restricted.

Spinoptics in a stationary spacetime

The main goal of the present paper is to study how polarization of photons affects their motion in a gravitational field created by a rotating massive compact object. We study propagation of the circularly polarized beams of light in a stationary gravitational field. We use (3+1)-form of the Maxwell equations to derive a master equation for the propagation of monochromatic electromagnetic waves of the frequency $ω$ with a given helicity. We first analize its solutions in the high frequency approximation using the `standard' geometrical optics approach. After that we demonstrate how this `standard' approach can be modified in order to include the effect of the helicity of photons on their motion. Such an improved method reproduces the standard results of the geometrical optics at short distances. However, it modifies the asymptotic behavior of the circularly polarized beams in the late-time regime. We demonstrate that the corresponding equations for the circularly polarized beam can be effectively obtained by modification of the background geometry by including a small factor proportional to $ω^{-1}$ whose sign corresponds to photon helicity. We obtain the modified equations for circularly polarized rays by using such a `renormalization' procedure, and calculate the corresponding renormalization term for the Kerr geometry.

Brane Holes

The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that in models with large extra dimensions under special conditions one can extract information from the interior of 4D black holes. For this purpose we study an induced geometry on a test brane in the background of a higher dimensional static black string or a black brane. We show that at the intersection surface of the test brane and the bulk black string/brane the induced metric has an event horizon, so that the test brane contains a black hole. We call it a brane hole. When the test brane moves with a constant velocity V with respect to the bulk black object it also has a brane hole, but its gravitational radius r_e is greater than the size of the bulk black string/brane r_0 by the factor (1-V^2)^{-1}. We show that bulk `photon' emitted in the region between r_0 and r_e can meet the test brane again at a point outside r_e. From the point of view of observers on the test brane the events of emission and capture of the bulk `photon' are connected by a spacelike curve in the induced geometry. This shows an example in which extra dimensions can be used to extract information from the interior of a lower dimensional black object. Instead of the bulk black string/brane, one can also consider a bulk geometry without horizon. We show that nevertheless the induced geometry on the moving test brane can include a brane hole. In such a case the extra dimensions can be used to extract information from the complete region of the brane hole interior. We discuss thermodynamic properties of brane holes and interesting questions which arise when such an extra dimensional channel for the information mining exists.

Particle Dynamics in Weakly Charged Extreme Kerr Throat

We study dynamics of a test charged particle moving in a weakly charged extreme Kerr throat. Dynamical equations of the particle motion are solved in quadratures. We show explicitly that the Killing tensor of the Kerr spacetime becomes reducible in the extreme Kerr throat geometry. Special types of motion of particles and light are discussed.

Charged particle in higher dimensional weakly charged rotating black hole spacetime

We study charged particle motion in weakly charged higher dimensional black holes. To describe the electromagnetic field we use a test field approximation and use the higher dimensional Kerr-NUT-(A)dS metric as a background geometry. It is shown that for a special configuration of the electromagnetic field the equations of motion of charged particles are completely integrable. The vector potential of such a field is proportional to one of the Killing vectors (called primary Killing vector) from the `Killing tower' of symmetry generating objects which exists in the background geometry. A free constant in the definition of the adopted electromagnetic potential is proportional to the electric charge of the higher dimensional black hole. The full set of independent conserved quantities in involution is found. It is demonstrated, that Hamilton-Jacobi equations are separable, as well as the corresponding Klein-Gordon equation and its symmetry operators.

Motion of charged particles near weakly magnetized Schwarzschild black hole

We study motion of a charged particle in the vicinity of a weakly magnetized Schwarzschild black hole and focus on its bounded trajectories lying in the black hole equatorial plane. If the Lorentz force, acting on the particle, is directed outward from the black hole, there exist two qualitatively different types of trajectories, one is a curly motion and another one is a trajectory without curls. We calculated the critical value of the magnetic field for the transition between these two types. If the magnetic field is greater than the critical one, for fixed values of the particle energy and angular momentum, the bounded trajectory has curls. The curls appear as a result of the gravitational drift. The greater the value of the magnetic field, the larger is the number of curls. We constructed an approximate analytical solution for a bounded trajectory and found the gravitational drift velocity of its guiding center.

Black Holes in Higher Dimensional Gravity Theory with Quadratic in Curvature Corrections

Static spherically symmetric black holes are discussed in the framework of higher dimensional gravity with quadratic in curvature terms. Such terms naturally arise as a result of quantum corrections induced by quantum fields propagating in the gravitational background. We focus our attention on the correction of the form ${\cal C}^2=C_{αβγδ} C^{αβγδ}$. The Gauss-Bonnet equation in four-dimensional (4D) spacetime enables one to reduce this term in the action to the terms quadratic in the Ricci tensor and scalar curvature. As a result the Schwarzschild solution which is Ricci flat will be also a solution of the theory with the Weyl scalar ${\cal C}^2$ correction. An important new feature of the spaces with dimension $D > 4$ is that in the presence of the Weyl curvature-squared term a solution necessary differs from the corresponding `classical' vacuum Tangherlini metric. This difference is related to the presence of {\em secondary} or {\em induced} hair. We explore how the Tangherlini solution is modified by `quantum corrections', assuming that the gravitational radius $r_0$ is much larger than the scale of the quantum corrections. We also demonstrated that finding a general solution beyond the perturbation method can be reduced to solving a single third order ODE (master equation).

Interior of a Charged Distorted Black Hole

We study interior of a charged, non-rotating distorted black hole. We consider static and axisymmetric black holes, and focus on a special case when an electrically charged distorted solution is obtained by the Harrison-Ernst transformation from an uncharged one. We demonstrate that the Cauchy horizon of such black hole remains regular, provided the distortion is regular at the event horizon. The shape and the inner geometry of both the outer and inner (Cauchy) horizons are studied. We demonstrate that there exists a duality between the properties of the horizons. Proper time of a free fall of a test particle moving in the interior of the distorted black hole along the symmetry axis is calculated. We also study the property of the curvature in the inner domain between the horizons. Simple relations between the 4D curvature invariants and the Gaussian curvature of the outer and inner horizon surfaces are found.

Gregory-Laflamme instability of 5D electrically charged black strings

We study the Gregory-Laflamme instability of 5D compactified, electrically charged black strings. We consider static, linear perturbations of these solutions and derive master equation for these perturbations. Using numerical analysis we search for the threshold unstable modes and derive the critical wave-length. The results are illustrated in the black string mass v.s. electric charge phase diagram. Similar diagram is constructed using global thermodynamic equilibrium argument applied to the charged string and 5D electrically charged black hole. The results derived illustrate that electric charge makes the black string less stable.

Hidden Symmetries and Black Holes

The paper contains a brief review of recent results on hidden symmetries in higher dimensional black hole spacetimes. We show how the existence of a principal CKY tensor (that is a closed conformal Killing-Yano 2-form) allows one to generate a `tower' of Killing-Yano and Killing tensors responsible for hidden symmetries. These symmetries imply complete integrability of geodesic equations and the complete separation of variables in the Hamilton-Jacobi, Klein-Gordon, Dirac and gravitational perturbation equations in the general Kerr-NUT-(A)dS metrics. Equations of the parallel transport of frames along geodesics in these spacetimes are also integrable.

A Toy Model for Topology Change Transitions: Role of Curvature Corrections

We consider properties of near-critical solutions describing a test static axisymmetric D-dimensional brane interacting with a bulk N-dimensional black hole (N>D). We focus our attention on the effects connected with curvature corrections to the brane action. Namely, we demonstrate that the second order phase transition in such a system is modified and becomes first order. We discuss possible consequences of these results for merger transitions between caged black holes and black strings.

Parallel-propagated frame along null geodesics in higher-dimensional black hole spacetimes

In [arXiv:0803.3259] the equations describing the parallel transport of orthonormal frames along timelike (spacelike) geodesics in a spacetime admitting a non-degenerate principal conformal Killing-Yano 2-form h were solved. The construction employed is based on studying the Darboux subspaces of the 2-form F obtained as a projection of h along the geodesic trajectory. In this paper we demonstrate that, although slightly modified, a similar construction is possible also in the case of null geodesics. In particular, we explicitly construct the parallel-transported frames along null geodesics in D=4,5,6 Kerr-NUT-(A)dS spacetimes. We further discuss the parallel transport along principal null directions in these spacetimes. Such directions coincide with the eigenvectors of the principal conformal Killing-Yano tensor. Finally, we show how to obtain a parallel-transported frame along null geodesics in the background of the 4D Plebanski-Demianski metric which admits only a conformal generalization of the Killing-Yano tensor.

Ray-tracing in four and higher dimensional black holes: An analytical approximation

We study null rays propagation in a spacetime of static Schwarzschild--Tangherlini black holes in arbitrary number of dimensions. We focus on the bending angle and the retarded time delay for rays emitted in the vicinity of a black hole and propagating to the infinity. We obtain an analytic expression in terms of elementary functions which approximate the bending angle and time delay in these spacetimes with high accuracy. We analyze the relative error of the developed analytic approximations and show that it is quite small in the complete domain of the parameter space for the rays reaching the infinity and for different number of the spacetime dimensions. Possible applications of the obtained results are briefly discussed.

Hidden Symmetries of Higher Dimensional Black Holes and Uniqueness of the Kerr-NUT-(A)dS spacetime

We prove that the most general solution of the Einstein equations with the cosmological constant which admits a principal conformal Killing-Yano tensor is the Kerr-NUT-(A)dS metric. Even when the Einstein equations are not imposed, any spacetime admitting such hidden symmetry can be written in a canonical form which guarantees the following properties: it is of the Petrov type D, it allows the separation of variables for the Hamilton-Jacobi, Klein-Gordon, and Dirac equations, the geodesic motion in such a spacetime is completely integrable. These results naturally generalize the results obtained earlier in four dimensions.
